Well, even veteran players of D&D never fully agree because at the end of the day it's ultimately up to your GM's interpretation.

For example my interpretation is that people in most D&D settings are inherently some variation of neutral alignment because sometimes we like the law, we inevitably hate certain laws, and we're not mainly concerned with our own needs rather than what is good or evil. Most people aren't able to easily affect things outside of their lives and their outlook, beliefs, and actions more often than not reflect that.

So with this in mind I consider neutral the selfish alignment because even a lot of chaotic evil bastards are usually fighting for some kind of silly ideal.

Meanwhile, I've known GMs who decide the average person is is of the pure good or just lawful alignments and they consider selfishness to just be evil. I don't agree with that because say I only saved some kingdom because I wanted to help the princess I befriended. If I didn't help my friend she'd be dead but if it weren't for her I wouldn't have gone through the trouble, peril, and danger. That can be a selfish act but at the same time the selfish desire isn't an evil one in my opinion. Not at all selfish acts are evil, but under a certain GM self centered acts with good side effects can get you an evil label.


And yeah, no matter how you interpret it you'll find overlap very easily. Which is the main problem. Ironically simplifying the available alignments makes it less restrictive because you're not trying to justify the existence of a bunch of other alignments.

[A] A setting change. Most of these are fantasy medieval. What about cyberpunk? (Drastic change)

[B] Plan things out a bit more before asking for suggestions. Give people something to work off. Will it be Corruptions or Champions with a bit more graphics? Will it play a bit like GURPs in the way Baldur's Gate played like D&D?

Well, here's some suggestions for you. In all of these you'll have to learn at least one of these things pretty well but that shouldn't come as a surprise.

Make it Open Source. So in case you're not sure what that truly means many major programs (Windows, most games, skype) are closed source. Meaning you can't see the source code. Open source (Firefox, Chrome, Linux for example) have their source code available meaning any programmer can look through your code patch it and send their improvements to you in case you want to add that change to your program. This is great on a purely technical aspect alone but many are worried about plagiarism. However, for a small scale project like this and the right software license (you'll need to know about this anyway even if you're closed source so just do a bit of reading. Just a bit) you can prevent someone from just profiting it off it. The advantage to this in general is that you'll recruit coders from all over the world who will probably do it for free. Also /g/ will like it because open source is considered pro liberty, and they are crazy about that. They could code for you once you have something.

Next, I would look into other P&P rpgs. Maybe two more. The issue is that games based on D&D's mechanics have been done before. GURPS or World of Darkness would be good alternatives but you'll have to do some reading. GURPS would be simple to code because it's just arithmetic (which in a video game would be hidden from the player) and rolling 6 or under a skill.

Next. If you're new to art then maybe you should go the text game route so that art assets aren't the focus anyway. Writer's are easier to find than artists to help you out. Combined with open source and you'd have a very cool community project. Just don't become a Fenoxo.

Also look up some tools to help your art.

You might want to consider the Aurora Toolset for Neverwinter Nights. It's easy to use and there's even a script generator so you don't really need to learn how to code - you can plug in what you want to have happen and the program will make a script for it that you can copy and paste into the script editor.

Of course, you can't actually sell whatever you make. I skimmed the thread, but didn't see whether or not you wanted to make a profit from this or just create it for fun.

Also if you want to do more art. I would check out adobe illustrator (photoshop is okay too but if you're just drawing then stick with the program with the illustrating focus) and clip studio if you're willing to pirate. Krita is good too although it's Window's port may be so-so at the moment.

Someone in my family is in the AAA gaming industry (all I'll say) so I went to their personal site and found the sites that they use to find tools and other stuff. Found the colour picker. I think it's the first result on Google though but I did find some useful stuff.
