What you do with a rapier when you're up against a dude with a breastplate is you use the fact that it's a light and slender blade to your advantage and try to steer it past his defences into his groin or his armpit or something.

What you definitely want to avoid is hitting the breastplate because it's much thicker and shaped to absorb blows.
