360 if you dont need the dpad much
DS3 if you need the dpad a lot and dont mind when games prompt for 360 buttons
KB + M for shooters, strategies, sims, etcetc

people can sub the 360 for X1 or DS3 for DS4 if they feel the need but the extremely low prices of the 360 controller + DS3 makes them unbeatable

I just yesterday bought a new 360 controller and the d-pad was fucked up. I took it back to the store and had it replaced, but it has the exact same shitty d-pad problem.

I did it and the D-pad works perfectly now. Best 360 d-pad ive ever felt/used.

I guess since I've had PCs and consoles all my life and switch between controllers and K+M depending on the games, I'm fine with either, and do see places where controllers would be better.

Similar to you, I've heard console-only people who move to PC tell me how awkward K+M is the first time. Maybe it was just me being younger and open to new things when I got into PC gaming, but K+M has always felt pretty intuitive.

I just use a 2 dollar chinese dualshock clone.

I don't personally like it all that much, but probably a wired 360 pad.

Shit gets pretty flimsy after some use, the dpad is fucking terrible and the buttons are not button mash friendly, but at least it works right out of the box with most games on steam and it works pretty well in gamecube and dreamcast emulation, mainly because the controller has similar shape.

That's normal for 360 pads. Yes, the dpads on those things really are THAT shitty. 60 fucking bucks for wireless.

Dual Shock 3 isn't worth 60 bucks either but at least they work really well after hundreds of hour of playing. If you don't drop them on the floor that is. They can break really fast that way.

Using the video I linked, I did manage to 'fix' the D-pad (inserting the cardboard things). I think the D-pad is perfectly fine when it actually works properly, I like it.

What the fuck was I thinking. I'm glad I forced myself to use WASD later on, but it was still relatively recent. I still remember playing BF3 at launch with arrow keys.

I seriously love the xboner controller. Its the comfiest of all, and it is just plug and play. Also, most PC games already have the controller mapping already set for xbone controller.

DS4

I use DS4 on PC more than I use the actual console.

It's got a nice Dpad and DS4Windows has lots of options like using the gyro or touchpad to control the mouse for better couch control.
