There were plenty of DK games: Donkey Konga, Jungle Beat, Jungle Climber, Barrel Blast, Mario vs Donkey Kong

They haven't put the series on hold, they just can't think of any good ideas. Nintendo themselves couldn't think of any good ideas and every other developer they asked rejected them because they didn't think they could match Super Metroid. That's why the series remained dormant until the Prime series and that's presumably why the series died after Other M. The only other developer that's big enough to make a big home console game AND are actually willing to work on the series is Retro Studios (who wanted to do Tropical Freeze after they finished DKCR). Federation Force is a smaller side-game made by a smaller studio who only have the resources to make a handheld game.

Sakamoto screwed with the Prime 3 development, and key talent left to make games with more freedom. Nintendo of Japan can make whatever stupid game they want regardless of sales, but Retro seem to be on a tight leash. It's amazing that they still have made better games than any of the Japan teams since considering that they never even made platformers before Donkey Kong Country Returns. Nintendo of Japan, on the other hand, were considered masters of the genre.

Source? I'm fairly certain Sakamoto had little to no involvement with the Prime series. He never got more than a "Special Thanks" in the credits and he's gone on record saying that he didn't contribute much towards them.

Enough. "Representation" is just a meaningless buzzword that people use to justify their favorite characters getting in. What fans of series like DK and Metroid don't understand is that the reason why we seem to have a lot of Pokémon and Fire Emblem characters in Smash is because those series have tons of different characters to choose from, unlike DK or Metroid. It has nothing to do with Nintendo "hating" anything.

Besides, while Sakamoto has been out of control for a while, I'm fairly certain that Yellow Samus was dropped because Samus eventually had enough types of power suits that they could fill all her palettes with suits from the games (with the exception of green samus). Yellow Samus was never an alt color for Samus in Smash.
