Monks by their honor would fight to protect their friends and party against anyone who attacks them.

Yes, because they promote the art of self-defense.

Most RPG classes are designed to be killing machines, going through thousands of mobs to obtain that precious exp. They will even killing human "thief" mobs if necessary and without a second thought. So it's hard to envision a Monk to sign off to this, even if he simply was a travel buddy.

Fighter class was made for casuals. He's perfectly capable on his own, but people mistakenly believe that he's the best character class in 1.
