UAC Ultra is the last one i played that really impressed me, even if the next to last level was a letdown (just a shitty slaughter level)
Impressive architecture, custom textures and even a new enemy type. Hellbound is good too, it's kind of slaughter-wady but it has it's slow moments in between
He's a screencap I took of hellbound. Very moody wad, incredible architecture with lots of enemies to kill. Gets pretty hard halfway through though, so prepare your anus. It might work well with Project MSX or Demonsteele

Scythe 1. Everything leading up to Fire and Ice was great and the final level was a worthy challenge. Plus the music that went along with it was awesome, almost as if it was hell's last stand against you.
Also if full on overhaul mods areyour thing, REELism is still my favorite doom mod of all time.
Basically a crazy smash-tv style arena game with content from basically every doom-era shooter and lots of custom content too! Lots of bosses to fight, basically infnite replayability.

Honestly? For pure blood and guts glory, I say Brutal doom. Nothing makes me feel more like what I thought doom looked like to me as a child than brutal doom. It's great to pop on and do a quick ep.1 runthrough every so often. It really doesn't get old.
I'm sure (in fact I know) that there are better wads out there in terms of quality and scope, but for what Brutal doom tried to do, I think it succeeded beautifully.
Make sure to load it with Demonsteele for extra fun!
Hellbound has some of the coolest looking levels I saw.
Speaking of which, Sunder had some fantastic architecture... I just wish I was good enough I could play it without OP weapon mods. It's an actual slaughterwad that doesn't fuck around.
Well Term uses Scythe 2 to test it. Hellbound would probably work well with it on some of the more open maps. I don't actually play Demonsteele all that much so I can't reccommend any good wads for it

I know they're frowned upon mostly, but I got a lot of enjoyment out of scalliano's 667 Shuffle. Aeons of Death was also fun for a while
As for levels, I enjoyed Hell Revealed, and one particular .wad that I can't remember the name off, but it was only a few levels, but had crazy end boss fights against the Cyberdemon, Spider Mastermind, and a monster from another Doom clone

Pretty much this. Many wads out there exceed the original games levels. In fact some are so well done that it makes you wonder how so many modern "professional" video game designers are so awful at level creation.
that's because Doom wads are made for fans by fans so they know what people want to see, what they want to play and what pisses them off they also don't have any time limit so there is no real need to relase a half assed corridor map in another shit tacticool 7/10 fps game no one will remember week after relase

GZDoom has software mode and a pretty damn good emulation of software lighting as a mode in the OpenGL mode
I say it's worth it just for 60+fps support alone, and I played doom when it came out in 1993
Jumping only fucks over a handful of maps, and it's easy enough to just know not to jump, and there's literally nothing wrong with mouselook (that is off by default even, if I recall)

You get used to dealing with arch-viles if they're not used in a retarded fashion by the map maker, but pain elementals shitting out a billion lost souls if you ignore them and blocking your shots by shitting out lost souls when you do move in to kill them is annoying as fuck.
I just glanced over doom and went straight to quake back then since I was never much of a shooter guy
when I did try doom I was weirded out by the auto vertical aim and the fact that doom guy can technically shoot bullets out the top of his head. I guess it's just a matter of what you're being exposed to first
I started without vertical aim, but didn't even use the mouse until Quake was out and freelook had been implemented in source ports. Up until getting Doom Legacy from a PC Gamer coverdisk I'd been using the directional keys, strafelock and ctrl/space.

Revanants. Homing rockets are fucking bull shit. They're easy enough 1 on 1, but in a big fire fight I dont fucking want to preform evasive maneuvers around a homing rocket while trying to dodge everything else and keep my aim

Except for the overwhelming balance issues that interrupt the flow of the actual game itself, and the glaring incompatibility issues with everything else.
I normally dont mind over the top shit, but brutal doom just feels overly clunky in comparison because it tries to add so much excessive features to the point to where it's just a mega clusterfuck of unneeded features, the guns get fucked in one way or another and the shit that was shoehorned in just rubs off as annoying.
Its okay to dick around in vanilla maps with but as soon as you try some actual map wads, everything goes to absolute shit.
I've been playing Complex Doom recently. Pretty fun and pretty challenging. There's a monster that has a BFG9000 that's pretty much an instant kill.

I think its "proto scythe" if that makes sense. Its good, but scythe improved on it in every way while still focusing on the same type of level design. Also, the Alien Vendetta levels are really ugly
