This is only the case in sonic 1 and ironically some of the more recent and overall bad 2D sonic games

more or less every sonic level in 2/3 has large parts where you just hold right (or nothing at all) and get boosted like chemical plant, ice cap and flying battery inbetween parts where you have to stop and jump between some platforms or something before another hold right segment

the ones that seriously deviate from this are also the ones that tend to annoy the shit out of people like stage 3 in sonic 2 and sand zone in sonic 3

Except there's still forced momentum breakers at high skill levels and the game expects and forces you to know the levels's layout ahead of time and to have already beaten it to be able to go fast.

The adventure games still have a skillgap, without nearly as much forced momentum breakers, and actually allow you to react to shit without having to know it's there ahead of time since it's 3d and you are looking ahead.
