This is the only JRPG on the N64. Isn't that SAD? They had the SNES that has JRPGs considered the best in the world still out of 40 years of video games, and the N64 only had a single fucking one.

Isn't that sad? What about 3D makes it bad for a japanese role playing game?
>>
What about Ogre Battle?
>>
>>322849627
The PS1 took all of Nintendo's third parties. Most critical one was Square. Thus the N64 was a machine that had mostly first party games, with the odd third party title here and there.

rts
>>
>>322849748
more of a strategy rpg
>>
Space limitations brought you by cartridges.

JRPG's took a lot of space you know, even in the PSX, they had to use 2 or more discs to fit in a whole game.
>>
>>322849627
All the JRPG developers fled to PlayStation because compact disc technology

That's literally it
>>
Super Mario RPG was bad and it was 3D.
>3 person party shares flower points
>timed hits don't make a lick of sense
>BOWSER joins you
>the original characters Mallow and Geno were so bad they never appeared in anything else, ever
>frog coins
>Squaresoft had to throw in Culex for no reason
>100 jumps for some special secret armor when the game is over at level 30 anyway

whot he fuck
>>
>mfw they took away spin dashing in TTYD
>mfw they took away companion fast movement in TTYD
>mfw they put in load times in TTYD
>mfw they took away those fun pigs you like hatched from some egg in TTYD
>mfw they made a shitty sewer system that is a chore to navigate that makes all the running around even worse than it had to be

They had paper fucking mario as a template and couldn't even copy the qualify of life improvements that were already there. It's like they didn't even play the game. "oh yeah man yoshi should jump a centimeter off the ground AND stop you from entering any tunnels and doors and talking to other people while you're on him" fuck you
>>
It would be sad if it wasn't the best rpg of that generation.
>>
What about Quest 64
>>
>>322849627
Yamaguchi openly discouraged JRPG's because he thought they were for lonely basement dwellers.

Weird thing is I think Suikoden 2 and the BoF games had like one FMV so it's hardly a stretch for them to be 64 games.
>>
Is Megaman Legends an RPG?
>>
>>322849627
at least PM64 is super fucking good and a classic
>>
>>322852608
Amen. My brother in particular is obsessed with Paper Mario, beaten it 6 times and counting. I've only beaten it once but damn did I have a lot of fun
>>
Funny thing, it was one of THE best games in the genre.
>>
>>322854995
I wholeheartedly agree.
It's weird how small of a library the N64 had yet I enjoyed every game I played on it.
>>
>>322855337
You could say Yamauchi did what he did to assure quality control, and it showed tenfold.
>>
Aidyn Chronicles
>>
>>322849627
Quest 64
>>
>>322849884
most of that space was taken up by shitty cutscenes

Beaten it nearly 3 or 4 times, definitely one of the best N64 titles.

>all these b-b-but Quest 64 plebs

okay how about a GOOD rpg besides Paper Mario on the N64 as an exclusive?

Aidyn chronicles, though it wasn't a jrpg
>>
>>322859703
It's bad, senpai.

The only redeeming feature was the magic system, and it was horribly unbalanced.
>>
The Saturn had the best JRPGs
>>322850651
You mean Holy Magic Century?
>>
>>322857379
Holy shit, how have I never realized that all of the Paper Mario 1 partners are based off Mario's enemies till now? What the fuck?
>>
>>322859805
I liked it. People kept saying things were wrong with it that I didn't have a problem with. People said it was harder and required more grinding than it actually did. People said dodging was hard.

Literally all of those people need to git gud. It had many many flaws, but it was by no means a bad game. It was at least a 6/10 when I played it.

>>322851664
It does have a lot of RPG elements/inspiration to it in the customization, character interaction, and the world on the whole, but I'd say it's still more of an action/adventure than anything.
>>
>>322860553
Somebody get this hothead out of here.
>>
>>322849627
The problem was the FMV meme in the 90s.

Nigger that's fucking toad town
>>
>>322850037
I'd say Super Mario RPG is overrated to hell and back, but its not a bad game, and a lot of those points are complete bullshit
>>
Robopon 64
Shiren 2
>>
>>322850037
>the original characters Mallow and Geno were so bad they never appeared in anything else, ever

Geno made a cameo appearance in M&L Superstar Saga and is a mii costume in Smash 4
>>
>>322850037
Culex is an optional boss, Bowser is awesome in any game that has him be your ally especially the RPGs, and Mallow and Geno are owned by Square not Nintendo so Square lets them rot.
>>
>>322859879
The only good one is SF3
>>
We almost had Earthbound 64. It got really far into development until they switched to the gba
>>
PM, Ogre Battle, Quest 64, Hybrid Heaven are the only JRPGs I can think of on the N64. There was also like one more, but I remember it not being good at all, so I forgot its name.
>>
>No mentions of Wonder Project J2

I'm disappointed in you /v/
>>
>>322865948
To be fair, that was Japan only originally. Also, wasn't that more of a raising simulator or something?
>>
>>322850037
The only complaints I have with it are how useless Mallow is, how similar Bowser and Geno were in terms of stats, and the platforming bits in the overworld. No 3D Isometric game with a D-pad should EVER have precision platforming.
>>
Would Hybrid Heaven qualify?

You're forgetting the massive kickbacks Sony was handing out.
Developers weren't running to the Saturn, Sega CD, and Neo Geo CD in droves just because they used discs.

Don't forget that it was at the very end of the console's lineup since they had to squeeze the hell out of the cartridge space, and also without cutscenes, voice acting, and other jazz used in PS1 RPGs

Paper Mario is fucking great though and better than 95% of the PS1's RPGs.
