I think you should just accept that you've missed out on HL2. The graphics aren't the only aspect of the game which is dated, the gameplay suffers too. I loved HL2, still do, but that's because I played it when it was still relevant and somewhat impressive. Going into it now, when it has nothing new to offer, is just silly. It's like how teenagers today try playing Morrowind because they enjoyed Skyrim so much. They just can't enjoy it because it all feels so clunky and unintuitive to them. Then the people who did play the game when it was relevant have to put up with all the shitposting from those teens.

Do yourself and HL2 fans a favour and just skip this game.

Last I checked there really weren't any worthwhile mods for HL2. Vanilla isn't bad in my opinion, I think it still looks pretty good. The faces are still better than some modern games.
