Fun fact for anyone who doesn't know: there's a blood-red body of water called Lake Natron in Tanzania that has a pH value of 10.5, which reaches temperatures of over 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Extreme evaporation left behind natron (or sodium carbonate decahydrate) and trona, (or sodium sesquicarbonate dihydrate) making the lake higly caustic. I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re refering to as Ocula Ring, is in fact, Oculus Rift, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, Oculus Rift plus Consumer Version 1. Consumer Version 1 is not an HMD unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning HMD system made useful by the HMD hardware, API and vital system components comprising a full HMD experience as defined by Facebook.
Many VR headset users run a modified version of the VR API system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of HMD which is widely used today is often called “Oculus”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the VR system, developed by the Facebook Project.
There really is an HMD, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Oculus is the headset: the part in the system that transports the machine’s output to the human eyes. The headset is an essential part of a VR experience, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete VR setup. Oculus is normally used in combination with the Oculus API: the whole system is basically Oculus with OculusSDK added, or Oculus Rift plus Consumer Version 1. All the so-called “VR” distributions are really distributions of Facebook's creation.
