Idk.

I honestly don't remember MGR's plot other than that Armstrong wanted to make a world where... it was survival of the fittest or something? It was really dumb but fun.

MGSV had, imo, a good plot with a good villain plan, but it was just delivered in a terrible way. I am a linguistics major though so the idea of a language based weapon gave me a hard on.

I agree with OP, than again I'm a huge weeaboo who has a major hard on for Raiden with his katana and samurai moves so there is a lot of bias there.

MGR had amazing music though and the boss fights got me pumped, also combat was fast paced and entertaining.

That one day, every person in this nation will control their own destiny! A land of the truly free dammit! A nation of action not words -- ruled by strength not committee! Where the law changes to suit the individual, not the other way around! Where power and justice are in back where they belong, in the hands of the people! Where every man is free -- to think --to act -- For himself! Fuck all these limp-dick lawyers, and these chicken shit bureaucrats! Fuck this 24/7 internet spew of trivia and celebrity bullshit! Fuck American Pride -- fuck the media -- Fuck - all of it! America is diseased -- rotten to the core...there's no saving it... We need to pull it out by the roots! Wipe the slate clean -- burn it down! And from the ashes a new America will be born! Evolved but untaimed! The weak will be purged -- and the strongest will thrive -- free to live as they see fit! They'll make America great again!

MGR is the definition of meme game.
>>
The plot was simple. They destroyed the main character's eye and disfigured him, so after receiving cybernetic implants, he chases through warzones seeking his revenge, becoming lost in a blind rage. Eventually he realizes that his path is not to lose himself to the sense of revenge, and continues with a sense of duty instead. After some poorly explained villain motivations, he fights a mech and brutally kills the man who was operating it.

Wait, which game am I talking about?

To be fair, Rising is not all that bad when it comes to plot. It's basically a subversion of the story of MGS2, where Raiden and the player are treated as the same identity (see when you input your dogtag), but Raiden ends up abandoning it in the end, thinking it was not worth and fighting against his nature.
The whole dogtag scene at the end of the game makes this happen - Raiden, he was himself and not just a puppet to his natural instict (A.K.A) the player.

In Rising, Raiden's mind is a tad warped, he's always being rounded by his instincts, and enemies that attack directly at them (see first Sam's fight) and all the justice mumbo jumbo. In a certain form, it's also jabbing directly at the player - You are there to be Raiden, a legendary soldier who fights for peace and justice, are you not? Not really, you enjoy the killing, you are playing for that after all, the whole justice thing just gives context for you (the player) to do such actions. In the fight with Monsoon, the player and Raiden are reconnected, both now sharing the same desire, to defeat more enemies.

Overall, I found it pretty interesting.
>>
>>323890943
He's still somewhat in MGS2

but yea its obvious as fuck Kojima wanted to ressurect him but didnt have the balls to commit wholesale

>>323890943

Rising is actually the best written game in the franchise after MGS1. Rising's biggest flaw is kinda relying to heavily on the player knowing Raiden's history, especially during around MGS4, which was shit and exclusive to PS3.
>>
>>323886892

Yeah seriously. MGR is a damn good game. I mean there are issues with the combat that ultimately bring it down, but its narrative is a strong point indeed.

>>
>>323890982
He was vetoed by his staff.
Liquid actually is possessing ocelot during mgs2, he replaced his arm with an artificial one between mgs2 and mgs4 and installed an artificial liquid personality onto his own to lure solid snake into uploading the virus.
Just like venom snake had an artificial arm and had big boss's personality
It's like pottery, it rhymes
>>
>>323890882
actually, it's an evil twin that was cloned from the world's greatest soldier, and who's been designated the code name liquid snake, while the main character is called solid snake, ain't metal gear wacky?

But go on believing the writing used to be amazing and fukushima leaving was what made it bad

3's story is kinda shit honestly. Its nowhere near as good as MGS1 and 2.

Literally the ONLY thing I really liked about MGS3s story was The Boss. Im a sucker for student/teacher shenanigans.
>>
>>323890356
Sometimes I think kojima make shit up and didn't even think stuff through and just let up connect the dots for him.
>>
>>323891235
How the hell are they not in 3? Sure, a lot of the cobra unit members don't get any screentime, but the exact same could be said about MGR's desperado.
>>
>>323891190

Characterized bosses.

>>323891483

That's not true at all. Neither The Pain, The Fear, nor The Fury get as much characterization as Mistral, Sam, Monsoon, Bladewolf, or Sundowner.
>>
>>323889795
Except those were written good thanks to Fukushima, all games that were written only by him without Kojima have a lot better scores than those co-written with Kojima.
>>
>>323891382
I'm not defending kojima (since most of that stuff was probably thought up by the scenario writers) but the games actually connect to each other very well if you listen to most codec conversations / tapes and if you ignore portable ops. The only part that really doesen't fit is liquid saying that big boss was cloned in his late 50s in mgs2 when he was actually 37, so you have to explain it to yourself by saying that liquid was misinformed.
Everything else is actually explained one way or another, even minor things like doctor clark being referred to as a male in mgs1.
The real problem is that most people look up stuff on the wiki, which takes stuff like fanbooks, novels and manuals as canon and some times makes shit up entirely, so people read that Miller has a daughter or shit like that and they are obviously confused. If you only look at what's in the games and nothing else it all fits pretty well.
>>
>>323891593

>That's not true at all. Neither The Pain, The Fear, nor The Fury get as much characterization as Mistral, Sam, Monsoon, Bladewolf, or Sundowner.

Thiiiissssss. You get a few lines of dialog about their backstory, and thats literally fucking it. They just appear, you fight them, they die, and you move on.

They dont do fucking ANYTHING in the story, while in every other MGS game the boss characters are involved in all kinds of shit building hype to when you actually get to fight them.
>>
What exactly does everyone hate about MGSV's plot?

>>323891379
MGS1 had a great story but 2's was fucking weird
3 would've been better if some of the Cobra Unit had been dropped, nothing kills tension like an invisible man jump on the tree tops with a crossbow or a man shooting bees at you
>>
>>323891373
>Volgin was kinda bland
Sure, but he wasn't the main focus. Boss/Snake is
>Naked Snake is autistic as fuck
A character having a hard time expressing how they feel when they're in a shitty, timed, overwhelming situation is fine
>Boss doesn't make sense
Go on.
>acting as if MGR doesn't have stupid boss quirks
Either way, having more characterized bosses doesn't make it more well written game.

>>323891593
>Mistral, characterization
Delusional.
>>
>>323891483
But unlike the Cobra, the Desperado do it intentionaly, they are not there for speeches or deepening the lore, in the end of the day, they are all just battle-seeking hedonists, all enjoy killing and are there for that.
Mistral was pretty much a psychopath that left her home for more war. Monsoon knew that human nature was ugly and embraced it. Sundowner... well, Sundowner is Sundowner. And Sam? He's not there to talk, he's there for a battle and that's all, even with his theme saying that it's the only thing he really knows.

"Forget it. We've both heard enough speeches about higher causes by now. History will decide who's right."
>>
>>323891734
>those were written good

thanks for playing
>>
>>323891483
The only desperado with a lack of screentime is Khamsin.
>>
>>323886892
Both as shit as each other fammo
>>
>>323891842
Monsoon and Mistral.
>>
>>323891775
>Delusional.

Yes. Mistral has more characterization than The Pain, The Fear, or The Fury. She lost her whole village in a civil war and learned to enjoy all the killing much like Raiden.
>>
>>323891906
Both got more screentime in the DLC stories. Mistral in particular has that relationship with that Russian guy that went over my head and got lost when I was enjoying the action.
>>
>>323891782

I'm not about to jump in this MGS3 v MGR fight, but this is part of why MGR is so good.

>"Forget it. We've both heard enough speeches about higher causes by now. History will decide who's right."

I mean damn, Sam KNOWS what the fuck is up. Whether Armstrong is wrong, or Raiden is right, STRENGTH is what rules the battlefield. MGR is the perfect companion to MGS2 I mean fuck. Raiden opts to fight for good hoping he can protect the weak, but then Bladewolf brings him back to reality. "Such numbers are in the billions. [of those weaker than you]" Raiden knows it, that it's a false ideal, but he goes on because he feels for the children. He finds that he and Armstrong share similar ideals in the end. That men fight for causes they do not believe in. So Armstrong passes his meme onto Raiden, and what will he do?

I would absolutely LOVE to see a sequel to MGR, simply because it would have Raiden start down the path of Big Boss and villainy. They could also work out the combat kinks while they're at it.
>>
>Platinum actually writes a decent fucking story
how the fuck was this possible
>>
>>323892417
>Raiden start down the path of Big Boss
This is the only chance the series has left for natural progression of the story and characters.
>>
>>323892510
