Here's a time stamp because I didn't do that before, but yea I got the physical version cause it would've been better and authentic to do, also got MGS2
>>
Boktai really is something special. The solar power gimmick might get old, though. If you have a DS, Lunar Knights is a good sequel with a really good soundtrack. Years later, I still find myself humming songs from that game.

Yea I remember hearing about that game way back, but I forgot all about it until now. I might get it after playing this.

The solar gimmick is utilized in a lot of very cool ways but in the end it's still an annoyance. Still, the game is excellent and I highly recommend you play through the whole thing at least once.

Does the manual have coupons for juice?

Was this guy also a chip in the MMBN4 games? Or am I crazy?

1. yes
2. because it has a solar sensor, the main gimmick of the game, like the one thing everyone knows about the game

Did I say something to upset you guys?

I remember being hyped as fuck when it was released way back then, they chose the worst time to release it though and it was right when school started again, meaning fall was around the corner (Sept 2003, last half of the month I think).

I was never one to play vidya for just a couple of minutes, I wanna sit down for an hour at a time and I quickly lost interest in it until more than a decade later when I just played it in an emulator with a sunlight cheat. It was a great game when I finally got around to it, don't get me wrong, but the gimmick was a bad idea. Then again, fall and winter in NYC aren't forgiving.

It does actually what the fuck anon how do you know.

>>322986757
The actually yea you could get some stuff for MMNB4 and also get megaman stuff for Boktai. The reason the cartridge is longer is because The game actually uses sunlight to power the gun in the game, as in REAL LIFE sun.
>>
>>322987078
That's a pretty cool gimmick actually

What are the benefits of playing it in the sun?
>>
>>322987156
Melanoma
>>
>>322987078
I remember there were juice coupons in my manual and wondered if it was like that for all of them.
>>
>>322986991
We know more about video games than you! Ha ha!
>>
>>322987156
Benefits? Only requirements, you need UV rays to hit the sensor on the cart and recharge your in-game solar gun. Of course, I heard its possible to work around this with a greenhouse lamp.

Fun tip: MGS 4 has the solar gun and Snake shouts SUNLIGHT! when he raises it. You don't need any specific location though, just be outside in daytime chapters. Don't think it can be recharged in act 3 as the whole chapter takes place at night.
>>

>>322987156
Well it charges the gun up, but the manual also says that too much sun will overload your gun as well, so you have to be careful in deciding where you play the game, also talks about how glass makes sunlight weaker so playing near a window might not always work.

I swear this game sounds like a HIDEO Kojima game alright, blow your mind by merging the game with real life and keep screwing with you to the end.
>>
>>322987537
>Of course, I heard its possible to work around this with a greenhouse lamp.
Or a blacklight, or anything that generates UV rays.
>>
You only REALLY need the sun for piledriver boss fights. I think that means you need to be outside 5-6 times.

You should check out Boktai 2 and 3 (on emulator) if you like them. 2 really builds on the western stuff while keeping all the Norse mythology in play.
>>
the gimmick sucks if you're in NY and it's not summertime. great soundtrack, great gameplay though. it's like zelda and MGS combined with spaghetti westerns and star wars.
>>
>>322987536
s-sorry...
>>322987537
>>322987694

So if you don't charge up the gun in game can you just not use that weapon? Are there other ways to defeat enemies?

Would just like to note, playing Boktai on a GBA SP will hamper your experience as carts fit in on the bottom. So you'd play it at a weird angle and that's no fun. Played it on my Micro and it was fun.
>>
>>322987750
There are items in-game that can restore some of your ammo. Later in the game, you can get multiple batteries for your gun, and each has it's own ammo supply.

Alright, so

Your gun uses solar energy as power. Using your gun takes power. If you're outside (ingame) and the sun is out, you can hold A to charge your gun. The more sun is out, the faster it charges. If you're inside (ingame), there will sometimes be windows where light goes through, and you can charge in those spots as well.

After you beat a boss, you need to drag their coffin back to the Piledriver to purify them. Using the Piledriver requires irl sunlight to work. You activate 4 mirrors around the vampires coffin with your gun, and they start hurting the vampire. The vampire will attack you and try to break the mirrors; you dodge the attacks and shot the mirrors with your gun to fix them. The more sun there is, the faster you defeat the vampire.

But wait, there's more!

What if there's no sun? How do you charge your weapon? Well, when you're in the sunlight (in real life), you'll passively earn some solar energy which goes to the Sun Bank. The longer you're out in the sun, the more solar energy you get. You can withdraw solar energy to charge your weapons, and there's also interest in the bank, so it (very slowly) generates solar energy. You can also take out loans to get solar energy for your gun, but the interest rate is exorbitant.

There are also some items you can use to restore solar energy, but you do need actual sunlight to use the piledriver. Also there's no better feeling than playing Boktai at noon on a summer day.
>>
>>322988082
Well shit, I mean I could look for my old black GBA, I can understand what you mean, sense the old model let the games poke upward towards the sun.
>>
>>322987694

>Decide to pick it back up in the dead of winter.
>Only have an MGR plasma lamp.

It was apparently dangerous for the cart, but I got my fill.

Manlet by any chance? You have to be small if you think that shit was comfortable at all, pic related its probably you.
>>
>>322988383
What happened if you couldn't pay off the interest? Didn't you have to run on a treadmill?

Also it was great coming back to my save file years later and having a full bank account from interest.

Also also, you can use the solar grenades in pile driver boss fights. I believe with 5 you can kill the first couple bosses, but its mainly just for help if it gets cloudy during the fight.
>>
>>322988383
Cool that clears up a lot of questions, thanks!
>>
>>322988810
>What happened if you couldn't pay off the interest?
You got attacked by fireflies that leeched your solar energy whenever you collected it.
>>
>>322988881
Excellent, now we can stop having one-sided conversations in which you contribute literally nothing!
>>
>>322988810
I think you had to run on a treadmill, I never actually took a loan.

That's true, I forgot to mention solar grenades.

There are a few different kind of grenades in Boktai. Solar grenades give you two bars of sunlight (even indoors, iirc) for maybe 20 seconds or so.

>>
>>322989679

>>
>>322989662
'Cause it definitely is a great discussion when someone wanders into a thread without knowing the first thing about a game. It's a sure path to intelligent and worthy discourse!
>>
>>322989595
Yes, yes you did. Though Okage is quality, it's painfully slow. So good
>>
>>322989828
Yeah! How dare anyone wander into a thread and ask what it's about and ask questions.

Good thing this place is a no question zone
>>
>>322984024
This sounds interesting. I'll have to look further into this.

Thanks, OP.
>>
>>322989917
How long does Okage take to get moving? Or is it just always slow? I don't mind if its got like a 6 hour tutorial or something. I can deal with that.
>>
>>322990047
See, my statement about someone wandering into a thread and not even knowing the first thing about the game? That's not an exaggeration.

Your representation of my argument as being "nobody should ask questions ever"? That's a strawman argument. When you are incapable of actually addressing the point of the person you're talking to and you have to substitute another point to argue against you're really not worth arguing with at all.

Thanks for being a run-of-the-mill retard and making this simple.

No problem, I honestly remembered this game because some other anon talked about it. That's how I usually hear about games to get, whether it's a good idea or not remains to be seen, then again I got a physical Boktai so I think it's turning out alright.

I got it on amazon, the tag says 20 dollars but I bet it sold higher then that because of its rarity, then again some games are just sold at that price, I ended up with mischief makers at 20 dollars. So it usually comes from seller to seller

The reason that whole thing is happening is because someone asked how the games solar gimmick worked, and with how things are here, things got volatile quick. I can understand keeping dumbasses out, but this thread is one of the few chill threads I've seen in a while.
>>
>>322991924
Wow that sounds like a really good price since the cheapest I see with manual and everything is $50

Thread seemed pretty cool until someone got mad that people were answering some other guy asking about the game

Those questions didn't seem to dumb to me either since this game is kind of unique and all
