There are these magical things called Materia that exist in this universe that can enhance ones abilities and even summon beasts from other dimensions. Barret basically has unlimited bullets at all times(you never buy ammo for him). Cid is a Dragoon and uses materia like everyone else in the game world. He also can call the highwind to help him in battles.

Also, never skipped leg day and can call in an airstrike.
