I don't think they're particularly unpopular. That said I think they're shit. I love the classic series, and I really like the original Mega Man X (X2 wasn't too bad), but the Zero games irritate the fuck out of me. I dislike the art direction, I think the story is needlessly emphasized, the limited field of view combined with the level design is grating. I tried. I really wanted to like them.

While I agree with this I think the combat, music and difficulty make up for it. Give it another chance anon, I didn't like them at first either. Mostly due to the fact that I didn't really like Zero as a character.
>>323233268 >Fourth is the retard filter Retard filter?
>>323229427 I like them. Though I personally have the most trouble going back to them as opposed to other series, because I tend to get into the ranking system too hard and the grind to get a perfect (or near-perfect) run of a given stage burns me off much faster than just playing. They are very high quality games, but I find them the most difficult to just "pick up and play".
>>323235535 >Phoenix magneion >hard He was tough but not really too bad I remember, I also used weaknesses like a scrub so that's probably just me. He was more annoying than difficult in my opinion with his stupid gimmick where you have to wait to attack him.
>>323229427 The games are really fuck but the fucking problem with them is you have to get an S if you want the bosses power, which involves you having to repeat a stage a million times till you can speed run it without getting hurt. If you actually get the boss moves they are fun, and the game itself feels very similar to megamanX in movement.
>>323237557 >Is it this artist? I believe so, his art style isn't always "kawaii". Pic related is and >>323236993 are from his blog, going by the pen name Peach Class. I guess he's using his real name on pixiv.
>>323236532 >>Get shivved by surprise boss >>Manage to win >>Jump >>Jump >>Destroy Bomb >>Can't fully see moving platforms below >>Slip while trying to get vision >>Die >>Restart >>Can find the last one >>Grand Canyon warehouse in goes up in smithereens Fixed that for me.
1 had some good ideas as well as some poor ones that slightly ruined the experience. 2 removed some of the poor ideas and introduced some more good ones. 3 perfected the series. 4 had some grindy bullshit and was pretty much made just to finish off the series for good.
I loved how the buster and sabre could be used seamlessly with one another. Are there any other games like it?
>>323237557 >This gay kawaii ugu anime bullshit is too wrong for something like Megaman Please bitch, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the art direction the MMZ games took and had the best boss designs out of any Megaman game. I like the designer of the X series designs but come on, don't kid yourself >>323242576 It's one of the best, loud X fans just hate to acknowledge it because Zero lost his boobs
Let me see if I can sum up Megaman's plot, since Zero seemed to play a big role in it.
>Classic Wily wants to rule the world. Megaman says no. >X Everyone died, except for like a few people. Everyone goes Coldsteel the Edgehog and X has to kill them and their leader Sigma >Zero X finally stops Sigma with the cyber elves, dies in the process except he doesn't, Zero is revived, kills Weil, saved the world. Ciel creates refractor technology. >ZX I'M NOT ZERO! I'M MY ORIGINAL CHARACTER, BLERO >Legends Someone left the toilet running and flooded the whole world. The mary sues from ZX make the reaverbtos and master system to fix everything. Trigger goes rogue trying to stop the systemic carbon genocide.
>>323244690 >Classic Pretty much >X They went against their programming and were dubbed Mavericks. X does die. >Zero Energy Crisis forces some to rebel or become a victim of genocide. Zero is revived and saves everyone, then weil appears, then both die. >ZX Pretty Much with the exception of biometals being bretty gud shit. >Legends ...
>>323244292 Nice idea, the moveset of the Zero games being used in a Metroidvania seems great on paper. Although the map system was awful and the world was poorly designed so you had a shit ton of unnecessary backtracking. It seems that people who make Metroidvanias seem to think that backtracking is what defines the genre, when it isn't (which is a shame).
>>323244690 The one thing I've learned from playing/watching any form of media that took over a decade to develop is that usually one series spawns off of a direction they wanted to take characters that they couldn't before. For example in the original Gundam they had two siblings, a brother & sister, that were the heirs of a fallen peaceful dictatorships that wanted to pursue peaceful situations instead of waging giant robot wars. The Brother ends up waging war as an ace pilot and the Sister ends up pushing for peace. However the sister's VA had better shit to do and never returned to her role in any sequels, and since you practically own your character once you VA for it in Japan the relationship was ruined. Then Gundam Wing happened and thats a series that prominently features a Brother & a Sister of a fallen peaceful dictatorship and the Brother is an ace pilot and the sister sues for peace. Zechs has a lot of Char's features and even pursues the same crazy plan of dropping an asteroid onto earth.
So in Megaman Zero I can only imagine that Infaune's original vision for the MMX series that Capcom would never allow was that Zero developed away from his Wily origins, just like he does in MMZ, and that X becomes corrupted or infected with the Zero Virus and Zero regrettably has to fulfill his original purpose of killing X. Then we see his Zero > Omega plotline unfold in MMZ3, the idea then being that Zero is stripped of everything besides his primary weapon and has to overcome himself at the height of his most evil/most powerful. Essentially these things made up the plot of X5, which appears to be the actual intended finale to the X series before they forced X6 and slapped enough shit together to make an X7 and X8.
>>323246601 To be fair, the original story of the first Zero actually had real X be the villian and not copy X. X was supposed to have come to the idea that the only way for there to be peace was under a totalitarian rule and zero would have to kill him.
>>323248307 Fighting the original armor would've probably highlighted the point a lot better.
If anything I'm surprised that between 4 games that Zero never regained some semblance of his old form. X got new armors, why not a downgraded Zero? Didn't Rock have some armor upgrade in one of the games?
>>323248483 I was okay with Copy X & Real X being a vagrant program. There was a non-canon character called Irregular X who was an X from another dimension that becomes evil, it's just X but evil so who cares that it isn't the Real one.
>>323246601 >>323247238 It's worth noting that Inafune never wrote much for the series and wasn't even part of the team that did X5, X5 and X6 were by a new team trying to start their own plotline based on hints of Wily's involvement as Serges in X2 before being kicked off for another team for X7. Personally I think those games had potential but that was the point where Capcom was forcing out 4-5 or more Mega Man games a year so I doubt they were even given much development time. That's probably what led to X6's quality more than anything else. Inti Creates never had any connection to any of the other Mega Man development teams, they were just really good at adapting to other happenings in the series, they're really big fans and it shows. They decided not to make X the villain and changed a lot of the story of Zero 1 in the last month of development just because they didn't like it, they were allowed to go wild with the Zero series and felt like that was the point where they went too far even though Inafune was fine with whatever they did.
Really I think the whole X series is kind of a mess with all the people that had been involved in it and Capcom's general business practices, Inti Creates handled the franchise better than anyone. If we ever get anymore Mega Man games I'd love to see them working on the series again.
>>323250115 I doubt he even does as much as they make it seem for MN9, there's probably a reason no one ever talks about the actual director of the game. His biggest role in Mega Man is design lead for EXE Operate Shooting Star which is known for being a terrible remake. He had some game design position for Star Force 2 and 3 as well but it wasn't anything as big. Inafune was mostly an artist at first and supervised other teams later and that's as far as his involvement really goes, he really doesn't deserve any of the credit for the games people think he's part of.
