The anon who posted it has made it a meme, but really is an exception to almost every other Metroid game in terms of intractability; SM was the last of the 2D Metroids i originally played, and i got stuck on the tube also.

Generally back in those days it was common to be experimental and try newly found items on suspicious looking objects and places.

That said the Sonic one is dumb as hell do to falsely convincing feedback from other things and having to use mechanics that are never applied anywhere else and aren't immediately obvious.

People constantly moan about The Goddamn Tube like it's one of those ludicrously specific Zelda / Simon's Quest things which, while ridiculous, were principally a pain because they were MANDATORY. The Goddamn Tube, while not the most intuitive piece of design, isn't.

You don't ever NEED to break The Goddamn Tube. It's literally just a shortcut between Maridia and Brinstar, and all you miss out on by not breaking it is a single save point. Every item and 99% of Maridia is still accessible.

Furthermore, Maridia is designed to be traversed using the Gravity Suit. You get the Gravity Suit from the Wrecked Ship. Exiting the Wrecked Ship leads you to... Maridia, from another direction, with no breaking of The Goddamn Tube required. This is clearly how the developers expected you to enter Maridia: You grab the Gravity Suit, explore the ship's flooded area because it's literally right there, pop out on the other side of the ship and - hey! - you're in Maridia.

You can also get from Maridia back to Brinstar without breaking The Goddamn Tube, because there's a passage in lower Maridia that ends with you dropping out of the ceiling of a room immediately adjacent to The Goddamn Tube. All breaking The Goddamn Tube does is make this shortcut a two-way thing.

You can literally 100% the game without ever breaking The Goddamn Tube. It's a shortcut / Easter Egg, and not even a particularly useful one, all things considered.

Moaning about it is like moaning about how ducking on the white blocks in Mario 3 isn't intuitive enough. It's a secret bonus thing that the developers threw in because they expected players to fuck around and replay the game over and over trying new shit and trading hints with their friends.

I swear to all that is Holy that there was something you needed to break specifically to get into the frozen part of Maridia where Draygon is. I literally remember being pissed because the game expected me to backtrack and I was sure it was the Tube. Then I looked at the map and saw there was nothing down there besides a savepoint.
