Can we talk about this magnificent console?
Your favorite games for it, your first game for it or tell us about your buyer's remorse for getting an xbox instead, etc.
I'm currently playing games I never got the change to play for one reason or another, like the one that didn't make over seas from japan. I'm playing Front Mission 5 right now and would also like to play some action adventure or platformer in between. Any recommendations?
Too big to post: http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/vsrecommendedgames/images/0/06/Recommended_ps2_games.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20151026224949
Superior games library
An actually innovative and fantastic controller compared to "let's use the same dual analogic controller AGAIN!"
It stood by itself instead of relying on a gimmick (people bought it for the cheap DVD player, nothing more).
>Can we talk about this magnificent console?
It's not, the only thing it had going for it was the huge amount of games. The quality was for GC.
God Hand, DMC3SE, Captain Tsubasa, Shadow of the Colossus, Guitar Hero are my shit.
How duelist of the Roses?
It is though.
>Inb4 Sonypony denial using games charts.
If you think about that, the PS2 was by far the worst of the six-gen consoles. And I'm not just talking about the hardware.
Aggressive marketing really does wonders.
Well that didn't take long, even if it's 2 guys samefagging.
It's amazing how much butthurt the PS2 generates.
>Denialfag trying to justify being so poor he could only buy the shovelwaremachine.
>He didn't get to play the best versions of multiplats and the good exclusives from all platforms
It's butthurt fags that don't like to be reminded of the shit days they had envying their friends that got the superior console why they played DUDE HALO LMAO or DUDE SMASH LMAO, ZELDA AYYY
You might try Drakan: The Ancients' Gates. It's one of those games where I found it really satisfying to just explore the world and uncover its secrets.
Shinobi and/or Nightshade might be a good option if you're looking for something more action-focused.
>or tell us about your buyer's remorse for getting an xbox instead
OP you were asking for this to turn into a dumbfuck console war thread
even though there's no console war to be had anymore since that gen is long-since over but you know what people here are like
>/v/ can't even talk about the PS2 without shitposting
I want to get off this ride
Bought a ps2 slim to play ps2 games and
Ps2 slim has problem with bc.
Had to buy a psone now.
>Alone in the dark
>Red faction 1/2
>Project zero 1/2
>Ring of red
Don't know what else to go for.
>Can't find games on those retardedly huge libraries.
>Silent Hill 2&3
>Zone of the Enders 1&2
>Ace Combat 4, 5, 0
>Shadow of the Collosus
>Ratchet & Clank games
>Jak & Daxter games
>Sly Cooper games
>Devil May Cry 1, 3
>Shadow of Rome
>Beyond Good & Evil
>All the non-Disgaea stuff NIS was putting out on the system
Off the top of my head
It's not butthurt.
It's just that the PS2 was toxic for the videogame industry in a way not seen before, and was commercially successful without deserving it.
It was the next step of unethical, immoral tactics used by Sony with their Playstation brand.
>It's just that the PS2 was toxic for the videogame industry in a way not seen before
There was one console amongst the available ones that essentially started the trend of home consoles being shitty knockoff PCs with built-in features that it could do not-as-well as PCs could, which became the standard in general from then onwards
and it wasn't the PS2
>The same fucking games every single time
OK, I'm over with this thread, nothing good is going to happen.
Next time make a thread for the sixth generation as a whole, there are just too many memers who can't accept the former glory of Playstation brand.
It's fine if people dislike the system. Opinions and all that.
Most arguments against it are equally valid towards the Wii too though, a system which also has lots of great games as well as lots of shovelware. Yet people on here tend to disregard that.
Look what I got in the mail today.
Haven't had a PS2 for like 6 years. Feels like a lost family member coming back.
I bought a memory card with Free McBoot on it for $10. I could have figured it out myself but was lazy to go through all the steps.
My plan is to play pirated games through Ethernet from ISOs on my pc. Although I'll probably some actual PS2 discs as well.
Yeah but not by much
Flat out wrong
Flat out wrong but less shovelware then the PS2
Congrats on a meme party game for autists
Sorry didn't realize tried and true was bad and you have to reinvent the wheel just to please yet again wrong.
>Cheap DVD player
It was to some but again minus them the player base was still larger.
GC faggots are pathetic it was the worst console of the generation and was beat out by even the xboxs few masterpieces like Ninja Gaiden Black.
no console even comes close to the epicness of the ps2's game library, there were so many actually good games of diverse genres back then, i haven't played a single game this generation that made me think it was genuinely innovative
I cut grass when I was 10 and I used the money from that to get an xbox.
I didn't get to play PS2 exclusives until the HD remakes were released for PS3 like MGS and Ico.
I still think I made the right choice considering Halo 2 and xbox live.
shoot for expedited shipping. USPS has an extremely shitty processing centre there that will possibly leave your package in limbo.
My dpad and X button aren't working as well as they should. Gonna try putting foil behind them.
Got the console when i was eleven, the summer before i started secondary school. I got gta vice city, dragonball z budokai, smackdown just bring it, smackdown shut your mouth and tekken tag team tournament along with it. That summer was awesome. Resident evil 4, san andreas, pes 6, kingdom hearts 2 and ffx were probs my favourite games growing up with a ps2.
>How can someone fuck up so much in life? Now you're going to tell me you got a 360 too
How does it feel to have zero value in society? Another lonley night shitposting on /v/. I'm sure your ancestors are proud.
The Xbox has a better library than PS2, unless one enjoys weeaboo games. But that's a very small percentage of gamers.
Weeaboo games were more commonly played on the PS1. PS2 is was just a glorified dvd player that happened to play jaggy/blurry as fuck games.
Then Sony came up with blu-ray so search engines would bring that up instead of associating Sony with "blurry." True story
why would they list multiplats that are worst on PS2?
it had a VGA adapter, it just didn't support games for some reason. you can use homebrew to run games with it, though.
>>Cheap DVD player
>It was to some but again minus them the player base was still larger.
Are you underage b&? Almost everyone bought a PS2 as a dvd player primarily because dvd players were expensive as fuck AND there were no good games available for YEARS
No good games on PS2 for years? I bought Tekken Tag which was a launch title. That shit was great.
Not to mention you had access to the entire PS1 library. Really convenient and a shame its not as simple as that these days.
>Shadow Hearts 2
My fucking nigger. I'd eat my own balls for a proper third game, or even just a remake of 1 & 2.
>no King of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match Tougeki
Was a hardcore Nintendrone before this system which I finally bought late into its cycle in 2005. Kingdom Hearts was what lured me over and I remember the wait for Kingdom Hearts 2 being unbearable.
I only had Kingdom Hearts for a long time but I bought a lot of PlayStation magazines that came with free demo disks which let me try out games like Psychonauts, Dragon Quest VIII, and Shadow of the Colossus. Eventually I got into Metal Gear big-time and played the first three games over and over and over. That was really what got me into more adult games than what I was used to playing.
My top 5 PS2 games would probably be something like...Shadow of the Colossus, MGS2, Katamari, Silent Hill 3, and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. But there are probably tons of games I'm forgetting.
>or tell us about your buyer's remorse for getting an xbox instead
But I have buyers remorse for buying a PS2. At the time I thought my PS2 was fantastic but in retrospect it's an underpowered piece of shit. The only reason to have one was all the good exclusives on it, but now that they are all mostly ported to PS3, a PS2 is almost useless.
All of my multiplats on PS2 I have since sold and rebought on the Xbox or the PC, both are which are much better. I've compared PC, Xbox and PS2 versions of the same games by putting my screens side by side and PS2 is always gimped shit.
I had a collection of hundreds of PS2 games as a kid, and now in 2016 the only titles the PS2 is still best for are SSX, Socom 2, Haunting Ground, Forbidden Siren, Resident Evil Outbreak, Onimusha 2. That's it, the entire console library that is still exclusive to PS2. Literally every other great or even merely good PS2 title has a better version available on GC/Xbox, a superior PC port or a HD rerelease on PS3. And then again, those few PS2 titles that remain, most can be emulated on a PC better than playing natively on PS2.
>Got a PS2 slim for Christmas
>Excited as fuck about it
>End up just getting a HDD for my PS2 fat a week later and installing FCMB
>PS2 slim doesn't get any love anymore
If only there was a way to connect a SSD to the slim, would be awesome.
Name one good thing about playing gimped games on an underpowered console.
The PS2 being so widespread and getting the most attention from devs was actually a bad thing from the consumers point of view if you care about game quality. Imagine an alternate universe where Insomniac with all their technical wizardry made Ratchet & Clank on the PC? Imagine Naughty Dog really pulling out all the power of the OG Xbox and making an even better Jak & Daxter.
>mfw Resident Evil Outbreak
wonder why Capcom hasn't made a new one with all the online infrastructure these days. Outbreak is the goat and the shit
Yeah I never really cared for Resident Evil because I leaned more towards Silent Hill but Outbreak was the coolest shit. Unfortunately it seems every Resident Evil title except Outbreak are getting the HD treatments.
I loved Outbreak but Capcom released that game a few years early and it really suffered for it. Then during the height of the zombie craze when the online infrastructure was perfect for it, they do nothing. Fucking retards honestly.
Honestly aside from REmake, the Outbreaks where arguably my favorite Resident Evil titles.
RIP in pieces Ratchet and Clank Going Commando and Up Your Arsenal.
Never again will I experience either of you because fuck buying a PS2, PS3, and fuck PCSX2 for having some shitty mapmap issue in hardware mode and running like dogshit in software mode on an i5.
This is a good idea actually. Capcom seem to be changing their focus lately, it's likely they'd consider a HD port or even a PC port goiong by how well REmake sold and RE0 might sell.
All the previous petitions where back years ago when Capcom was trying to be Japanese EA.
>owning a PS2 isn't that important now that all it's good games have been released and can be emulated
>at least ten years later
no shit you fucking idiot, you clearly weren't alive for 6th gen
Konami is so astronomically retarded that the only way to play the real silent hill 3 without pirating it on PC is to buy a fucking PS2.
Has anyone ever dropped the ball so hard as Konami did on the SH HD Collection? It should be really hard to mess up at all but holy hell did they do it.
>you clearly weren't alive for 6th gen
>But I have buyers remorse for buying a PS2. At the time I thought my PS2 was fantastic but in retrospect it's an underpowered piece of shit.
>At the time
I'm not even going to bother actually. You clearly didn't even read my posts in full. Even during 6th gen PS2 only had it's exclusives, multiplats where all better on Xbox/GC or PC.
>If someone doesn't like my underpowered over catered to console they must be an underage
Fucking sonygger shit. Get over your nostaliga. I did. I took years. I loved my PS2. Would shit on Xbots all day in middle school. But ever since I got the money to actually buy all the consoles after getting a job, fucking years ago I realize PS2 is not that great. It's library was the only thing going for it.
>this console is shit and not worth owning (not counting all the great games that are only on it)
if you think exclusives (on any console, not just PS) are bad for the industry then you need to grow up.
Once you mature as an adult, you realize that exclusives actually are bad for the consumer, and exist only to force you to buy shitty proprietary locked down hardware.
I'm actually glad Bloodborne is the only exclusive of this gen worth noting. Pretty much everything is multiplay and comes to PC. I've saved so much money not buying three different companies consoles and only missed out on one game doing so.
I hope the PS4 loses more upcoming exclusives and nothing else comes to it. Consoles need to die and exclusives are enabling little fucks.
They are both good libraries but I don't hate on PS1 as much as PS2 because aside from it's polygon issues with true 3D it was much better than N64 in every other way. N46 had terrible issues with textures due to low memory for ram.
While I don't like the idea of consoles and exclusives I can recognize the good ones at least. PS1 and OG Xbox are pretty good.
Exclusives encourage different game manufacturers to actually make good games and compete you retard. Part of the reason games are so stagnated these days is because every platform is the same.
>Once you mature as an adult, you realize that exclusives actually are bad for the consumer, and exist only to force you to buy shitty proprietary locked down hardware.
I swear, you fags think every single exclusive is some Rise of the Tomb Raider bullshit where someone just paid to keep it from going to other platforms. There's way more to it than that and you're a fucking retard.
Today's modern teens have been accustomed to seeking attention online, and will flat-out lie to get such attention. Coupled with a reddit-mentality of not being truthful and having multiple personalities online, and you get rrtards like these.
Go suck a dick, PS2 had god-tier 1st and 2nd parties for a reason. You don't remember how microsoft fucked with Rare, do you?
My first console was a PS1, cause my cousins upgraded to a PS2. Then I got a gamecube in '04, and played Windwaker, Luigi's Mansion, Mario Sunshine and other greats. I played RE4 there first. I didn't get a PS2 until I was already 18, and completely beat the gamecube in terms of game volume. For every good gamecube game, the PS2 had 5. They didn't look as good but that didn't matter at all. In 2009 I got an xbox and that was alright, but it was worse than the gamecube in the amount of games that were great. I played KOTOR1 and Silent Hill 2, don't remember much else. Never had a 360 cause there was only 2 games I wanted to play on it, and fuck dishing out big money for that. You think the memory card thing was shit? The 360 hdd prices are highway robbery. Halo I had already played on pc.
Except for the 360 and the dreamcast (clunky and games aren't my cup of tea), I've owned all 6th and 7th generation consoles. PS2 is best, followed by gamecube cause great exclusives on par with the PS2 ones (just fewer), and the xbox is third cause it was uncorrupted and had some good exclusives. Dreamcast can suck a dick, borrowed it for a couple days off my neighbor and returned it cause I didn't like it. Makes the xbox look like the PS2.
My rarest PS2 game is Legend of Legaia 2.
Glad I read that spoiler, I was about to go off on you.
I heard Ace Combat works on the latest PCSX2 though, does anyone know which one in particular? Or slightly off topic, does Rogue Leader work on Dolphin?
It's the ps1, son. PSone if you had the white one. I loved Tekken 3 and Megaman Legends, and Crash Bandicoot was the shit.
Holy shit you really are an attention-seeking faggot. Exclusives make people take note of the console, and keep game quality up cause they're used to reel in customers. RE4 was great on the gamecube, and Dragon Quest 8 was a masterpiece. No one buys a console for the multiplats, that's just stupid. It's like saying you're going to marry a chick not because of the tits and ass, but because her arms are better than some other chick's. If you're going to commit for a long period of time to one console, you better be sure it's going to get great exclusives. The gamecube sold solely on it's exclusives, and nintendo had to bring innovation and gameplay in its exclusives just to sell the numbers it did.
Don't you mean console manufacturers?
Game devs can still compete when they are multiplatform and on the same system.
The only good argument for exclusives was taking advantage of the unique hardware. If you are gonna use that, you must also agree that PC has the best and most powerful hardware so why not make everything PC exclusive?
No it's what normal sane people believe. The only people who can't accept these are retarded console fanboys who think exclusives count as a point or a goal against the opposing team.
You want to play Shadow of the Colussus today? Are you gonna play it in shit res at 15fps, or emulate or play the HD re release.
In contrast, try to play Ninja Gaiden Black, or Kingdoms under Fire today. Good luck emulating or getting a better rerelease faggot. The OG Xbox has outlived the PS2 by being un emulatable. So by virtue of time, the PS2 has become almost useless losing it's biggest feature, and the Xbox has retained literally all of it's exclusives and is still the only way to play it's games.
All this wall of text yet
>They didn't look as good but that didn't matter at all
Invalidated you. Have fun playing gimped shit then if all that matters to you is quantity of games over quality.
Framerate and level design are also effected in the PS2's gimping. Try playing Splinter Cell on PS2 where it's unplayable garbage compared to Xbox or PC. Completely redone level design to be way more open over the PS2's linear load screen filled levels. Similar with Max Payne games.
Yet the dreamcast up and died, the gamecube kept at it until the wii. It almost killed sega, son.
You dreamcast fags fap it to a couple games when the gamecube had way more exclusives than it did, and superior hardware. It's the nissin cup noodles to the superior maruchan that was the gamecube. Anyways, the PS2 was the best in terms of sheer game volume. Only PCfags who care about graphics give a shit about inane things like hardware, what matters is GAMES and GAMEPLAY and the PS2 delivered on both accounts. It had shit that appealed to everyone, not just certain people. Fuck, even the vita has survived.
I know your argument makes logical sense and I thought like that too. Exclusives really do make a console worthwhile and you are completely right. But then when you realize consoles themselves are a bad thing, you realize that everything that enables consoles is bad, therefore, exclusives are bad because they enable consoles.
Of course you are right in that exclusives are very very effective at making consoles worth purchasing, but that just makes them that much more bad.
If we as consumers truly want the best quality in games, it's in our best interest that consoles dies out and we all use PC. Ideally not windows either.
Whoah, hey. Just here to keep your memory card nice and comfy while you take your game to your friend's house or out of town with you on a long family trip.
>Your arguments are weak
Thanks, so it should be pretty easy for you to point out my flaws and correct me so I can more educated in the future right anon? So what is this enlightenment I am missing?
You aren't just a mad console faggot angry and using cop out arguments right? I want to be corrected.
>If you are gonna use that, you must also agree that PC has the best and most powerful hardware so why not make everything PC exclusive?
>Graphics makes a good games.
That will condemn every game to be shit. Exclusives exists to use the hardware pro gameplay and pc isn't a videogame platform.
You have a severe trauma with the Sony/Microsoft idea of an exclusive.
>MY SUV GOES REALLY FAST, EVERYONE WHO ISN'T DRIVING AN SUV IS A CANCER TO COMMUTERS!
This is how stupid you sound. You keep implying these people are loyal to a platform and yet your PC dick sucking goes far beyond what anyone in the thread is saying.
I called you out on your bullshit about being a recent PCfag, and your statements only further reflect that. You're just a shitty fucking brat who doesn't remember the limits and how expensive PCs used to be in comparison to console costs. Millennials are painfully easy to spot, it hasn't always been Steam sales and LE PIRACY IN 10 SECONDS xD
This. Gameplay innovation used to be done by 2nd party exclusives that had a smaller budget and could try out different shit. 1st party games were a little bit more restrictive and focused more on established mechanics and graphics. It was rare to see a 1st party game that branched out and did something new.
Exclusives meant the company had to innovate and differentiate from the competition, if you have just one system then stagnation becomes widespread. Besides, gameplay > graphics. Go see a movie if you want pretty pictures, I prefer interactivity in my games. I bet that faggot thinks Gone Homo is a great game, too.
Yes it's a PS2 game in the sense that COD Modern Warfare 2 is technically a PS3 title. It has retroactively lost it's exclusive status and become mulitplatform if it got an HD re-release, because PS3 is a different platform than PS2 even if the same company made it, and half the re-releases were also put on 360.
You console fags throw a little fit when PC gets ports of old PS3 titles like Valkyria Chronicles. It's the same here, a late port. Years later you lost your exclusivity. Emulating is basically a non official port. But emulation is also not perfect so I don't really count it unless it can be done with 100% accuracy.
>Recent PC fag
No I had a PC since the 90's. I am a reluctant idort but PC is my main.
I pointed out before the advances in level design and also framerate and you ignore it. You do know a lot of PS2 multiplats where actually completely different than the same game running on Xbox or PC right? Because PS2 could not even handle the expansive size of some levels in games like fucking Splinter Cell.
>PC isn't a video games platform
The most overrated console on the board is the 3DS. The GameCube is treated like Nintendo Jesus but that's okay because it is.
>Metroid Prime 1&2
>Rogue Squadron II
>Paper Mario TTYD
I don't even know why I come on this board anymore, nobody can have a proper discussion without it turning into Nintendo vs. Sony vs. Microsoft
I didn't deny the inferiority of ps2's hardware. I'm talking about gameplay.
Shitty as it was in hardware ps2 had great gameplays.
>>PC isn't a video games platform
>Implying a platform that can run games it is designed for that purpose.
You're retarded man. Don't waste bait.
Context matters. Consoles are judged in the time period they're relevant in. Its completely asinine to insinuate the NES has no games just because your cell phone can emulate the entire library, or because its games got included in a multitude of rereleases. Final Fantasy I being on every system and their grandma does not somehow magically invalidate FFI on NES. You are trying to do some sort of cheerleader PC warrior thing right now and its funny.
As for Splinter Cell, yeah, that was a completely different game on PS2. XBOX was much better and the definitive version of the game. But I would much rather have a PS2 any day of the week for its 3rd party Japanese support.
I call them sonyggers and console fags because I don't like people who support those companies and systems.
Lost exclusivity has somehow been made into a buzzword of late but I didn't mean to use it in a buzzword term.
I never said I was above console wars. Arguing, complaining and comparing are the gears of capitalism.
>people who don't have any loyalty to a platform from 15 years ago and just want to talk about games
>Can we talk about this magnificent console?
>tell us about your buyer's remorse for getting an xbox instead
If you don't want a debate thread don't start with a shitpost bait OP.
Never really had a PS2, but I do miss memory cards. Remember when the idea of taking your save with you was so important that entire games and peripherals were made with the expectation that you were going to do so?
I feel that the always online and little if any couch co-op was foreshadowed by the switch from memory cards to hard drives. Unless you can copy saves to flash drives now, in which case this entire post meant nothing.
You can copy saves to flash drives but your post is still somewhat true. Hard drives meant devs didn't have to finish games on time anymore. They can just send out patches and DLC, like PC fats were happily shoveling into their mouths for years.
If you are talking about gameplay, then how is Xbox/GC/PC not either equel or superior to PS2?
The only issue that could be in favor of PS2 in terms of gameplay is controller preference issues. PS2 had lots of framerate issues in many games, I tried playing Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood on my PS2, what a fucking nightmare that was. Should not have even tried to release that blurry slideshow on PS2 honestly, scammed out of my money. If you played it on Xbox or PC the gameplay would be improved because of better framerate. In any other case where there was framerate parity, it would be the same, except the PC/Xbox would have the added bonus of better lighting, textures etc on top of it, so how are they not better?
>Context matters. Consoles are judged in the time period they're relevant in.
Did you not read my first post in this thread? See >>323387707
>At the time I thought my PS2 was fantastic
So from 2000-2006, I though the PS2 was fantastic and best console ever released. I loved the thing. I've mentioned that in the thread before multiple times.
>but in retrospect it's an underpowered piece of shit
From 2007 onwards my opinion decreased to the point I started to dislike it, especially after buying and trying out an Xbox and GC to finally play the exclusives I'd missed out on, and realizing I should have got an Xbox earlier and played all my PS2 multiplats on Xbox.
How are you not understanding this is a retrospective opinion in hindsight.
>If you are talking about gameplay, then how is Xbox/GC/PC not either equel or superior to PS2?
Because creativity can't be rationalized. That's how you do good games, everything else is secondary.
It will be become pc vs consoles if nobody puts them in their place.
I had a ps2. It was alright. Played games like gran turismo and need for speed underground 2 on it which I enjoyed but the xbox was and still is a superior console to me. Playing halo 2 and midtown madness on the early xbox live was the shit
