It took me months to finally try and play this game. I was really annoyed at people everywhere claiming it's the best game ever, and posting about UT non stop. I watched the beginning of two LPs on YouTube and I couldn't understand how this game was praised so highly.
I decided to give it a try and bought undertale on the winter sale on steam. And after completing the game, I have to say.. It's deeper than it seems.
It's not GOAT or even GOTY (imho), but it's pretty interesting and fun. I shitposted a lot over this game. I'll stop now. Undertale is actually a good game and I don't think it's a meme game anymore.
>I'll stop now
Don't stop please.
This game needs the shitposting, otherwise no one will prevent tumblr faggots declaring it as the greatest work of art in the history of mankind.
I like the game too.
it's a nice little game but it's both sad and infuriating to see what the fanbase is doing to it
toby would be rolling in his grave if he saw the shit like the humanized characters / lithorosexual picture or whatever
>This game needs the shitposting, otherwise no one will prevent tumblr faggots declaring it as the greatest work of art in the history of mankind.
The first part is true: this game needs the shitposting. The latter is bullshit.
UT needs shitposting to stay alive. It is already being forgotten.
Plus, the buttmad it generates is phenomenal for such a tiny game.
Same process for me too.
I even checked out homestuck to see what that was all about but i think it might be too late to get into it now and theres like 9k pages to go through
Oh, homestuck what a ride. You missed the best parts anon, we crashed newgrounds once. Hussie and toby are pretty close friends, they jokeh e made the game in hussies basement, or that he took hussies throne of being kings of teenagers.
Hussie is not as popular as he was once though( to which he is pretty fucking happy about) , and toby now is living the consequences of that
He also took teenag
I played it 1-2 months after the release after that autist, Yahtzee used multiple episodes of his youtube-series to rant about how good it is. I used to look at the threads thinking "Wow, that looks fucking awful. Meme-game of the month."
Not the best game I have ever played, but certainly one of the feelsiest. The pacifist ending was a bit too sacharine for my tastes, but the overall writing, the music and the contrast with the genocide story really made the characters shine.
Watched Projared play it a bit. I find it hiliarious that he seems to have made it some kind of mission to dislike it as if to prove some kind of point.
Looks like something I'd enjoy.
Daily reminder people would not have grown to hate Undertale if the fanbase hadn't pushed this idea that NO ONE can legitimately dislike the game/find it unfun and that anyone who says they do is simply a contrarian/shitposter.
This alone turned tons of people from "I didn't care for it" to "Fuck this game"
I dislike the game because its gameplay is poor and uninspired and its story is unenjoyable due to how black and white it is. The game no choices outside of "Am I the devil or jesus?" and its message of peace is forced on the player instead of suggested.
The meta shit also gets really grating and annoying. We get it Toby, you can break the 4th wall, it stops being funny the 70th time. But still, my biggest issue was the black and whiteness of the games morals.
the thing that shifted my opinion from bad to cancerous was the music praise
it's literally average, and by average I mean average for 2015, one of the worst years gaming has ever had
it wasn't the gamefaqs poll or the constant spamming or the plagiarism discoveries or even the actual shitty game that made my blood boil, it was the fact that this shitty fucking game was topping RYM and /mu/ had to step in and fix it
undertale, like my little pony, is cancerous: noun
a malignant and invasive growth or tumor, especially one originating in epithelium, tending to recur after excision and to metastasize to other sites.
any disease characterized by such growths.
it's the same retarded type of turbo ultra autistic fanbase in a different medium
It's just a meme game. It's alright if you like it, but you must also understand that people hate on it because meme games attracts autists and autists thus shit up the board.
Toby took the teenager throne from Hussie.
Posting in mobile is truly suferring
I played it right when it came out and I enjoyed it for what it is.
However I fear it will usher in a new era of cancer cash grab feels bullshit. I am already seeing this crap popup on my steam recommended queue.
It's just shitposting.
It's the only thing this board is good for since if you bother to write a heartfelt opinion, insufferable contrarians will just contradict you for no reason.
adding to this, the "/v/ will hate this in two days" tweet he made really shows what kind of faggot he is
he knew fully well /v/ would not approve of this game (because of its furshit content and frequent pre-release thread sagings + bannings) but chose to viral it anyway
he's the type of person that would commit a violent act if it so much as got him mentioned on the news, a desperate attention seeking utter faggot
I want to argue but, damn.
Same process for me except I haven't shitposted about it once and ignored any and all discussion about it.
I even tried really hard not to like it and jokingly called it "tumblrtale" when my friend recommended me to play it.
However, I couldn't not like it despite being most critical while playing. It's just fun, the same kind of fun I had when I watched TTGL, it's not deep, it's not goat, but it's a sweet ride.
He feels personally offended that a game dev would intentionally make a game just to piss off him and his chosen identity.
Textbook paranoia and tribalism. Symptom of getting memed on hard.
>half an hour for 2 dollars is decent
am I reading a fucking coordinated advertisement?
It's actually 8-10 hours long the first time though, and has 3 completely different routes that should all be played from start to finish. So at least 20+ hours of content total, minimum.
The kids are undeveloped mentally at that age and the idea of the 4th wall being broken is still an out there concept to some people.
I mean people that are older or care used to the intake of multiple forms of media aren't as fazed by it and will only be impressed by the truly well done ones, but the general audience that isn't used to seeing it is just impressed in general by it or find it randomly funny
>mod deleting truth about shit tumbr meme game
Game is total shit but the porn is great
>Implying you didn't delete the post yourself
We know how you shitposters work.
This right here, length is indeed a small factor but does the overall experience feel satisfactory and well worth what you payed for the game?
I mean the problem with the money to hour ratio is we get too many sandbox/openworld games with random shit to do all the time that feels more a distraction rather than an actual goal
Yeah. People are stupid and misinterpret shit to push their agendas. Dipshits have been doing that for all sorts of games for years. Your point?
length is almost directly proportional to the quality of a game
this is why GTA, Minecraft, ASSFAGGOTS, and mobile garbage dominate gaming
their replayability gives them length
this is why the Witcher 3 received a majority of GOTY awards
it is a long game
this is why /v/ praises autism fortress
it is an extremely replayable, and therefore, long game
the draw of an actual game is gameplay, more gameplay cannot hurt the gameplay alone that exists, therefore at its gameplay core a long game is vastly superior
this is not an absolute fact, but it is a clear standard, and deviations (such as bastion and portal) are far and few in between
This is like saying MGS pushes the gay agenda because of all the gay fanart. If Toby himself were posting this shit you would have a leg to stand on, but cmon.
This is a tripfag-tier horrible, oversimplified opinion.
You completely neglect something that's at least as important as gameplay, and that's level design, or encounter/event design in some games.
No matter how good the gameplay is, stretching the game out means the moment-to-moment design becomes much weaker, usually just a repetition of a limited number of templates
I disagree. If a game has great gameplay then length is less and less important, and the game is arguably more fun and rewarding. Metal Gear Rising is a good example. People make jokes about how short it is, and it is, but the game is fun. Fun enough for me to pour +40 hours into it to find collectibles and beat it on various difficulties. Borderlands 2 is a game with a lot in it, but I hardly played it because I got bored by the time I got to the hub city. Quantity means nothing if there's no quality.
I feel like the only one who actually likes Undertale.
I tried Undertale and just found it painfully derivative.
Almost every single aspect to it had been done better, to one degree or another, by a different game.
At every turn I was left with a feeling of "this is ok, but [X game] did [Y thing] better".
I would actually consider MGR on the long side since I got it for 7 bucks and so far have 43 hours in it
I find platinum's stuff pretty replayable so I got a little more value out of it than most might
I agree with this but I still don't think what I said is wrong, maybe I worded it too strongly
all of the elements that make up a short game have a much tougher time competing with the elements that make up a longer game
using bastion again, basically all aspects of it had to be perfect for me to consider it good, however on the reverse we have monster hunter
as far as monster hunter goes, while it's something I like, I can pick a hell of a lot of it apart for being shitty, but its length and replay value redeem these flaws and make the experience enjoyable and worth the money I spent
I have no idea what you mean.
Games don't have to be completely original to be good, but I feel Undertale's combat system is genuinely unique, although it's very simple. It gets even better when it starts becoming more complex and genre mixing towards the end. It's also used very effectively to present story elements, and I always appreciate storytelling through gameplay
Bullet hell is not unique, but using it as a JRPG battle system is.
I think it's a great choice to bring more action and reflex based gameplay into the genre in an intuitive way.
There are more mechanics than bullet hell too down the road. If you didn't see them, you didn't play very far
to expand on your point, I think it's pretty rare to have a bullet hell where the patterns actually mean something
Like, they say something about the character and almost tell a story in and of itself. Pretty neat bridging of story and gameplay.
you can't even admit it's truly unique
you've done so little fucking research that you're afraid I'll pull out some different indie trash that does the exact combo you've specified
Not liking the writing style and humor is a completely valid reason to not like Undertale. The narrative is a huge part of an RPG, no matter what the gameplay is.
Being triggered by gay characters is SJW-tier though
reminder that this is a viral
Is Doom a deritative shit game because it has pretty much the exact same mechanics as Wolfenstein 3D?
You can argue about uniqueness all you want, but it's not a good point in the first place
The review LITERALLY SAYS he feels weird for criticizing it at all since the reason he dislikes it is the reason others like it. Basically "it was a good game that I can't legitimately criticize but that I didn't like."
Don't be paranoid.
Of the bullet hells I've played, items are common and that's it. They're about levels and getting through them. Story is done without you're input, mid level or at the start/end. You don't interact in any way other than shooting, and Undertale is the only one I can think of that uses random battles.
Derivative != bad, but derivative = not original, and a lot of people praising Undertale were very specifically saying it was highly original which is wasn't regardless of whether it was good or not.
That's the point.
You're going out of your way to be a shitter, and the game loses its charm when you just try to be a murder machine.
Anyone can legitimately criticize something they experienced. He is retarded for claiming that and you are even more retarded for running with it. He didn't like the characters, Half the game. He didn't like the Humor, a quarter of the game. If every person who reviewed a game came out and said, HUR DUR I DIDN'T LIKE THE GAME SO I CAN'T GIVE A REAL REVIEW, we wouldn't have a need for reviewers.
I'm the one who defended the gay characters, but I'm fine with people saying something is gay = bad.
I hate neutering language in any way, you don't have to treat people with silk gloves
You can easily finish it in time for the end in April. It starts slow but starts to pick up and then it's really good for a while, and by the time you get to the trolls you're too deep in to not just finish it.
I just finished True Pacifist. It was a charming little game. I'm glad I played it. But really, once you finish it, it's time to move on. Flowey even tells you this himself.
>Just let them go
I always felt like Genocide is just a really important part of the game. It's the antithesis of everything in the game, and it's very revealing.
IMO, everyone who liked the normal routes should use the true name and play up to the genocide final boss at least.
It does give you more insight into the world and and really points out what a prick you are. The whole
selling your soul to bring the world back so Chara can destroy everyone even in a pacifist runthing is real fucked up, but I guess they wanted to give you a real punishment for being a dick.
So if I did true pacifist, and now I go for genocide, will it have consequences on pacifist later on?
if you want to bring the game back after genocide, chara will kill everyone after the ending and this is irreversible.. right?
Basically, you have to
sell your soul to the demon you awaken in genocide to get the world back. Once you do, the demon, Chara will own you and bring this up from time to time. In a post-genocide pacifist ending, you set everyone free and all seems good, then Chara takes control of your body since he owns your soul and ruins everything.
You can never get a true good ending again unless you alter the game files.
Anyone else feel like they have a better appreciation for the game then the people who obsess over it.
I mean I played it and I had fun. I liked all the characters and the endings were good enough to keep my thinking about them for a while but sheesh. I don't get the obsessive parts of any fanbase really.
Being around for the exact day it released really gives one perspective on the how quickly /v/ can get hostile at something.
Tons of people here playing this game day 1, praising it, legitimately being caught by a surprising experience that actually made people feel actual feelings. Also, nobody was super hyped going into it.
Then other places started liking it. Particularly tumblr.
Now the game's very existence triggers /v/ due to the hype surrounding it and tumblr also liking it.
It's like the Hitler argument. You don't need to hate something because somebody you hate likes it. And vice versa, don't need to like something because somebody you hate hates it.
I wonder how people here will view Undertale in 5 years time. We now have people reminiscing about and fondly recalling Oblivion when it was initially considered a cancerous entry to the Elder Scrolls series and its death knell. I wonder how bad the next Elder Scrolls game will be to make us mildly positive towards Skyrim.
I was around the first days too
I had been looking forward to the game for years after the kickstarter got funded
It was a damn shame watching /v/ get mad over something just because other places liked it
The threads we had were great
I'd guess that most of the hate around this game will die down once the game isn't that popular anymore and people reading this sub don't get exposed to any stupid tumblr fanstuff anymore. Once all the fanbase cancer dies down, people sure aren't remembering it for years down the line.
You know what? Fuck you, it's not. Youtuber bait is shit like I Am Bread, Goat Simulator, FNAF; stuff that's absurd and gets easy views. Undertale is a game you're actually supposed to play yourself.
What the fuck? Are you speedrunning the damn thing? the speedrun for best ending is 2 hours. The game takes at least 5 hours on pacifist, assuming you don't have trouble with any bosses. Plus if you do Geno run, there's no way you're gonna blast through that, it took me a couple hours to fight
>lying to look cool on 4chan
tell me how you godlike video game knowledge allows you to beat speedrun records on your first playthrough.
Undyne is a really good character.
Severely underrated compared to the skellingtons and gotes.
Everything Undertale does was done better a year earlier by Lisa. They're practically the same game, but Undertale is worse in every way.
And yet I've never seen Lisa mentioned outside of /v/. It certainly wasn't winning dozens of GOTY awards from mainstream media outlets. Why is this?
lisa was a pretty great game but comparing it to undertale doesn't really work.
the only thin they have in common is that they both took inspiration from mother.
undertale gets talked about more because most people outside /v/ are a little put off by a game about a violent desert full of half naked rapists.
Only normalfags like Undertale, sadly nowadays is full of them
Prove me wrong
The next area has much less obnoxious main NPCs, and is generally the best part of the game.
The last area has one very prominent, very annoying NPC, but then it gets really good
how is it good. it's linear as fuck, leeches on Earthbound every chance it gets, "MUH GAME READIN" dialogue changes don't mean shit. it's all controlled by a single file that's literally as simple as
hasshittaste = 1
