I was around 13 when 6th gen was new. Bought a Dreamcast first, then a Gamecube, and I would trade my GC back and forth with a friend who had the PS2 until I got my own PS2 slim in like 2009.

Never got an Xbox.

I remember when I got the GC with Melee and all my friends buying their own GC controllers to play.

I owned a PS2, GCN, and XB.

Played the PS2 the most.

I think my favorite games were RE4, GTA SA, and Fable respectively.

6th gen was perfect, I was an idort but I feel you were a winner regardless of which console you owned, even if it was a Dreamcast.

My friends and I played pretty much everything from Nightfire to Dark Legacy, Halo, Brute Force, Soul Calibur 3, DoA Ultimate and 3, Mario Kart DD, Melee, etc. It was a good time for both single player and multiplayer

Play any modern FPS then play Goldeneye again. Hell, play Wind Waker or Twilight Princess then Ocarina of Time again. Controls feel far more fluid in the newer stuff which can ruin older games for them.

There were many great games released for it, but holy shit those droughts and lack of third party support was fucking brutal. Having to play Metroid Prime or Rouge Squadron for the upteenth time while seeing commercials for games that were only on PS2 and Xbox sucked hard.

Off the top of my head, 4 player Power Stone 2 multiplayer was probably one of the most fun games ever. Jet Set Radio. Playing pass the pad with my friend on Ninja Gaiden and general early online console stuff (Phantasy Star, Halo 2).

All in all probably my favourite gen, or at least I probably had the most enthusiasm for vidya at that time.

I played what I could get my hands on, I cherish the DC for San Francisco Rush, Jet Set Radio and Sakura Taisen 3.
I fondly remember on PS2 Finishing Shadows of the Colossus and how my mood changed from getting Killer 7 to actually playing it.
I also remember Burn Out Revenge, which to me is the peak of the series, no matter what everyone says.

The PS2 was a wild time where you could still get experimental titles and have a great time.

Does anyone remembers Shadows of Memories? That was a magical time when Konami made Quality vidya.

I inherited my two older brothers NES and TurboGrafX16, also had a kind of...old computer in the basement that had a racing game and ZORK on jt. Got an SNES for my...5th or 6th birthday I think? Got a Nintendo 64 on Christmas of the release year, had a family PC sometime either before or after that with games like Neverhood and A Bridge Too Far.

From that point, a PS1, a Dreamcast, then a PS2, Xbox, then a 360. I don't have any new consoles since then. Mainly play on my PC now.

Also had a Gameboy Color and a GBA SP.

Loved the shit out of al of them. Too many great games to name. One that sticks out especially from "later" consoles to me was the Dreamcast. Huge library of fun niche titles, playing PSO v.2 online was mind blowing to me. It was probably the last console I had that felt like it was strictly focused on games across the board as opposed to being a multimedia machine that happens to play games.

its dead because games are too advanced and consoles can't handle them like they used to. consider this. Doing split screen was easy back in the day because the console had enough power to keep the graphical fidelity and the frame rate solid. nowadays, even though consoles are more powerful then they have ever been, games are that much more complicated and rendering 1080p at even 30 fps on two separate screens is basically impossible.

Everyone i knew only had a n64 or ps1. I was one of the few if not the only kid with a sega saturn. For some reason everyone was fascinated by it and loved the controller and really thought it had the best looking graphics

I know a lot of people dont care for arcade games but to me that has always been the draw of sega. Perfect arcade ports and tons of score and time based games built for replaying. Theres still no other company like them, since namco and konami are dead.

Even when my family was starting to become better off they still didn't like buying me newer vidya, they thought that my current vidya was supposed to last me a lifetime or some shit, so flea markets and garage sales with cheap retro consoles (back before hipsters inflated prices) became the only time that games were cheap enough that they would say "ok"

The PS2 was the worst and led to the state of gaming today. The next gen followed that formula (except for the Wii which was basically gen 6.5) and now that's all the market has become.

The newer famiclones are really shit, they're all NOAC (Nes on a chip), as opposed to the actual 80s/90s famiclones which were real clones of the Famicom. 6th gen was the last time there there were major differences between the different platforms. Sure, there were mutliplats, but there were also so many exclusive games on all platforms. Each one felt unique.

7th gen and beyond, everything has streamlined and 99% of games are multiplat and we're at the point where there's so little difference between consoles that fanboys just nitpick the one or two exclusives they have, even though the other 100 games are all the same.

And holy shit were the games good. On all consoles and PC, for that matter. It was that sweet spot where we could do relatively advanced stuff and yet not so technologically advanced that development is expensive as fuck and everything is focused grouped to hell and released on all systems.

Split screening is shit. And with more than two players fucking forget it. It's only real appeal is cost since you can have four people play for the cost one game/console instead of everyone having to get their own...but we're all adults now and dropping a few hundred bucks on a console isn't the massive summer goal it was when we were kids, it's just something you think about for a few minutes to find the best package deal before ordering.

standard definition is 480i. That means interlaced. Of the 480 total horizontal lines that make up the image, only half are displayed per frame. So you'll have even lines displayed during the first frame, the odds displayed during the second frame, etc.

This results in a "flickering" effect on unmoving objects, especially things like the HUD and text in general. And it's more blurry. 480p displaces each frame with all 480 lines, and looks much crisper. It's not "HD" but it's still better than 480i.

Also on modern LCD displays, when they get a 480i signal, they have to do deinterlacing to make a "fake" progressive picture and then go from there. This results in disgusting lag and image quality that looks like fucking shit. This is the reason why, when people go back and play their standard def games on their modern TVs, they wince at the graphics and say "ugh, I don't remember this game being this ugly back in the day". And that's because it wasn't. It looked much better on the CRT it was designed for.

PS1 wasn't exactly lacking in quantity, the N64 was. The problem is moreso the fact that 3D hadn't really matured yet so it was mostly shit textures, aliasing up the ass and shit framerates. That's probably why SEGA designed the Saturn as a 2D powerhouse initially... they weren't expecting the market to shift to shaky tech so quickly.

It's hard to decide what the "right" move would've been, even in hindsight. Perhaps they should've waited until 1998/1999 to start releasing 3D-capable consoles that could actually put out decent 3D visuals AND at good framerates.

I definitely think that 5th gen's jump to 3D was too premature. But at the same time, there's no other realistic way it could've been done. I can't overemphasize how fucking impressive 3D was back in those days. It didn't matter if everything was blocky and ran at 15fps. It didn't matter that, looking back, high quality 2D sprite games look better than early 3D. the 3D just had that stupendous "wow factor" and there's no way it wouldn't have happened at that time.

Well PC was already breaking new ground in the mid-90s with 3D so yeah, it was inevitable that consoles would follow. It's just that the Japanese philosophy of doing more with less REALLY wasn't suited to 3D until 6th gen which is why people, in retrospect, don't like 5th gen as much. Those who do mostly do so because of childhood nostalgia and the "WOW MARIO IN THREEEEDEEEE" effect. It didn't do anything for me at the time because I was already busy playing Descent and shit.

And the e reader actually served a decent function back then compared to amiibo-You could use e reader cards to get nes games, or animal crossing items and other cool stuff. With amiibo you don't really do anything with them. You train a cpu, you unlock a board in mario party 10, you don't get much out of amiibo. But they did try properly with the e reader. They knew nobody would buy cards and a peripheral without a reason. Amiibo they could get away with because most people just want the figures.
