Well there seems to be a line signifying that it's breakable in your picture. It's noticeable on emulators too, but I've heard you can't see it when you play on an actual n64, but it's been so long since I've played one I couldn't tell you for sure.

To be fair, some of those names don't mention the wall so, assuming the seam isn't visible on an n64, you could only find it by trial and error in those versions.

In Mario 64 there is a wall that you're supposed to blast yourself into with a cannon, but it's fairly notorious for not being very clear that's what you're supposed to do.

I always knew to hit the actual wall but there was NOTHING in the game to indicate you should hit that specific corner.

Well "blast" should tell you that the cannon is involved, and then there are only so many things that could be thought of as a "wall" to try destroying.

To be fair, that was basically a trial-and-error star since there are many walls and several that could be shot at from the cannon's range. I think I ran into it by accident my first time through.
I also got into the Eyerok boss without standing on the 4 pillars because a stupid strategy guide told me to back kick into it.
