You don't. The idea is that you'll probably run around in a circle at the edges of the room trying to see what you can do or examine. You'll eventually work your way towards the door and make it outside.

And how exactly are you supposed to know how to go outside of your room? Admittedly, it took me about 20 minutes, but once I got out and explored everywhere, there was this kid who kept sliding around and blocked me from going to the one area I obviously haven't gone to yet.

Really, the game could have at least put a small arrow or a glow around the doorframe, but, alas, methinks the devs just didnt have the prowess to do so in that far off yesteryear. Still, the game is a god amongst its peers, and I am constantly aware of this whilst I am playing it.
Yeah, see, I did. This is a really good example of where in-game tutorials from that era were completely confusing and unhelpful. I guess it could be chalked up to a bad translation, which from what I read on hardcore 101 was really common at the time, but I was just running around the forest town and couldn't do anything. Like I said there was a big hallway I wanted to go down, but there was an elf kid who would constantly block me and wouldn't let me go further into the story.
I did and I gotta say I'm not impressed with how little there is to do. Maybe it's because of the memory capacity of the N64 carts, but I'm hopping on lily pads and crawling through tunnels, which is sort of endearing but the whole game world really only feels like a tech demo. Then suddenly a UFO starts shooting at me. I really don't get this game.
