It's not an MMO. PvE is instanced and you either play solo or with a group through matchmaking. It's just an online shooter with open-world elements but everything is still instanced; I wasn't in the alpha so I don't know how big an instance is.
PvP however is basically PvE with PvP features on it; this is where you'll see other players out in the open in areas called the Dark Zone where you can either group up with or hunt other player while having to deal with NPCs in the open. In addition, recent rumors suggest only 24 players per Dark Zone instance.

From the newest Trailer it heavily looks like Destiny in 3rd person + PvP.

Don't know what to feel, i dropped Destiny after 2-3 hours because it really bored me and forced me to go back to the same zones/interiors all the time.

Looks boring as shit.
