It's pretty dang fun, and looks good considering it's 10 years old. My only complaint is that all the enemies are bullet sponges, and the game throws so many at you.
And then you have special enemies like the armored guys who take up a shit ton of bullets. The good thing is that you can take out their legs and just pop off a few shots at them.
The worst enemy I've encountered so far are those fucking flying drones that shoot lasers at you. Wtf is up with those? The lasers eat right through your armor and they fire fast as shit. They're bullet sponges too, so you can't really take them down fast.

>>322870323 With that gun that shoots bit metal rods, it takes me about 3 shots. With the assault rifle it takes 2-3 bursts to bring them down with headshots. If you take them down before they see you, it only takes 1 bullet, but once you take one down, the other 4-5 in the area go into alert. Ammo isn't a problem, but I just hate letting my armor or health get low during firefights, because I have no idea what I'm going to be facing in another couple seconds. Now that I have to kill those fucking lazer drones, I need all the armor and medkits I can carry because those lasers just zap me down to 0 super quick.

The trance system going off outside of your control was even worse designed than VIII's limit spamming. The protagonist and antagonist being "space alien grim reaper brothers" is by far the worst plot twist in the series, much worse than either the orphanage in VIII or "You're a dream Teedus" could ever hope to be.
The worst part of all? In a series that's known for its innovation in its genre, Final Fantasy IX bitched out and actively BACKTRACKED to boring, outdated, mechanics. At least the early games it was a callback to were innovations of their time like the ATB system in IV, and at least for the PSX titles VII, VIII, and Tactics all tried to do new things with turn-based RPGs, storytelling, and world building even if it didn't please everyone- whereas IX actively decided to say fuck that, and appeal to idiots who want video games to stagnate.
It was boring and had nothing unique going for it. In fact, nothing about the game is particularly memorable. It has no sense of identity for itself and just takes after previous titles.
Be warned, that's the civilian version and it has a single-stack magazine well. You have to widen it yourself if you want it to accept STANAG dimension magazines. They neutered the shit out of that thing, it takes a bit of work before it's not a huge turd.
Nothing as fun as just fucking slamming shit up with one of those walkers. Seriously, the amount of shit you could pull to destroy buildings was amazing and it doesn't bog you down with the story, at all, even the intro is incredibly short before you are unleashed upon the EDF

Something just 'clicked', the re-released version was lightyears ahead of the shitty clunky G4WL version which seemed to have that horrible mouselook emulation patched over the console controls, where the mouse appears to move in 5 pixel increments.

The shooting is hella solid, the graphics and setting are mind-blowing, co-op is fun, and the crafting has a lot of range once you get the hang of it. If you play like an action title with horror elements the disappointment fades into the background.
