Don't get me wrong, I'm not hating. It just does more than tell you where you are when in reality that's the only thing it would do.
It draws the bodies of water, paths, even slope lines. Normally you'd have to mark those yourself.

I guess I see what you mean, though I think at least that part is fine. Drawing stuff on a map doesn't translate well from reality to a video game, and the implication in-game was never that finding out your position magically marks other stuff on your map, only that you use it to do that.

I think the bigger issue with the system is that it automatically references the correct landmarks, and tells you what landmarks you have and haven't marked on the map yet when you look at them. Would have been cool if you had to figure out (or guess) what you're looking at yourself, opening up the possibility of completely miscalculating your position.

Drawing stuff is useless when you are not next to a body of water, and insanely inaccuarate even when you are next to one. What you see in the game is a legitimate, in fact most common method of map-making and orientation in history, and a necessity when you are in less than easily overviewed terrain. Which is absolute majority of the game.

Trust me, the system is both fairly realistic, and ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY within the context of the game. Also, it makes it loads of fun.

The games work totally fine in PCSX2 so you can use those to emulate the final mix versions if you want. The PS3 remakes might be worth looking into because of the re-orchestrated OSTs which sound great, but you'll also have longer load times on PS3. Either is an acceptable way to get into the series, as long you make sure you get the final mix versions if you're emulating.
