Watching Speed runs for a few years now and it feels like I've basically seen it all by now.

The entire fucking idea of a speedrunning charity marathon is that people tune in to watch speedrunners because it's entertaining and then are encouraged to donate to charity. Key word being entertaining. So theoretically, the more entertaining the marathon is, the more people will watch, and thus the more people will donate. So they should be trying to keep the marathon entertaining, not hosting it in a massive room that sounds like a morgue with the runners and audience discouraged from doing anything entertaining. It feels robotic and sterile, therefore why should anyone keep watching. I can just make a direct donation to PCF or MSF if I want.

This is especially the case for big-name games where the speedruns are boring shit and are only on because they're well-known games. Like who seriously gives a shit about 5 hours of RNG manipulation.

The people at the event are fun and this year a lot of good runners came out and showed off many cool tricks. The Reverse Boss runs were nifty, there were a couple dud runs obviously but who cares? (seriously though that bloodborne run was fuckin shit)

overall no drama, no meme runners like Cosmo, Stiv, Caveman or Chibi.

the donations are filtered too often into just the generic crap, i think it should just be a ticker onscreen and nothing else, unless the donation is a direct shoutout to the runner.

I went to SDGQ In 2014 or so. Now, I was almost completely unaware of the speedrunning scene. I've seen a few youtube videos, spent an hour or two total on twitch, and play a lot of video games. So I thought, why not stop by? I've never been to a video game event before and maybe there would be some cool people who I could talk about video games with or play some 3ds or something.

Literally everyone would either only talk about what video game they were playing, and everyone there was in some sort of twitch clique or some shit and wouldn't separate from their hoard and become really uncomfortable talking to anyone else. They literally communicated with twitch memes or with technological speedrunning garble, none of which I understood because I rarely frequent video game forums or imageboards. I only held a single conversation with only a handful of people, and it was minimal at best. I couldn't understand entire sentences coming out of people's mouths because it was ALL FUCKING MEMES. The most autistic shit I have ever experienced in my life. You could feel it fucking permeating through the air. It was also one of the most surreal experiences of my life, it was like... Everyone was speaking english but with words I absolutely did not understand. I left after about two hours. The entry was the worst use of money in my entire life.

The earlier years, they were joking, having a good time, laughing about and no one stuck a rod up anyones ass for being politically incorrect.


Now, there's no plushies, couch is invite only, the area is dimmly lit and the runners smile less and show less emotion in fear of being punished.

no it's not cherrypicking, because numerous runners have complained about the state that GDQs are becoming. SGDQ was suppose to be the comfy low profile GDQ and now it's as big or even bigger than AGDQ.

That's why things like NASA and alternatives are being made, so that people can discover what made the events fun in the first place.

So why did they ban the Touhou plushies? I never found out why they did that.
