i am huge yakuza fan and i have played all of them except psp titles. I do consider them to be great underrated series but Y5 is really the worst title in the franchise.
Gameplay is pushed in wrong directions with 1 vs 29 guys like its a musou game. Fights drag unnececery and pace is broken completely.
Saejimas and Akiyamas chapter are forced in and Harukas part is too slow and boring with too little variety.
Story is retarded beyond redemption its not even possible to defend it and ending is just atrocity.
Main twist lacks suspense but last boss fight was great.

THankfuly they got back on the track after this game with solid Ishin and great Zero.

I still don't understand why he had to go to jail to be a liutenant. They both recognize Tojo is weak as fuck. And he still does it? And for assault? It's a brawler, people are beating each other to to brink of death casually. I tried to convince myself he was doing it because for him, prison felt more like his home than Tojo, because it would give him some depth, but it's prerty clear it's not the case at all.

The writers just decided to put him on prison again, and then have him break out again, just because it's his "thing" now, that's what Saejima is, just like Akyama is the Sky Finance guy, even though he lost a lot of money in 4.

The prison thing doesn't even change anything gameplay wise, it just puts some cops in some corners, you can walk around then.

Akiyama has access to 2 Zero Jewels. 1 from the Kushikatsu Daruma sidequest and 1 from the Sotenbori lockers(forgot which one).

After you get those things empty your inventory and go to Ryugujo/Purgatory and buy chips. Go play roulette, use the Zero Jewel and place the maximum bet(1000 chips) in between 0 and 00. When you're done, exchange your points for Gold and Platinum Plates you can sell at the pawnshop

I still don't understand what's the deal with real life yakuza. Why doesn't the police go after them if they're so easy to identify (tattoos, dress code, pins, etc)? How can they run racketing and all that shit in broad daylight? Also, something I don't get about these games, how they try to make individuals like Kazuma who are basically 100% moralfag good guys also want to care for a criminal organization this much. If they were anti-heroes like in games such as GTA or MAfia it would make more sense, but having Kazuma care so fucking much about the Tojo clan is retarded.

Bowling. Once you get the trick to get 100% strike, and you get a full game with nothing but strikes, they give you a statue that IIRC can be sold for 2mil yen. I got like 3 of those in Yakuza 4 and then was set for the entire game. I haven't played bowling a lot in Y5 but I'm pretty sure the same trick to get 100% strike works in this one as well, and so does the trick to get bullseyes in darts (too bad the highest AI cheats and gets 3 triple20s nearly every turn).

I've read on Wikipedia that they still deal with racketing, smuggling, and on top of that, they deal with drug and weapon dealing, prostitution rings and human trafficking. In Y5 there's a sidestory with Kiryu (IIRC) where you help a slut victim of human trafficking by Yakuza, which is ironic since the same kind of thing most likely goes on in the Tojo Clan.

This is probably East/West values dissonance. In East Asian countries, honoring those who came before you is very serious, in both business and family. Kiryu preaches to rowdy upstarts about honoring their elders and superiors all the time. Not only did the Tojo help mold Kiryu into who he is today, by not helping the Tojo, Kiryu would be doing a disservice to people like Kazama, Sera, etc. by not helping.

Finally got 15 million yen, and finished everything but half the food, half the mini games, and half of the arena and I'm burned out, this game has far too much grinding dealing with the 100% this time around. I found haruka's part to be extremely underwhelming. The rhythm game during the singing parts is so easy and boring, they could have ripped off the Project Diva system and it would have been way better and more fun (and why couldn't they? There are even hatsune miku figures into this game since it's all Sega stuff). The dancing minigame is just trash though, not only the music is just embarassing but the dance animations are dogshit and don't even match the rhythm at all if you pay attention. There are what, a grand total of 4 songs? They couldn't mocap 4 dance animations for the dance battle minigame?

Fuck, I was so hype for playing as Haruka but the whole thing got old after about 20 minutes.

I'm currently playing through Ishin and I had two posts in yesterday's thread about the grindy nature of the game, but I'll repost them since they are relevant to what you are asking.
It seems like they've been making the games grindier as they go on.

In Ishin you have four different fighting styles and they all get capped out at 25. To keep the styles leveling to 50 you have to learn every ability in that style, do every revelation in that style and train with all the masters. Only then can you keep leveling them to 50.

You also don't get exp for doing substories and leveling classes seems to be based on the numbers of times you hit an opponent with that style. So you end up doing the 100 man battle arena fights over and over if you want to level them all.

I hear 0 is just as grindy but in a different way.
I'm hoping 6 cuts back on the grind and just goes back to maxing you out at 20 from doing substories and some minor side content.

That's not even all of it. In Ishin you also have to keep your weapons and armor upgraded because the opponents in the side modes are really fucking strong. We're talking getting taken out in a single combo strong if your equipment isn't good enough.

So you end up running the battle dungeon which is a mode were you go down multiple floors down these really samey enemy infested dungeons. The further you go down, the stronger the opponents get, but the better the rare materials get. Eventually your standard grunt starts getting as many health bars as a boss.

There is also an rng element to the drops as running the same dungeon wont guarantee a good drop and some weapons require multiple amounts of that certain material.

Needless to say, it's all really grindy and isn't always fun. I mean I still really like Ishin, but I'm hoping the series doesn't start going in this direction.

Yes playing the older games would be helpful.

1 and 2 were released for PS2 you can emulate them if you want to. 1's pretty rough around the edges. 2 however is a step up in most ways and is one of the better games in the series. 3 is decent overall. 4 started the whole many playable characters thing all whom have some style of their own. 5 is the most recent one(Well overseas of course) and still has the different playable characters trend.

If you just wanna jump the series right away play 4 as it has cliff notes retellings of the first three games. There are some spin off games though only one came over here(Dead Souls) and you don't really have to play it.

Well like I said, you don't gain exp from substories anymore. What determines your styles leveling up seems to be how many times you hit an opponent with that style, so it basically levels up the more you use it.

Really not a fan of the arena in Ishin. At the beginning of the game it's stupidly hard with enemies stunlocking you and taking you out in a single combo. But it becomes pathetically easy once you make good equipment with good symbols (symbols are things you can insert in your equipment that give you certain abilities like health regeneration or more melee damage). Once you make a good gun, you can spam Komaki to death by just mashing square on him. Even if you use your sword, it eventually becomes powerful enough that you can take anyone out in a few counters.

I feel Ishin has way more rpg elements that the other rgg games and it often feels like the solution to a hard fight is "grind more", instead of "git gud".

Well it's not that bad, all the abilities on the grid only cost one point so you get one new ability per level up. It only starts to feel really grindy if you want to reach max power in one ability by getting to 50, though this isn't required to finish the story.

I definitely have problems with some of the design decisions in Ishin. I really feel it's one of their more experimental games after Dead Souls. I can see the game dividing some people in the fanbase if it ever gets localized.

With that said, I still really enjoyed the game for its setting, music, cool action scenes and boss fights and the smooth 60 fps combat. Even the grind eventually became almost fun to me and I enjoyed becoming an unstoppable god like being that can take out bosses on ex hard in seconds.

Well one final thing I would like to say on Ishin so as to not give the wrong impression, is that the grind only becomes apparent if you delve into the combat heavy side content (mainly arena, battle dungeon and Amon) or if you want to 100% the game.

Finishing just the stories and substories requires no grinding since it's just as easy as any other Yakuza game and you can still carry an ass load of healing items.

If you really enjoy samurai themed games and you don't mind using that guide on khhsubs, then I definitely recommend importing it since I doubt this will ever get localized.
