how do you tell if these games are any good? they almost always have a near 100% rating.
>giving your money to Sekai Project
Reminder they're SJW scums who censor games they publish if there's "problematic content" inside.
If you want a reason to hate Sekai Project aside from that, there's also the fact that they've got 10 outstanding kickstarters and are in the middle of running another right now.
It's amazing just how thoroughly this stuff has taken over Steam. I remember a few short years ago, we were joking about weebshit being on Steam, with misty-eyed sighs of a brighter future. Well, it arrived, and it sucks. It's all deviantart-tier bullshit and massively overpriced. Thanks gabe. Still no anime tab, either.
Someone posted a screencap of one of Sekai Project founder saying they might go bankrupt in 2016.
I read that. That's just standard PR apologetic frill. Of course they're going to avoid problematic content, they're selling on Steam not DMM or Getchu.
The less risks of lawsuits, the better. Sometimes it's not about a fucking agenda. I know this because I have to deal with COPPA on a daily basis.
>Used to be just a simple website, with a basic forum translating School Days
>Has become this monster after selling out to JAST
FUCK that's sad, they even deleted all traces of their old selves, forum and all. Years worth of posts gone in the blink of an eye for this.
You're the retarded one.
I said I don't give a shit about the reasons. I'm just glad this shitty dev projects made in 10 hours cash grab got blown the fuck out. Shit or censored shit is still a shit.
>how do you tell if these games are any good?
Does the game have animu?
Then it is actually shit. The only people who played the garbage are weebtards who circlejerk to weebshit.
GET THIS GARBAGE OFF OF STEAM!! STOP CATERING TO CONSOLE CONVERTS WHO ARE BORED WITH THEIR BLOODBORNE/NETFLIX MACHINE!
FUCK YOU GABEN!! JUST MAKE HL3 RIGHT FUCKING GOD DAMN NOW YOU FAT FUCK!!
Even this shit has a 51% approval rating
>GET THIS GARBAGE OFF OF STEAM!! STOP CATERING TO CONSOLE CONVERTS WHO ARE BORED WITH THEIR BLOODBORNE/NETFLIX MACHINE!
It's only going to get better, Anon. Worse for you, but better for everyone who isn't literally retarded.
>FUCK that's sad, they even deleted all traces of their old selves, forum and all
Not really no. If you're that interested in knowing about them, here's Kanna/Raymond Qyan, one of Sekai Project founder.
>boku no vndb.org
this one's pree gud so far tho.
sachi best girl
The problem with most japanese anime-style games is that only fans really give them a try.
Grisaia on Steam is a shitport without ero and no way to patch it back in.
Neptunia games have ratings around 96-98% as well just cause only Nepfanboys buy them.
The ratings are not to be taken seriously. Weebs rating porn high is the same thing as shit eaters liking scat porn.
The problem is that you have to buy that garbage to review it, and nobody except desperate virgins do buy it, so they are the only ones to rate it. Same goes for any fanservice game ever like neptunia
>Kindred Spirits on the Roof
That's mangagamer. They're "one of the good ones", as far as japanese porn game companies go, in that the only offensive thing they do if jew you to pay more for the uncensored version.
Windows 7 is best girl.
Don't buy localized Sekai Project/Frontwing shit. Both are insane jews.
This is what always happens with niches titles. Only those who know they'll like it will buy it. they will of course rate it high too. Now anyone who doesn't like it won't even try it so you won't see bad reviews.
Let me guess,
>plan an unrealistic release schedule
>kikestarter barely covers the budget
>the schedule doesn't hold
>salary costs skyrocket
>poor sales, revenue doesn't cover shit
>we're in the reds mates
The entirely anime porn game translation business is an incestuous orgy of a handful of contractors used by everyone.
Literally none of the people actually translating Sekai Project's games are salaried. The guy who translated grisaia for example, went on to a mangagamer contract right after.
>mfw this is real
This makes me happy, Sekai project is a fucking awful company. The VN medium should really be left in the hand of the fans. Grisaia is almost a straight copy of the fan translation. And least we not forget the Michiru Idol spinoff that got completely fucked.
It's a pretty fair point, there's a huge slice of games wherein the only people likely to look at them or buy them let alone review them are going to be people with a vested interest or a fan already. Weeb games are a significant part of that slice.
>Michiru Idol spinoff that got completely fucked
Honestly, the ero is usually the shittiest part of these games.
The real issue is paying for an 'official' translation that's either worse than what you can get for free that isn't censored, or is just a complete copy of the fan translation.
Like, didn't they sell Clannad recently and it was basically the same as the original translation?
For a VN this is top of the line. It's not without flaws, the routes are a mixed bag and are in general worse than the common route, but it's still pretty good. If you're into VNs then just pick it up, you can't go wrong. If you're new to the genre just pirate it or something if you're afraid you'd get burned.
>game have h-scenes
>game has 100% score no matter what other flaws has
I am also to blame
>Seinarukana is 100% translated and ready to be released
>translators won't release it anyway because JAST bought the project or something and keeps it locked around somewhere in the basement
>meanwhile they keep shitting out crappy kusoge that nobody gives a shit
Let it burn to the ground
>vol.2 in February
I wonder if Humble Bundle will do a Nekopara-themed daki cover like they did last year with Hatoful Boyfriend?
Remember back in 2005 when everyone inclined on /av/ read YMK, Tsukihime and Planetarian because there was fuck all else translated?
Who would have thought a decade later even that tiny community would be fleeced on steam?
I want you to take a good look at what comes out regularly and tell me with a straight face Grisaia is anywhere lower than the top 20%. You can be an elitist gook shitter all you want but you and me both know the large majority of the stuff that comes out is plain garbage. There's a reason why a lot of this shit goes untranslated.
>All these people who haven't played Grisaia for the Juice
You're clueless if you think the reason why things are untranslated is because they're bad. No company makes a VN, sees it sell in Japan and then thinks
>well it's trash, let's not translate it
Instead the idea of translating it doesn't even come to them, since they're 100% focused on the Japanese market.
And if you're talking about the English side, maybe you should check Mangagamer, they're translating tons of random third-grade nukiges, because they sell to EOPs. And fantranslations are practically non-existent nowadays, if we don't count attempts at machine translating from Fuwanovel, which go nowhere.
And hell, I doubt quality was Koestl's major concern when selecting what to translate, otherwise he could have chosen made VNs much better than Grisaia.
Which brings me to the fact that "top 20%" isn't "top of the line".
Also your choice of words
>You can be an elitist gook shitter all you want
suggests you're an EOP, so just shut up. All your ideas about majority of VNs are probably crap you read here on /v/ or some Reddit.
And no, I'm not denying there are many trashy VNs coming out all the time, but hey, reply like I'm doing it anyway.
>Fate/Stay Night has no official translation despite spin-off games getting official translations, the anime AND spin-off anime getting official dubs and further games and anime planned for the future
I just want to find out how much of the translation was just the translators themselves and how much was Nasu being a weird fucker.
>Game has no English version
>Fins manage to translate it
I'm not him, but I'm curious about these Jap only masterpieces /jp/ always brags about being able to read. Give me some names, preferable with youtube videos demonstrating the art and music quality. Because god knows the writing is only 30% of what makes a quality VN, 50% being music and 20% being art.
It might be true that VNs aren't "real" games, but that complaint went out of the window when Steam started selling software and shit.
It's not like not being video games makes them bad by default, that's like saying a book is awful because you can't play it.
>All Sister Heroines
>All Loli Heroines
I am game.
Yuuji being a smart ass was the best part of Grisaia, hands fucking down.
I've heard the later games go by a harem route or something. Is this true? Because I really hate harem routes.
No, actually writing is the most important thing.
I'll name some untranslated VNs notable for their quality. I'll just their Japanese names, so you can just look up videos yourself on Youtube easily. Or their soundtracks, if you feel music is so important. You can also use the Japanese names to search on VNDB, that works too.
Dies Irae Acta Est Fabula
ものべの happy end
Well this are some that come to my mind now. I tried to include various genres. If there is any specific genre you're interested in, do tell.
This are the heroines for their new upcoming game.
Does it feel like a good combination of heroines for a new VN in 2016?
But... why? There's no doubt he can speak English just fine so why the hell would you translate an eroge to Finnish where maybe few dozen people read it, instead of English where hundreds would read it?
>Another VN in Finnish, but not english
I think Steam has all of three good Visual Novels anyway.
Fans of this type of software are somehow similar to comix or book readers. They may dislike the plot but they always appreciate the work of creators. So it's good for them unless it's really terrible and short.
>writing is the most important thing
The audiovisual experience is the only thing propping them up. Converted to standard prose, these books have terrible writing, some of the worst pacing in the written word. They wouldn't make it as paperbacks.
If the anime is anything to go by, This series really hates housepets, Loves shock value and the comedy is stale.
It try's to give the illusion of a believable story with shock value and drama, Only to turn around and make completely no sense afterwards.
Nobody in their sane mind would fan-translate long nukige for free. And generally it's shorter nukige and plot-heavy stuff that sells officially.
2MB+ of script is huge undertaking when you're not sure how it'd perform.
>did a full translation of a ~5 hour game just to see if it would work in his language
The absolute madman
>tfw fapping to the CGs every night
>tfw I will never experience it in its full glory
I just want to read that one girl drink that bottle of cum and listen to her swallowing it all, senpai
Why would you expect any better from /v/ posters of all place?
>That just makes it look like they only played 3 VNs in their life.
Isn't that the case most of the time? Those people probably don't even know GIGA, Ninetail, or Eternal etc. exist.
Music and ending to G-Senjou is better even if everything else was in Sharin.
The entire jail scene made my tear up like a bitch and I still can't hear the song without feeling the effects.
Thankfully sequel streamlined the detective shit. Fuck getting your good ending ruined because you examined scenery in wrong order. Fuck getting it ruined because not finding two pixels between book.
>how slow can mangagamer possibly be?
Depends totally on translator on each project. Arunaru went through Haruka on lightning speed, as did whoever did Tokyo Babel.
Meanwhile Kouryuu has been going at Da Capo 3 for like... three years now? I think?
>And where is Umineko?
I hear it's entering testing soon? Dunno where I got that from, could be wrong.
At least use statistics from a relevant site.
>those female underwears hidden inside Kenichi's suitcase
>that blue hair chick making extra food for Kenichi all the time
>All his "monologues" the MC does he ends with "right, sis?"
Man I felt really stupid for not getting the big reveal until it was literally right in the middle of my screen, the game kept dropping hints left and right.
>Implying I need to understand everything when machine translations do it for me
It doesn't translate everything perfectly, but it's enough to understand the context and what they're saying.
Well, you obviously are really stupid, but that reveal surprising you isn't one of the signs. The reveal itself was dumb as shit because it introduced some of the most nonsensical bollocks you could think of. The obligation to "not exist" you are punished for your crime by us forcing everyone to ignore you or be deported to some hellish prison... The writing had some really fucking dumb shit up until then, but there it literally pulled it's pants down, shit in it's hands, rubbed it all over its cheeks and then put their pants on their head and did a handstand.
>still censoring it
I think you don't know what it means. I'm the one taking your games and playing them with no effort needed, fuccboi. While you learned a dead language which has no use.
Machine translations only work for simple titles with basic dialogue, and then you only really get context.
You're literally ruining games for yourself if you play them with machine translation. By all means, use it for some generic H-RPG to get the gist of the generic story of a female knight getting fucked by orcs, but it's not something you want to use in an actual story-based VN.
>cuck in denial
What's the matter, sissy? Mad that everyone can play your games?
Are your friend really that much of a rigid cunts? I mean, I'd rather don't have these kind of games on my Steam account either, but if someone in my group actually do get it we would just laugh about it for a week then forget about it.
There's problems with Sekai Project, but at least look at legit points. Grisaia isn't the problem.
>Grisaia is almost a straight copy of the fan translation
Because fan-translation team worked on official one, and they already put shitton of work to base script.
>Michiru Idol spinoff that got completely fucked
That's because of other fan-translator from Fuwanovel who got DMCA, but then decided to send his work to Frontwing, who then demanded that Sekai released it.
>The VN medium should really be left in the hand of the fans
Sure, it's great when only overhyped shit gets translated at questionable quality. And I'm sure companies also love it when the fans think that there's nothing wrong with them getting the games for free.
Sekai is shit though.
Second game retcons basically the majority of the first game and goes with the worst routes as canon. Mitchiru is just schizophrenic for example rather than getting her shit sorted out.
Kazuki is still "hurf durf I'm so smurt even tho everytin I do is fucking retarded but somehow works anyway because the writer decided this retarded shit is somehow intelligent durrr"
Just finished the restored "if my heart had wings" and it's pretty much this.
Feel like I wasted my time.
>Muh random conflict out of nowhere because we need to meet the conflict quota.
Yeah going through her backstory it was all so obvious. Everything going to hell in her life and then her only/best friend commits suicide in front of her. I was completely expecting her to get split personality from that. But nope, have some silly cell memory.
>Dev gets script size from writer
>Advertizes new VN as being 9999MB in lenght!
>Fans read it and call bullshit, because there's only 0,5MB worth of content
I wonder why nobody does it.
>don't know moonman speak
>tfw will never get to play Monobeno or the new loli train game they're making
>can't use machine translation because the writing is too complex
>can't hope for a translation because Monobeno is 5Mb of text that is incredibly difficult to translate/read due to its style
Fucking moon people. Why do they not translate their stuff? Do they hate my money?
If you like moonmen, why not just learn moonman speak? You could read Monobeno pretty comfortably in a year.
Sounds like a long time, but you're talking about an hour of work a day, tops. You probably spend more time than that jerking off.
Unless it's gameplay eroge, very little testing actually goes into visual novels. Many of consistent errors in liarsoft's Steampunk games were only fixed after they got full-voice re-releases.
>You could read Monobeno pretty comfortably in a year.
That sounds like a bit of a stretch, if the whole "it has really fucking complex dialog and shittons of it" thing is true. And a year is peanuts to me, but the problem is I'm juggling a shitton of things at the moment.
I also have no idea where to start learning moonspeak.
A full time job, managing a budget for my apartment, and dealing with law school is a bitch.
>how do you tell if these games are any good? they almost always have a near 100% rating.
Weeaboos have no standards as long as they see animushit drawn stuff on screen.
Hint: they are all bad, because the developers know this fact, and they aren't needed to make good games.
All they need to do is hire a known artist and they're set.
I started 5 years ago and now I'm reading it with no problems. I just don't believe you would be able to read it with no problems in 1 year.
By "with no problems" I mean not having to look up pretty much anything, which I don't have to. Perhaps an odd word here and there, or some dialectical grammar. For mythological concepts coming up in the story, Monobeno actually explains them to the reader, since MC's sister, Natsuha, doesn't remember much about her childhood and traditional practices from Monobeno, so that's used to explain things to the reader.
Also I'm not implying 5 years are needed, that's just when I started reading it. But 1 year just don't feel like enough.
Of all the recommended options, Tae Kim is the only one I'd ever recommend anyone to use. And even then, it's not a great resource for English natives.
3 years without reading a VN is pretty crazy, they're great learning tools. It's best to learn new vocab from a native source instead of a list, because it gives context to the word and helps you remember it.
Books are also pretty good for that purpose.
