Before my hard drive failed, and I said "fuck it" to replaying Dark Souls, since I was at the last boss when it happened, I had a cleric build who specialized in sword and shield and faith.

The game wasn't terribly difficult, especially after I got those high damage cleric spells, but that last boss was bullshit against my build.

Dark Souls II took 20 steps forward from DaSI and then 2000 steps back. It's frustrating and insulting how much promise is in that game and how it's all been squandered. They prove how well they can do in a few select places and the rest of the game is void of such talent.

It truly get pissed off when I play DaSII, not because it's hard or it's annoying, but because it drives me crazy to see a game with some really good ideas get absolutely destroyed like that.

Well, we all know that namco loves the "so hard guise prepare to die FOR REAL" marketing, as it's everywhere in DaS and DaSII.
Someone at either FROM or NAMCO thought it would be a spectacular idea to have players be invaded regardless of human/hollow form. That way, the game would be even more hardcore!
Then somebody at FROM must have remembered that DaSI existed, and what happened in it. Twinkers.
Twinking is retarded, don't get me wrong, but in DaS and DeS the solution was easy: stay hollow. Kind of a hack job of a fix, and something had to be done about it obviously, but it worked.
If you could be invaded while hollow in DaSII, twinking would be fucking unstoppable. ESPECIALLY with the health loss upon death.
So B-team obviously had to backpedal super hard and throw in a shitton of anti-twink measures to balance it out. These anti-twink measures ended up killing the PvP in numerous ways.
SM exists just to prevent twinking.
Effigy Burning exists just to prevent twinking.
Way of Blue/Sentinels is basically an anti-twink anti-invader covenant, which is why you can join it as soon as you start the game.
The removal of no-scaling weapon upgrades also was to combat twinks, but this one actually makes sense.
Only one of those would really be needed to solve the problem, but instead they used every single one. 3/4ths of those things would not even be necessary if invaded while hollow didn't happen, so someone in development must have forced this idea. And in the end, SM and effigy burning ended doing more harm than good in Souls PVP.
