What make you choose the magic user in RPGs and MMOs?
Mages have a tendency to go two ways in every game no denying
a.) they're the most useless/weakest class out of all the classes available
b.) they're the most overpowered class out of all the classes available
They usually have the widest variety of things they can do. DPS spells, AoE spells, control spells like mind manipulation/paralysis/telekinesis, summoning spells. Some have mage aromor spells that let you be super tanky. If you can craft spells you can become super powerful. It's way more fun to disintegrate some chump with lightning than it is to just stab him. Though, if you wanted to, you could probably stab him with magic.
tl;dr magic can be anything and specializing or becoming great at all spells is fun
>Requires points and a particular spellbook to learn a spell you want
>All spells have a minimum fail rate
>Failing a spellcast hits you with a debuff or worse
>Chant times that leave you vulnerable and your character loses concentration if anything comes into contact with him
>Wearing anything heavier than a bathrobe multiplies the fail rate by at least 5x
>On success spells can still be evaded, blocked, or just plain resisted
Feels like a lot of wasted effort compared to just hitting the bastard
It depends on the game. There are rarely games where magic feels satisfying. My favorite RPG that had a great magic system was probably gothic because you became a fucking unstoppable god. In MMOs I usually pick healer because it's the hardest class to play.
magic knight is best class
