How necessary was the step to use dbs.zip to rebuild database files? Because that ended up removing all of my downloaded games and apps on my N3DS before the step where they tell me to actually back up my SD card.

What I'm gonna do is back up the SD card contents, then put it all on 64 GB. Then go on Gateway through the browser, format emuNAND. Then take out SD card, put contents back, and re-inject emuNAND into the card. Correct?

Also, google how to format 64GB sdhc/sdxc as fat32... There's plenty of programs to do it. Windows cannot natively.

If it's bricked and you have a NAND backup, you just solder those four points to a SD card and you can flash the old NAND back thereby unbricking it.

Wrong. Formatting the emunand is part of the process if you want to still be able to log into your NNID.

2. Boot sysNAND without SD-Card and go to Settings → Formating.

3. Format! (It will ask for an internet connection (for logging off NNID from this device), but don't worry, it WILL NOT update!) - Your NAND's are after formating unlinked!

Don't forget to remove Smealum's DNS!

4. Setup you device again, but spare your try for logging in your NNID, you have to update FW for logging in, which no one of us wants.

5. Put SD-Card back in

At this point, you can't even use your NNID in the emuNAND, because Nintendo servers remebered your logging off process while formating, that's why you get the error 002-2634.

We need our 3DS on newest FW, not logged in, to log into our NNID

6. Boot into EmuNAND (rxTools, CakeFW, ReiNAND etc.)

7.Format your EmuNAND! (You made a backup of your SD-Card and emuNAND on it, so don't worry.
Don't forget to remove Smealum's DNS!

8. Boot into EmuNAND after formating, set up and log into your NNID – that should work know.
Note: I suggest to use Smealum's DNS 107.211.140.065, do it while you are setting up your device. This DNS blocks FW updates.

9. Restore SD-Cards data and EmuNAND.

10.Done!

this was made before emunand so there are a few extra steps.

you get the file and patch it as instructed. whats different is that you need to install the patched file into both emunand and sysnand(actual nand).

If you don't do this the games wont run from emunand. this means you also have to install the gba games in both nands(not the actual nand) for them to work from emunand.

You can also just install everything once in sysnand and ignore emunand but having to boot into different nands to do different things is inconvenient.

Just finished following that guide and got it working on a JP 3DS and N3DS.

Though there should be a warning before the first step to either not do the DB thing or make a backup prior to doing it because it would clear all of your downloaded games.
