Nope. I play Rift to scratch that mmo itch from time to time, but no where near as much as i used to play mmo's back in 2007-10.

Any game can be good if played with friends. Playing an MMO alone is like going to a theme park alone. Some rides might be fun, but you'll look around at everyone else having fun together and wish you could be included. MMOs these days are theme parks. It's hard to say whether one is better than another, and everyone will defend their MMO of choice, but the fact is they're all pretty much copying WoW's successful formula.

PvP is more active thanks to leagues, there's more to do in PvE now than there ever was and the current raid is a good framework for end game PvE going forward. The only "dead" game mode is WvW and they're working on a major overhaul for that this year.

Plus no bullshit monthly fees. The only reason to hate GW2 is if you're a gear addled MMO player that needs a new tier of gear every few months to replace the gear they just grinded for ad infinitum.

GW2 is a pretty good contender right now for being amongst the top mmo's, not that it has much competition.

it's alright. has several glaring issues but does a lot right too.

the main issue currently being that the end game raid isnt very easy. whether or not you like that is up to you

the next series will be slightly scaled back and it comes out in February. the game and combat are VERY slow till about level 40. honestly i hate to say it, but it really doesnt pick up till then on any class.

give it a month sub, get to 50 and you might like it. balmung is the unofficial RP server if youre into that, race barely matters unless youre a meta Black Mage.

once youre at 50 decide if you wanna keep going. if you do, then buy Heavensward and get to 60. then you can try the savage tier of raids. people like to hate on them cause theyre pretty punishing but idk i like them. i hope you enjoy.

The crafting/gathering classes in FFXIV can be lucrative, but you have to pretty much get every one to 50 before you start raking in the big gil, and choose your specialist crafting classes carefully. You can sell you services melding materia or crafting items 1 on 1 if they give you the materials.

It's definitely possible though, lots of people go that route and find it pretty enjoyable.

The only caveat is that I believe in order to progress through the story and "unlock" more areas, you need to get at least 1 combat class "DoW/DoM" to level 50 pre-expansion, 60 post-expansion.

There's nothing a dd can do against a dragonhunter in an on point fight unless the dragonhunter splurgs out and lets you sit on top of him.

A condi reaper will kill a dd in less than a minute unless you run diamond skin. A dd using diamond skin has such negligible damage to a point where even a reaper can disengage.

A DD may survive against a power scrapper but the scrapper will dominate the fight entirely,

DD eles lose to shadow arts thieves and daredevils.

A condi mallyx Revenant also completely wrecks a dd.

A condi mesmer will beat a dd.

If you're talking about a build that counters everything you should be looking into the classes that can disengage well. Fleeing a fight is better than dying from a 1v1.

Perplexity condi mesmers are still probably the strongest 1v1er around right now. They can't do anything against diamond skin but they can disengage. They may lose to a shadow arts thief in a prolonged fight.

A shadow arts thief or even a daredevil dp can disengage from any 1v1 encounter which allows them to pop back into the 1v1 whenever they feel like it. In a straight up fight they are weak but in a wvw scenario their ability to engage and disengage on will gives them a chance against any class in 1v1.

Same idea with a power scrapper who can stealth disengage with gyro.

No.

TERA has fun and unique combat though if you haven't tried it already. Kept me busy for a year or two until all of the glaring flaws and mismanagement by the developers started to rise up to the surface and just bug the shit out of me every time i logged in. You should know beforehand that the game is in a significantly worse spot than it was 3 years ago and PvP is almost an unplayable clusterfuck now with the addition of new classes and such, but the combat can still be extremely satisfying. The game is not worth playing in the long run but i think everyone should at least try it out because it is unique.

Alternatively, EVE Online is still going strong and is by far the best Sandbox MMO of all time. Ignore anyone that says it's a spreadsheet simulator, there's more to the game than numbers and if you find your way into a good and active corp you can have loads of fun and experiences that no other MMO on the market will bring you. EVE is probably the only MMO i would say is worth playing in 2016 but only if you are fully dedicated to it and are very social or have several friends that also play it because you will not have any fun playing EVE alone. Rooks & Kings have a few videos up on youtube that can sort of give you an idea exactly how EVE online is at it's best, though keep in mind that they're not the norm and half of the players of EVE will never do shit that is as cool as the stuff they've done.

I think a big thing about MMOs is that its time to stop looking at them as nothing but huge time sinks intended to be played for months on end, even years.

We all know that the only reason we ever played games like SWG and WoW for so long back then was not only were we young and easily swayed, but chances are most of us had 'friends' we would play for most of the time.

I have a group of friends, we hop from game to game for launch titles and expansions, we rarely stick around for one for over 6 months.
