6th gen was perfect, I was an idort but I feel you were a winner regardless of which console you owned, even if it was a Dreamcast.
My friends and I played pretty much everything from Nightfire to Dark Legacy, Halo, Brute Force, Soul Calibur 3, DoA Ultimate and 3, Mario Kart DD, Melee, etc. It was a good time for both single player and multiplayer
dark cloud and GTA 3 were my first games im think vice city san andreas gran turismo 3/4
>game cube i had prime 1 and 2 lil bro had some games
xbox came with halo and dad modded the console for us so we had lots of vidya until we brought xbox to grandmothers house and the outlet shorted out and killed the xbox >that halo map pack
>dream cast mom bought one at a yard sale with bunch of games >tfw friend next day tells me there was a dream cast at a yard sale but someone else got it >tfw told him it was me me and lil bro never wanted alot of games
we just played the fuck out of what ever few games we had so for almost every console/handheld we only had 10 games max
>It's impossible for people to get used to improved controls/physics/framerates and find it hard to go back.
Play any modern FPS then play Goldeneye again. Hell, play Wind Waker or Twilight Princess then Ocarina of Time again. Controls feel far more fluid in the newer stuff which can ruin older games for them.
>tfw you only had a cube throughout that generation
There were many great games released for it, but holy shit those droughts and lack of third party support was fucking brutal. Having to play Metroid Prime or Rouge Squadron for the upteenth time while seeing commercials for games that were only on PS2 and Xbox sucked hard.
In hindsight, I don't know why I never just asked for a PS2 for Christmas.
N64 gets too much hate. I never claimed it's the best console ever, but it's more than just "mario and zelda" as you guys claim.
I agree a lot of fanboys are just blind nostalgia kids who started gaming with Mario 64 and OOT, but the same can be said about nostaliga fagos on PS1 with trash like Crash and Spyro, or kids who started on Saturn with.... wait, nobody owned a Saturn in the west back then, except me, and I loved Nights.
He's actually a hilarious guy, he insists that only americans like Nintendo (in general, not just the 64) and also claims PAL is better than NTSC and defends the censorship on the PAL version of castlevania bloodlines. He also thinks the correct way to pronounce Sega is "See-guh" because that's how they pronounce it in Australia.
Own a Xbox which doesn't work anymore (i've been thinking in fix it for the third time). My collection: MGS2, GTA Double Pack (III and VC), The Godfather, Sega GT 2002/JSRF bundle, DOA3, Halo, Spider-Man 2, FIFA Street 2002, Fable, Brute Force, Driv3r, Jade Empire, Winning Eleven 9, FIFA 06, DOAXBBV, Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath, Silent Hill (2 and 4), Project Gotham Racing 2, Halo 2, used to own Soul Calibur II (trade it and regret it) and Def Jam: FFNY (lend it, but the asshole broke it).
Planing to buy more Xbox games and a Gamecube, already bought MGS: TS.
Owned a PS2. Didn't get to play much because it broke and I didn't have money to get another at the time. Also got a gamecube like 2 years after they came out. Played a lot of Tony Hawk, Star Wars Battlefront, and 1st party nintendo shit
I have more Gamecube games and I've put more time into Melee than all the games I own for PS2 put together, but I have more all time favorites on PS2 than Gamecube. Dreamcast is cool, but you can tell its a transitional console in a lot of the games. All the Xbox had going for it was leftover unfinished Dreamcast games and Ninja Gaiden Black
Gamecube has a lot of 3rd party games and Xbox has a lot of japanese exclusives like Gun Valkyrie, Jet Set Radio Future, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Otogi, Wolf Metal Chaos and more.
I agree he kinda missed on PS2 because it has a huge catalog, but also PS2 was the weakest one in terms of hardware, got the worst multiplats and watered down ports of games like RE4 and Viewtiful Joe that started as GC exclusives.
>>323447034 >Gun Valkyrie, Jet Set Radio Future, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Otogi, Wolf Metal Chaos Congratz, you listed all of them besides Ninja Gaiden and Steel Battalion. That's 7 exclusives, meanwhile the PS2 had like 200 Japanese exclusives.
>>323446451 >I've put more time into Melee than all the games I own for PS2 put together Same here. I easily had more games for the PS2, but Gamecube titles are still what I spent the most time with by far.
>trying to sequence break metroid prime and get into secret worlds >reading through melee trophies and learning about all those cool japanese characters/games for the first time >having a buddy over after school everyday for like two weeks so we could play and unlock everything in soulcalibur 2 together God I miss the sixth gen, or at least that time of my life in general.
> Halo 2 DLC > Paywall For like a month before it went free. Most DLC on Xbox Live was free. The only paid DLC I can remember is some DLC for Project Gotham 2, but I think it also had a sizable free DLC portion available.
>>323441241 I got a GC shortly after launch, then a PS2, and eventually an Xbox. Definitely played the PS2 the most but probably have a lot more memories from the Gamecube. Xbox was fun but nothing too iconic for me.
>>323447427 >Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath I'll give you that one >GTA: San Andreas Released first on PS2 >Beyond Good and Evil Multiplat, even gamecube had it. >KOTOR Sure, but it was on PC. >Any 3D GTA So there are so few good western games, that you resorted to saying GTA twice.
>Too young to buy any games. >Stuck with a GC and two games for the whole 6th generation cause family poor. >Read EGM at the public library and imagine I was playing all the new games coming out.
I'm an idiort with a job now and can technically emulate most of those games now but it's not the same. Bittersweet that I can now play the games but they don't have the same impact they could have had when I was younger.
Off the top of my head, 4 player Power Stone 2 multiplayer was probably one of the most fun games ever. Jet Set Radio. Playing pass the pad with my friend on Ninja Gaiden and general early online console stuff (Phantasy Star, Halo 2).
All in all probably my favourite gen, or at least I probably had the most enthusiasm for vidya at that time.
I still have the DC, but lost the AC adapter, because, third world country energy.
I played what I could get my hands on, I cherish the DC for San Francisco Rush, Jet Set Radio and Sakura Taisen 3. I fondly remember on PS2 Finishing Shadows of the Colossus and how my mood changed from getting Killer 7 to actually playing it. I also remember Burn Out Revenge, which to me is the peak of the series, no matter what everyone says.
The PS2 was a wild time where you could still get experimental titles and have a great time.
Does anyone remembers Shadows of Memories? That was a magical time when Konami made Quality vidya.
>>323447316 >those mountain dew fueled all nighters spent playing countless melee matches and agent under fire with your friends >finally turning off the system at sunrise >end up staying awake and telling old stories/talking about hopes for the futures until they everyone goes home
I hope my old group still remember those days like I do.
I inherited my two older brothers NES and TurboGrafX16, also had a kind of...old computer in the basement that had a racing game and ZORK on jt. Got an SNES for my...5th or 6th birthday I think? Got a Nintendo 64 on Christmas of the release year, had a family PC sometime either before or after that with games like Neverhood and A Bridge Too Far.
From that point, a PS1, a Dreamcast, then a PS2, Xbox, then a 360. I don't have any new consoles since then. Mainly play on my PC now.
Also had a Gameboy Color and a GBA SP.
Loved the shit out of al of them. Too many great games to name. One that sticks out especially from "later" consoles to me was the Dreamcast. Huge library of fun niche titles, playing PSO v.2 online was mind blowing to me. It was probably the last console I had that felt like it was strictly focused on games across the board as opposed to being a multimedia machine that happens to play games.
its dead because games are too advanced and consoles can't handle them like they used to. consider this. Doing split screen was easy back in the day because the console had enough power to keep the graphical fidelity and the frame rate solid. nowadays, even though consoles are more powerful then they have ever been, games are that much more complicated and rendering 1080p at even 30 fps on two separate screens is basically impossible.
Everyone i knew only had a n64 or ps1. I was one of the few if not the only kid with a sega saturn. For some reason everyone was fascinated by it and loved the controller and really thought it had the best looking graphics
I know a lot of people dont care for arcade games but to me that has always been the draw of sega. Perfect arcade ports and tons of score and time based games built for replaying. Theres still no other company like them, since namco and konami are dead.
>>323441241 devs killed couch co-op >go to friend's house who bough xboner >hey let's play halo co-op! >oh fucking halo doesn't have co-op nor local play like wtf, IDGAF if it looks like potato with 2 people splitscreen but it would be damn nice to even have the option
I got a PS2 first which was my favorite console and probably still is. I later got a Xbox and Gamecube and I'm pretty sure I used the Xbox more since Halo craze. I didn't have a Dreamcast until last year so it's pretty fun getting to build up my collection there and try the games for it.
>>323449460 Well I never said the ports were better, they just aren't watered down. In the case of those two games Capcom threw in some extra novelty to make up for the fact the gamecube versions looked better. So they actually have more content on PS2.
Next time, don't run your mouth about shit you know nothing about, or you'll get BTFO again.
Or you are the desperate here, or you haven't played them. In both cases, you aren't proving your point, and i keep mine: western makes great games and Xbox was a good console. Shame they introduced the pay for online system, nobody should defend that.
>>323446103 I was like that anon and yes I was poor Even when my family was starting to become better off they still didn't like buying me newer vidya, they thought that my current vidya was supposed to last me a lifetime or some shit, so flea markets and garage sales with cheap retro consoles (back before hipsters inflated prices) became the only time that games were cheap enough that they would say "ok"
>>323449814 >western makes great games Lol no. Voodo Vince is ok, never played Buffy but I imagine it's no Ninja Gaiden. >Xbox was a good console. It was an ok console, the weakest of the generation though.
Is there an official definition as to what consitutes a "watered down port"? I think having worse graphics and slowdowns means a port is watered down. Not as good as the original = watered down, even if you throw in a few extras to make up for it.
>>323449520 I joined a guild on FFXIV that isn't a "/v/ guild" but almost everyone in it posts on /v/. Out of 30 people we have maybe three over the age of 21, including me. About 2/3 of the group are exactly 18 or 19.
I don't know why it surprises people when they find out /v/ is a haven for literal high schoolers. Where did you think all the vitriol and paranoia comes from?
Quit refreshing this collective twitter feed of autistic children and go play some Ace Combat. I'm serious. Close this tab. Turn off your monitor. Go do something else. Imagine your dipshit little brother and how annoying he is. That's who you're posting with if you don't leave right now.
>>323444781 My man, I remember this. There were many crossovers, but as a kid seeing halo or GTA on the other system made my mouth water.
I was happy with my Timesplitters 2-3 and Ghost Recon, though. Damn I used to play those all day. Recently went back to Rogue Leader and found it VERY hard to play, but I played through TS 2 & 3 about 2 years ago and it still felt pretty good aside from shit graphics.
What an age of mystery though. Internet not big and retarded enough to spoil everything and trolls were much more effective at planting fake "secrets" (like sonic being in SSBM)
>>323450221 As a huge DBZ fag, i was used to playing hundreds of hours of each budokai game. around the 80th hour of that game, the loading times started getting atrocious, and i thought it was the game disc. around hour 90, my ps2 just shut off while i was fighting Frieza as Krillan and never turned on again. I really think it was straining game.
I took the game over to a friends hows and it ran fine.
>>323450075 Ok PS2 i'll give you 10 >Devil May Cry 1&3 >Onimusha >Metal Gear Solid 2&3 >Dark Cloud 1&2 >Shinobi >Shadow of the Colossus >Odin Sphere >Gran Turismo 4 >Any SMT or Persona game for the console >Ace Combat
Xbox >Jet Set Radio Future >Panzer Dragoon Orta >Ninja Gaiden Black >Otagi (based FROM) >Gun Valkyrie
As time goes on the average age for /v/ stays the same. always 17-20.
It is sad because I remember distinctly that anyone who came after 2006 were eternal newfags, and I came in late 2008 as a underage too. Now we are at the point where anyone from that period has been here longer than the original posters - since most of them stopped many years ago. us newfags took over and shaped /v/ into the meme cesspool it is today.
The PS2 was the worst and led to the state of gaming today. It sold for non-gaming reasons and wasn't supported by the top companies aside from maybe Namco, Capcom and Konami who were all dying by that point anyway. Its commercial success told execs that they didn't need to make good game machines, just multimedia centers with controllers and the rest would follow. The next gen followed that formula (except for the Wii which was basically gen 6.5) and now that's all the market has become.
>>323450149 >I'm sorry my wording hurt your feelings. Just give it up man, it's getting pathetic. You got BTFO, so I gave you some benifit of the doubt and then you go and run your mouth again.
You clearly don't have both games on both consoles, but I'll fill you in. Both run fine and look fine. There isn't a noticeable difference unless side by side, that's why I wouldn't call them watered down.
Now stop shitposting on your phone and listen to your teacher, wait till you get home from school.
>>323450745 This one? I had the regular Family Game like the one I posted.
On Coleco I had Smurf: rescue in gargamel's castle, I think it was my first game ever. That game looked amazing for 1982 standards. (I played it much later though, but I knew no better at the time, and compared to the other games on the coleco, Smurf looked the best, "like a real TV cartoon")
>>323450681 I had a hand-me-down NES and TurboGrafX16 from my older brothers first (they're 41 and 38 for reference). >>323448595 is my console history. I didn't get the PS1 till AFTER the N64. I could be wrong about when I got the 64 though. Might've been Christmas of '97, but it wasn't long after it released. I played a LOT of my SNES before jumping to 64 though
>>323451361 The framerate wasn't the reason, broken AA hardware was. Devs didn't want pixels on the screen so they went with a bit lower resolution and supersampled. It made the picture blurry but at least with less pixelization.
>>323451375 >first year nice revisionism, they were expensive for most of its lifespan and keep in mind the PS2 went through price cuts as well so it stayed competitive as a DVD player. Once those floodgates were opened (a bit like how Nintendo disguised the NES as an "entertainment center" VHS-esque thing) it gained huge market traction and became the go-to console because everyone and their dog had one. Doesn't mean it was any good.
>>323451537 >yes I did notice slowdown on PS2 viewtiful joe. Watered down. Jesus bud, idk if you're having a tantrum or you're really trying to force a meme, or both.
Because you don't know what you're talking about. In no way are those ports watered down. To be watered down they would be like bare bones like Tony Hawk 3 on PS2 compared to the PS1 port. Viewtiful Joe is the same game on both ports, and I never noticed a frame drop on my two playthroughs, my second playthrough as Dante btw.
>>323452031 So did the price of the PS2. You could either get a device that could only play DVDs or one that could also play games for a similar/lower price, which option do you think people went with? Stop being retarded.
You already accepted the PS2 ports aren't as good as the originals.
You decide to say "not as good as the originals", I decide to call them watered down. Same shit.
Deal with fucking it, you're the one having a tantrum, it's a known fact VJ on PS2 has slowdowns and worse framerate, if you haven't noticed then good for you, ignorance is a bliss and I guess you're bad at detecting performance issues.
Mine came with a 30 in 1 cart, no Super Mario, but lots of classics like Adventure Island, Contra, Circus Charlie, Ice Climbers and many others early famicom games.
>I still have some cartridges with me, even though I no longer have the console, and now all the famiclones come in shapes of PS3 and modern consoles. It's sad.
The newer famiclones are really shit, they're all NOAC (Nes on a chip), as opposed to the actual 80s/90s famiclones which were real clones of the Famicom. And they're expensive now because people collect them, even if they're bootlegs, they're old so it's not easy to come across ones in good shape.
Owned a GCN and PS2, got GCN first. Currently own a GCN and PS2 though not the same PS2.
Best memory? Tie between the Summer I got a PS2 with greatest hits copies of Sly Cooper, Ratchet & Clank, and Kingdom Hearts, or the Christmas I got Paper Mario Thousand Year Door and Mario Kart Double Dash.
Played PS2 the most.
I was playing some Super Monkey Ball 2 earlier this morning, got my CRT back and am on vacation from work, so maybe playing some 6th gen stuff wouldn't be too bad.
Viewtiful Joe is a trade off thing with 1 at least. I prefer Gamecube version but Dante is pretty awesome. I also can't unlock Blue...just not good enough, so that cheat on the PS2 version is kinda nice for me with that. I remember being a kid and playing the demo kiosk. Took a while before I owned it, but I rented it all the time.
>>323452058 childhood memories are tricky things. I remember thinking that nothing could look better then ff8, that the graphics were fucking in credible and highly detailed. I could swear i could see details that weren't there, like earings on quistis. then when i replayed it a few weeks before the 360 came out, it was total ass in looks
>>323451054 >>323450668 It's nice to see a few oldfags itt. I probably won't be here much longer now that my life actually has direction (along with this place losing every ounce of novelty it once had). Hope you guys can make it out too. Who knows, maybe we'll even enjoy vidya again someday.
>>323452565 >You decide to say "not as good as the originals", I decide to call them watered down. Same shit. Bruh, when you come across a game that is actually watered down, you'll know it.
This whole exchange tells me you've haven't played all that many games and don't have a good frame of reference for what is a bad port. And I was the one who wasn't an idort and can't detect performance issues, lmao.
At this point you are trying to force a meme, based on something you read on /v/ or /vr/ that you don't know for sure yourself. Otherwise you wouldn't keep getting BTFO. But go ahead, move the goal posts or put words in my mouth.
>>323446732 The XBOX wasn't out in most place until 2002, and even in NA it was only out in like November or so. Of those I think only Dark Alliance actually came out on the XBOX on the same year it was released.
>MGS doesn't show me why eastern games are superior, they are as good as any good western game, not better. >I have played several Final Fantasy, gosh, what a borefest, i just don't get the appeal for combat system, may as well play with a DVD menu >We agree on the third point >I beat Ninja Gaiden Black in very hard, can't remember what rate i got, and i didn't recorded the thing, i didn't knew at the time i eventually had to prove wrong to some weeb, what i got from it's combat system is that you can izuna drop all your way to the end.
>>323453369 The point is that the PS2 had no chance to compete in price with the DVD players. If all you wanted to do was to watch DVDs then only a retard would go for a more expensive device with a wired controller.
Let's leave it at that, we're discussing semantics. We both agree that the PS2 ports aren't as good as the GC originals. And yes the extras are nice and all, but the performance isn't as good. Whether you consider that to not be enough to call it "watered down" or not, doesn't matter, they're not as good.
As for /vr/.... no, 6th gen isn't /vr/ and hopefully it will continue to be that way.
>>323445692 SNK still made excellent sprite art, just look at KoFXIII. But now with KoF going CGI the last bastion of decent sprite art is pretty much gone, some indie devs still know how to make some good ones but still not on the same level there was back then.
>>323453764 >MGS doesn't show me why eastern games are superior, they are as good as any good western game, not better. Are you one of those faggots that says Dark Souls isn't a JRPG? >I have played several Final Fantasy, gosh, what a borefest. Tread lightly, Anon. There could be stray SMT fans, they'd eat you alive for even daring to say it SMT as good as Final Fantasy. Also you didn't deny my point about being a 12 year old with a 360, so I guess you are.
>I beat Ninja Gaiden Black in very hard Suuuuure you did, Anon, I believe you.
>>323454306 It sold because people wanted both for the same price instead of spending $300-500 to get them separately. That's why it sold as a DVD player game console. The reason people focus on the DVD part is because that's what made it skyrocket ahead of the competition.
>>323453409 I absolutely agree, but I don't recall my childhood being concerned about graphics, when I jumped from the Famicom to the Mega Drive, I was mind blown, but I could still go back to the famicom and enjoy the games that could only be enjoyed there without any concern on how it looks compared to the brand new Mega Drive. The same happened when I jumped from the PS1 to the PS2, I first played The Bouncer on PS2 and was fantastic looking, but I was still playing Echo Night on PS1 and enjoying the fuck out of it.
>Are you one of those faggots that says Dark Souls isn't a JRPG? I hope so, because i won't buy Bloodborne (a supposedly spiritual succesor) if it's anything like a JRPG.
>Also you didn't deny my point about being a 12 year old with a 360, so I guess you are. Because i wish i were. Nah, it's because i didn't even noticed. At my almost 25 yo, i still think turn based system is utter shit.
>Suuuuure you did, Anon, I believe you. Good to know.
>>323455037 Oh don't misunderstand anon, i fucking love the games of my past and i hardly care about graphics either
I'm of the mind that graphics shouldn't have advanced past maybe the wii. the wii as someone said is basically 6.5, and i just imagine what sort of lovely games the consoles nowadays could use their power on if everyone wasn't obsessed with graphics., like, we could have unique AI for all enemies in a dynasty warriors game or something, i dunno. I like pretty graphics but i think the pursuit of them has led to a detriment in games
>>323455269 >I never said you weren't an idort, stop taking my posts so personal. >I wasn't talking about "you" I was talking about "you" in my post >stop taking things so personally. I was only pretending to be retarded.
I've been saying "watered down" is just a term for a few posts now. What I meant originally hasn't changed: the PS2 ports don't run as good as the original GC games. But I won't say "watered down" again because that triggers you, so I'll just say they aren't as good.
>>323455618 I agree that horsepower now should be used to improve on the little things, and The Order is the clear example of what shouldn't be repeated. I liked the nobility of Dead Rising 3 using horse power to put more zombies on screen, though the game itself didn't do much with it. I like graphics getting better, but I appreciate more if the resources are used on making every square inch of the game an experience you can remember rather than a shiny mirror you will only look once.
I don't even know why you started getting so defensive, I don't really hate the PS2 ports and I already said twice that I like that they added Dante, I just prefer the GC version if I can choose which one of the versions to play.
Had: DC and PS2 Played: shit ton of fighting games and RPGs and some FPS Mounted my DC & PSOne onto the back side of front right passenger seat of my ride with a monitor, and had some quality CVS/Alpha 3 with my old crew. I don't know why "portable" modification of consoles stopped being a thing after gen 6, but it was great while it lasted.
I got "BTFO" because you actually took the effort to go and take a picture of your old beaten up cube and your caseless VJ and RE4 discs? hah. I don't care dude, I prefer the GC version just as the other guy also said. Dante is cool but that's it. DWI.
threadly reminder, if you were born before 1990, you are a minority here and belong in >>>/vr/ http://strawpoll.me/6031352/ http://strawpoll.me/6031352/ http://strawpoll.me/6031352/ http://strawpoll.me/6031352/
I don't want to derail the thread but, sorry if i don't want to see a bunch of guys running for 10 seconds and then lots of ads. Also, the real football deserves the name more: it actually makes sense and got it first.
6th gen was the last time there there were major differences between the different platforms. Sure, there were mutliplats, but there were also so many exclusive games on all platforms. Each one felt unique.
7th gen and beyond, everything has streamlined and 99% of games are multiplat and we're at the point where there's so little difference between consoles that fanboys just nitpick the one or two exclusives they have, even though the other 100 games are all the same.
And holy shit were the games good. On all consoles and PC, for that matter. It was that sweet spot where we could do relatively advanced stuff and yet not so technologically advanced that development is expensive as fuck and everything is focused grouped to hell and released on all systems.
Can't we all just agree Viewtiful Joe is good no matter what you play it on? Yes, I said I prefer the Gamecube version, it performs better, but no version is by any means bad. It's certainly not Bayonetta PS3 bad.
Anyways, should I replay Skies of Arcadia Legends? I found it in my box of Gamecube games and remember having a great time with it.
>miss couch co-op >think how it sucks that online gaming killed couch co-op >feel like a luddite for it but don't care >haven't played anything on the same screen as anyone else except for smash in years >brother gets an xbone for christmas >I go over and we play black ops 3 split screen >remember how much it sucks trying to share screen real estate regardless of how big the TV is >realize we're not really getting anything out of this that we wouldn't get from playing online together >wonder why I miss couch co-op at all other than nostalgia >can't think of anything
Split screening is shit. And with more than two players fucking forget it. It's only real appeal is cost since you can have four people play for the cost one game/console instead of everyone having to get their own...but we're all adults now and dropping a few hundred bucks on a console isn't the massive summer goal it was when we were kids, it's just something you think about for a few minutes to find the best package deal before ordering.
>>323457982 >sorry if i don't want to see a bunch of guys running for 10 seconds I would rather that for 3 hours, with about 2 minutes of over the top, hype as shit plays, than 5 hours of NOTHING FUCKING HAPPENING
>>323458287 Sharing a screen was never the good thing about couch multiplayer. It was having a real person in the room with you, that you could talk shit with and just enjoy spending time with together.
>>323448186 The Xbox also had the S-Controller after the Japanese release. They literally had to make smaller Controllers for the manlet japs and ended up selling the smaller Controller world wide. It is one of the better controllers in Vidya history too.
>>323459891 Because we didn't have good internet or cheap microphones. Now we do and we can bullshit and chat with our friends even when our schedules and life situations utterly prevent sharing a couch together. Yeah, it's not quite the same as hanging out in person but for the purpose of playing games it's not that different.
>>323461172 standard definition is 480i. That means interlaced. Of the 480 total horizontal lines that make up the image, only half are displayed per frame. So you'll have even lines displayed during the first frame, the odds displayed during the second frame, etc.
This results in a "flickering" effect on unmoving objects, especially things like the HUD and text in general. And it's more blurry. 480p displaces each frame with all 480 lines, and looks much crisper. It's not "HD" but it's still better than 480i.
Also on modern LCD displays, when they get a 480i signal, they have to do deinterlacing to make a "fake" progressive picture and then go from there. This results in disgusting lag and image quality that looks like fucking shit. This is the reason why, when people go back and play their standard def games on their modern TVs, they wince at the graphics and say "ugh, I don't remember this game being this ugly back in the day". And that's because it wasn't. It looked much better on the CRT it was designed for.
>>323462030 Not him, but I wouldn't call the 5th gen garbage. What it lacked in quantity it had in quality. SOTN, Mario 64, Paper Mario, Resident Evil 2, Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, Mischief Makers. It was solid.
>>323462257 >What it lacked in quantity PS1 wasn't exactly lacking in quantity, the N64 was. The problem is moreso the fact that 3D hadn't really matured yet so it was mostly shit textures, aliasing up the ass and shit framerates. That's probably why SEGA designed the Saturn as a 2D powerhouse initially... they weren't expecting the market to shift to shaky tech so quickly.
>>323462160 No problem. If you want to know more, just check out /vr/, since TVs, image scalers, and signal types are often discussed there due to the problems that older video games have on modern TVs.
>>323462386 you know, i went to a local halo tournement and they let you bring your own controller, i was the only one who brought a Duke, everyone else had third party shit. the top prize was a console of your choice, I made it to the quarter finals but i only lost because they didn't let me change my settings to inverted, which is what i was used to at the time since the 64 forced me to learn it.i bet i could have gotten a gamecube much earlier if i was allowed to change my settings
This is why i don't do tourneys, everyone i've ever done has faggy rules outside of the ones in game. like how you can only pick certain stages in smash bros
>>323462506 It's hard to decide what the "right" move would've been, even in hindsight. Perhaps they should've waited until 1998/1999 to start releasing 3D-capable consoles that could actually put out decent 3D visuals AND at good framerates.
I definitely think that 5th gen's jump to 3D was too premature. But at the same time, there's no other realistic way it could've been done. I can't overemphasize how fucking impressive 3D was back in those days. It didn't matter if everything was blocky and ran at 15fps. It didn't matter that, looking back, high quality 2D sprite games look better than early 3D. the 3D just had that stupendous "wow factor" and there's no way it wouldn't have happened at that time.
>>323463019 Well PC was already breaking new ground in the mid-90s with 3D so yeah, it was inevitable that consoles would follow. It's just that the Japanese philosophy of doing more with less REALLY wasn't suited to 3D until 6th gen which is why people, in retrospect, don't like 5th gen as much. Those who do mostly do so because of childhood nostalgia and the "WOW MARIO IN THREEEEDEEEE" effect. It didn't do anything for me at the time because I was already busy playing Descent and shit.
>>323463373 The thing is...it's hard not to do that these days since every console except Nintendo basically is a low grade PC with a few exclusives. 6th gen was the last time consoles were truly diverse and doing their own thing.
Ever since I got a new PC earlier this year, I have been almost exclusively using it to emulate all those 6th gen-games that I missed out on back in the day. And holly fucking shit, did I miss out.
I never took this whole master race bullshit serioulsy, but I now realize how truly retarded these people are.
Gaming sucking today has nothing to do with consoles being unable to host engaging, deep games and everything to do with publishers pandering to a completely different audience than they did 10 years ago.
>>323464431 >Imo, Crysis was the swan-song of PC-gaming Nah there were several good PC RPGs that came out later. It just pushed the hardware at the time to the limits so it became a meme with PC builders.
My nigga. My mom ended up buying me this game for my birthday way back in the day. Of course she doesn't know anything about video games, and just happened to pick one out of a bargain bin. So of course I thought this would just be some mediocre piece of shit game. Turned out to be my favorite console FPS game ever made. Sunk so many hours into everything.
>>323441241 Ps2 had progressive retard. And the e reader actually served a decent function back then compared to amiibo-You could use e reader cards to get nes games, or animal crossing items and other cool stuff. With amiibo you don't really do anything with them. You train a cpu, you unlock a board in mario party 10, you don't get much out of amiibo. But they did try properly with the e reader. They knew nobody would buy cards and a peripheral without a reason. Amiibo they could get away with because most people just want the figures.
