That part is the fault of the localization. Not really the original staff. But she's not that interesting in the original game either.

Fun fact: The guy who added all those accents in Chrono Cross is the same guy who added the accents into Dragon Quest games. He ran away from SquareEnix and works for Blizzard now.

chrono cross was terrible, what are you talking about?

first, it tries to be a sequel to an amazing game, yet diverges from the original game's storyline so much that it becomes a completely different and unrelated story. why did they even make it a "chrono" game? they could have taken out the chrono trigger elements and the game wouldn't even have changed by 1%.

secondly, that fucking unbelievably convoluted story. the story was so disjointed and convoluted that it makes metal gear solid 2 look like a children's book in comparison.

third, way too many fucking characters, and almost all are retarded. recruit any random dude you meet. recruit their wives! recruit their fucking pets! too many characters means that none are fleshed out at all, becomes a sea of fucking "single quirk" characters.

the game was unbelievably retarded. I actually played through hoping that it would get better, but instead it kept getting worse and worse. I finished it and wish I had never bought it.

one of the worst games I've ever played.

Accents work perfectly fine in text the moment you realize which accent they're going for, it's never again an issue after the first few lines of someone who speaks with an accent's dialogue. Mark Twain and Shakespeare don't turn people off due to "accents" but due to the shitty, awkward, and simply uncommon word placement, choices, and overall composition of people's sentences.

Chrono Trigger was a pretty straightforward, juvenile adventure with a bit of drama, but overall it had a silly and lighthearted tone.

Chrono Cross on the other hand deals with the consequences of altering the timeline. There's lots of death and sorrow, the main theme being that a life of a singe person can change the outcome of the future, creating many possibilities. I think the moment that had the biggest impact on me was when I realized I was walking inside a huge metropolis completely engulfed in tidal waves, which turned out to be the main area of El Nido where the game takes place, set some years ahead. Ruins of a civilization caught in a glimpse of time. One of many possible timelines destined for failure.

The atmosphere feels dark, unpleasant and heavy. Porre takes over Guardia, Crono and Marle are missing/dead, Lucca is dead, Robo becomes a locking mechanism for the frozen flan. Even the Masamune is responsible for many deaths and turns any person that starts wielding the legendary sword insane. Overall Chrono Cross keeps a pretty serious tone throughout the game, despite the main character being accompanied by a sword-bearing talking vegetable and a luchador psychic priest.
