Funny you should bring Katawa Shoujo in as an example, considering as a VN it's pretty damn low-tier, and its popularity is not reflected on its quality. There's a ton of VNs that kick KS to the curb in terms of substance.
It got popular because of the /a/ hype, and it stayed popular because it made a name for itself through that hype. That and the autistic general over at /vg/.

And games can definitely have plenty of substance despite having lewd. What I'm trying to say here is you can have both, and I prefer games that do both well.

Even if I'm not really into that kind of game (straight up action games don't interest me very much), I can see why people like it for the gameplay. But adding the lewd seemed like a shallow form of advertising for such a game. Lewd doesn't make the games any better, it's just there. And no doubt they added it not only because the director wanted it for personal reasons, but because it's a marketing device. It's added because it can often attract a certain group of people to the game that might like the game to begin with, but adding that touch of sex appeal could drive them over the edge and make them much more likely to buy it.
