>Never played or was interested in an Xcom game until Xcom 2 made /v/ shill threads daily
Now just picked this up and btw don't know anything AT ALL, just that it's turn based. What am I in for?
Overwatch spam, 100% miss rate on 99% hit chance shots, and Thin Men ruining everything.
Flawed game with rather boring base building and research, but still a solid 7/10. It's pretty fun.
Oh you're gonna rage quit buddy. You'll make it through a couple missions with some "Well that was some bullshit, but I'm gonna do it" but you're gonna stop playing iron man and start save scumming at some point between rage quits.
also, unlike most AAA games, Xcom EU and EW have lost states. If you' fuck up your playthrough too much, you'll literally lose - and if you're doing ironman, that means game over, start again from the beginning.
All I'm saying is, don't hesitate to start new games if you fuck up beyond repair - because it can happen, and the game will not be nice if you fuck up too much
See, idiocy like >>323105308
is why people think "99% shots always miss".
XCOM runs on a seed, so no amount of reloading is going to make that shot hit so they keep reloading and screaming and raging because they are too stupid to know that savescumming isn't possible unless you have the 2nd wave option activated that generates a new seed with each successive load of the game.
I didn't say 99% always miss, but they're gonna miss when you got a fuckin 4 man squad and are flanked.
I'm going to beat ironman classic one of these fuckin days.
Quite honestly this anons pic is all you need to know when you start to play. Have fun bro.
Why the fuck do people make threads like these?
>I just bought X, what should I expect
nigger just fucking play it, you paid for it and you're willing to take the risk that we say it's shit?
>going to get food with parent since my car is in the shop
>"hey anon, want to go to gamestop while we wait for our food?"
>ask why, nothing comes out until later in the year, and still have a decent backlog
>"just to look around anon"
>do you want anything?
>"no anon, just to look around, maybe buy a book"
>she starts browsing
>"hey anon we have the ps3 right?"
>"im actually thinking of getting a game"
now understand, the only games that she has actually played are the point and click mystery games, FFX, and she guided my brother with the strategy guide for Lost Odyssey and FFVII, Pharaoh and AoM
>what kind of game you looking for?
>something like Final fantasy
>says this while looking at skyrim
>tell her the difference between Skyrim and FF
>i know anon, im just remembering the little bit i played of this, never finished it
>grab oblivion GOTY for her
>tell her it is like skyrim, but she probably wont like it and drop it in the first 5 hours
>she says she is going to try it
>okay, i can always play it on the couch when she is done
>suddenly get brilliant idea
>grab XCOM:EU off the shelf
>explain it to her, tell it is a turn based squad tactical game
>kind of play it off, realize that she wouldn't like it
>no anon, i'll give it a try, sound fun
>mfw i got my mom to play Oblivion and XCOM
>quietly munch on spam musubi and honey walnut shrimp in contemplation
did i goof?
Hell it makes even less sense when you realize that this game has a general on /vg/.
...Granted that's probably not the best idea since they would just tell him to install Long War immediately.
bitch, where do you live where a 14 year old can drive and own a car
>install Long War immediately
They're assholes then. Even if you rush it EU without Enemy Within it is really drug out once you got a squad and a couple backup veterans. It's just that when you hit the end of researching weapons and armor it comes down to the units class and skill path to make any difference in the play and if you're winning you just need to rush priority and finish it ASAP.
Like at the start you rush sats and are trying to get some good fighters together, which means jack all until you have a psi lab just like the original no matter how much effort you put into those guys which kinda sucks, but by the time you got a psi lab there is no point in training up fresh psi soldiers you might as well rush ending.
about a game they've never played but could play quite literally right this second?
Long War DOES make the game a lot better, I just wish the improvements it did were separate from the relatively questionable balance choices for buffing the aliens.
I don't mind the aliens being buffed but maybe as much as it was is a bit much.
Interestingly enough Beagle's changes to Long War are pretty good and simultaneously make the game more balanced while somewhat more difficult.
I feel like playing a turn based strat game.
Either this, Massive Chalice, Fire Emblem, or that anime game everyone always gushes over that came to the PC and it's name I can't remember at this very moment well I am typing this.
I guess it sort of depends on if you want a badass squad a soldiers then for the game length. Like if somehow you got lucky and are managing to hold off the invasion I know I want psi soldiers just for shits and giggles but if I'm already that dominant I might as well try and end it because the fights are pretty much the same. It's not bad but wanting to drag out more fights is just masochistic. Kill the enemy take control.
So THATS the fucking game people keep thinking my toon names are references to!
Never heard of it, came up with the names from the unborn Val'kyr.
Suck mah dick
I tried "The Long War" mod for the first time ever today.
Turns out it completely removes the story element/progression and just casually throws you into your first mission, a random map where you're up against 9+ greys that automatically hit on anything higher than 15% chance (and do 2-3 bars of damage) while your soldiers can't hit on anything lower than 90%. And that's on NORMAL difficulty.
And that shit is someone's idea of fun, Jesus Christ.
I like a lot of the things it added, but it changed way too much for no reason.
The new grenade system is fucking terrible too, and the pacing is completely fucked. I was so hyped for it too.
Yeah I know the "Val'kyr", they're Blizzard's deus ex machina "Valkyries but not really" plot devices, because apostrophes makes everything sound cooler, so it's got to be some wow shit slang.
Don't start on Classic.
Stick with Normal until you're comfortable. Classic and Impossible are extremely RNG based, losing is not possible, but very likely.
I've played 50+ hours and never beaten Classic. I just can't be bothered.
I could maybe deal with the shitty unforgiving combat despite taking away everything that was satisfying about it, but I liked the story and having something of a clear goal in the distance and a little bit of coherency to the missions. Worse yet, nexus reviews unanimously mentioned that those kinds of pointless, random-ass suicide missions against aliens makes up something like 90% of the added length which makes the war long.
So if you do nine missions, chances are eight of those will just be flanking education 101 while hoping RNG overwatch bullshit doesn't instakill your squad while moving.
He shouldn't though.
First month wait until first abductions, take the engineer bonus for completion lowers sat cost by 40$ and you only need one before first council report, second month if you took the 4 engineers and put up a sat and got a +1 engineer council bonus you have enough for a second uplink and need 3 sats and a uplinkI tried making a thread here the other day about how game changing it would be to take scientists instead but engineers just seem like the most solid choice.
Once the panic at the disco starts there's no way back. Restart and lower the difficulty, read some strats if you want.
God fucking help you and your anus once the chrysalis comes.
Mordheim has awful RNG but it feels less like a giant "fuck you" because soldiers mostly survive. I just want them to get positive traits from surviving instead of purely negative.
Like say some guy has gotten near-killed three games in a row. Surely he should get something like tougher skin, better evade chance or SOMETHING, instead of being a crippled mess you have to fire.
Oh, you haven't even gotten to those yet?
Wait until you get to those. It'll happen soon.
That'll be the moment you realize how fucked anything above Normal is.
Seriously, just stick with it until you get to those.
Man those things are not nearly as bad as UFO defense but they totally fucked my game one time on classic ironman. I haven't had that map on the computer just PS3 it was this one solid building with 2 levels and there was an alley on all 4 sides of the building. This chryssalid it just triggers and is in fog jumps up to the second level runs across there to not trigger any overwatches fucker drops down and kills my best guy and just starts to run up eating bullets and dodging shots killing the rest of my squad. I was so fucking pissed it was the first terror mission.
Don't let the flashiness fool you - it's a strategy game. You play it like any other turn-based strategy game.. with patience and thinking ahead several moves.
Normal difficulty is pretty easy. Classic will push your shit in and Impossible is pretty much what it says.
I'd recommend Normal/Ironman on your first run.
Imagine the worse possible thing you can think of. Multiply it by ten, then coat it in armor that shrugs off anything but the highest tier experimental weaponry and give it infectious spit that turns anyone it kills into an additional enemy.
Oh yeah, and a single hit from it will kill any xcom operative.
>Always use my low rank assaults to trigger the enemy spawns/cutscenes,
>Do this as the last move after i set everyone to overwatch
>he triggers THREE fucking packs of chrysalis, thats fucking 9 of them
>they get 3 free moves because fuck balance
>all my overwatches miss
>Now got 6 of those fuckers in my face and 3 getting ready to rape that poor assault
Reloaded that shit instantly, fuck I'm glad they got rid of that free move they would always get in the sequel. I could stomach the rng but that shit was always horseshit.
I already felt horrible when losing half my squad agains the thin men, and then again when ambushed by the flying men
With Long War they also get a free attack after their free move
Anyone who can't beat normal iron man on their first attempt is literally retarded. classic and impossible will be difficult unless you know certain strategies that help in the geoscape portion of the game (like early satellite spam)
bullshit let's see a stream of you playing I'll totally watch. I've watched youtube videos that were suppose to be classic ironman and they were landing 35% chance to hit shots.
It means you're shit out of luck until you flank unless it's the last enemy and you have someone on over watch. If it's psi-linked the hit bonus is going to push your shit in.
alright recently started playing blind. hints in loading told me satellites were the key to success
Every time I get to the skeleton get assault the alien base mission i put it off
>i need to get some better units first
>maybe i should get plasma before attacking an alien base
>scopes seem pretty good, lets make those
Every fucking game I put it off and then the natural progression of aliens getting harder makes me quit my run after i lose every fucking unit in 3 missions straight
my general strategy is
> rush advanced scopes while getting satellites whenever possible.
>Finish 2 satellite uplinks after first council meeting
>have africa and asia defended 100% by satellites by third counsel meeting, lasers and advanced scopes through foundary that i get after alien containment.
I still have no idea what i'm gonna find at that alien base
