Tactics Ogre is just about identical to FFT. Try the Super Robot Wars games or something, they're a bit more like Fire Emblem.

I loved Dragon Quest and they are the only JRPG I've played.

My main problem with the plot: Yuna.

I don't mind Yuna and I like her alot (more in X-2) but screw Square for making you believe it was actually possible for Tidus to get with Rikku/Lulu. That is not possible at all because Yuna's love for Tidus is deeply woven into the plot any attempt to deviate from the story will result in just dumb fanservice scenes depending on affection values. Either let my character romance my own choice or just don't give me the illusion of choice at all. In fact, the sphere grid itself is an illusion of choice now that I think about it.

3 was okay. Not absolute shit in terms of the third, but 2 was.

Didn't have the hook that the first did or something. I think when it went handheld it definitely lost something. The story got lost in a bunch of shitty little skirmishes.

shin megami tensai strange journey was fun, never finished it though. Final Fantasy 9 is also my favorite final fantasy
