You can beat the game without builds, my "build" was by going through every vocation one by one until it was maxed out and then moving onto the next one, the same for my pawn and turned out fine, at most you may need to level up a few more levels to beat BBI than someone with a slightly better build and even then at lvl 200 you will shit stomp everything, pawns you hire are more important regarding your success, just hire what you need which is pretty much cookie cutter depending on if you are at post game or not or in BBI.

Your pawn learns from other players too, so I once got my pawn Aigis back and she had learned to run up cliffs and ledges and jump off to do a downward strike using her greatsword, and she would do this reliably EVERY time I got in a fight near a ledge, it was kinda awesome.

No. Not unless the new pawn is also a mage, then Rook can teach them what he knows (which isn't much).

Also, you can teach other pawns, but what they learn does not set in until they go back to their owner. This means if you pirate you can only ever teach your own pawn stuff because the rest are randomly generated and have no owners.
