It's clear that Vanille and Fang share a "special" relationship without reading any novella.

Yeah, basically when it was first released in Japan a prequel web novella also come out at the same time. So basically in order to put some perspective on how some of these characters developed, you pretty much have to read it. And you had to read it in chunks because all of the Fang and Vanille chapters are massive spoilers.

Reading it made me like most of the characters a little more than those who had no idea that the novella even existed. And I feel that all of it contains stuff that should have been in the game.

Sazh is really one of the most reasonable people, while Snow has a hero complex, Lightning is a murderous psychopath, Hope was a psychopath-in-training, and Fang and Vanille don't count because they're already "in" the loop so to speak.
