>>322822785 >>322823284 I'm just up to the final boos of Alundra right now. It could have matched the median quality of the series, if dreamwalking allowed you to freely interact with the areas inside NPC's minds. Instead, the fact that every character you can dreamwalk gets killed off in the story completely limits the structure of the game for no good reason and makes it a mostly linear slog for at least 2/3rds of the game. There's relatively little emphasis on the kinds of exploration that the better Zelda game's focus on, as its about crawling through a fuck ton of dungeons, half of which you can't go back and re explore.
>>322824027 There's a fair share of exploration, but yeah the game sometimes gets bogged down by bad decisions that Zelda was already getting right for years at that point. My main problem with the game was the often stupid platforming though, but still, it does have plenty strongpoints, hence why I said it's as good as a Zelda.
>>322823857 >>322822249 everything level-5 did was trying to kill another series. Dark Cloud - Zelda Layton - Phoenix Wright LBX - Custom Robo/Pokemon (yeah, I know). Fantasy Life - Rune Factory Yo-kai Watch - Pokemon
Let this be a reminder that there is only one way of doing something and all else are clones or trying to kill series outright.
When you can name a game similar to Dark Cloud before Dark Cloud came out, sure. Combining a JRPG with a deep weapon building system (for its time) dungeon crawling and city building was unique for 2000, especially when the vast majority of other JRPGs at the time were turnbased and trying to be Final Fantasy.
There is literally 0 similarities between Zelda and Dark Cloud by the way.
I'll never stop shilling for this game and how it's better than Luigi's Mansion in practically every way.
The concept of going into a room in the mansion and completing a puzzle/beating the boss/sucking up little ghost spirits is done so much better in this game. The puzzles and bosses are incredibly varied compared to Luigi's Mansion, and the mansion feels so much larger and is actually pretty spooky at times.
>>322824609 Like I said, just played through it and definitely no. It only gets a decent amount of non-linearity over half way through and doesn't stand out over Zelda in any particular aspect. I know it gets praise for the handful of non-trivial logic puzzles it has, but only the idiots who think Zelda is about pushing blocks into holes would think of this as such a huge plus point that it exceeds the series entirely.
>>322825421 Okami is fucking garbage mate, the game cannot leave you alone to play the game without interrupting you in every single step, and Isshun just cannot help but spoil the solution for every single puzzle. It's more handholdy and tedious than fucking Skyward Sword. Artstyle and atmosphere are really the only things the game has going for it, even the exploration is ruined because everything is so simple and spelled out for you.
And what does Nier have to do with Zelda? I haven't played Nier yet but I've never seen anyone compare it to Zelda.
>>322825421 Okami in particular has garbage bin tier gameplay. No I don't care about a game that shares all of TP and SSs worst problems yet is passed off as better than any classic Zelda because 'muh girilllion folded Nippon artstyle'.
>>322822559 Sonic is better yes but when factoring the idea of Sonic which is to basically speedrun the levels Mario somehow still found a way to be faster without even trying. So with that being said Sonic is a huge failure at what it was trying to be.
>>322826302 Minish Cap could have been pretty good but it was short and easy, so short it's hard to call it a memorable experience.
OoT, sorry but it doesn't stand the test of time. As the first 3D Zelda it's praiseworthy but playing it now you can see all its shortcomings Like, the Oku tree, the very first dungeon, is one of the best designed dungeon in the game, because they couldn't be hassled after that.
MM is another thing, I played it again on 3DS and it's hard to call it a great game but the concepts is interesting sure
TP is a game that is FULL of problems like the fact that you get any freedom 3/4 of game in, the horrible wolf part that ruin the pacing, the overworld in general that is pretty boring, etc... But it has some of the best dungeons in the franchise Again due to all its flaws it's hard to call it a great game, it's a game that start pretty weak, has a strong mid point and end pretty weak
>>322826479 It is a well made game. The only flaws (beyond being "muh opinion" tier) I can see that would make the game off putting would be the sounds NPCs make, the long ass intro, the bear ball minigame, last blockhead, missable items and maybe the ending/story (though even that would mostly be opinion based as it would require you to know some culture to get it). Also the NG+ items are kinda shitty but I'm sure that is also opinion based as someone out there most likely loved it.
The game isn't perfect but those are literally the only flaws I can think of for the whole game. Comparing to most other games at the time that is pretty good and comparing to most games nowadays it may as well be perfect.
Either I stumbled into a parallel warp somewhere, or it's becoming more obvious that 4chan has been swarmed with children. There's no other reason why this many people should be getting anal about the line between Dark Cloud and Zelda. Dark Cloud was legitimately pitched as a "Zelda killer" in its debut, it's not just an appearance thing you fucking idiots.
>>322827776 Viewing the game in terms of how many flaws it doesn't have doens't mean much when the core of the game just isn't any good in the first place. Instead of Zelda style progressive re-explration you are told what to do and handed situation where its completely obvious how you're supposed to use your powers. Golden Sun pulls off this style of gameplay much better.
>>322828185 For some reason I never saw that one commercial(or was it a review?) comparing it to Zelda back then. Maybe it was an US only thing? So at the time I played the game without drawing any comparisons to Zelda.
Fast forward a few years and apparently that game was known as a Zelda-killer, and I never understood why.
>>322828173 I remember magazines saying shit like it would Sony/Playstation's Zelda. That said, it's pretty distinctly different, from setting to gameplay mechanics. I still need to get around to playing Dark Cloud 2.
>>322828218 I know this but the final boss is fucking garbage and kept 1 shot killing me any time I tried to move away from where the developers wanted me to be with his magic sniper rifle that kills from any angle.
The boss is 2 is pretty shit too but still 10 times better than the one in this game.
Haven't finished the 3rd but I expect the boss will be shit as well.
The boss in the Tomb Raider reboot was actually much better than in Uncharted.
>>322828019 Yes, both Soul Reaver and Blood Omen stand up really well. Soul Reaver is seriously well designed and organically composed but it's mostly an exploration based game, it's more comparable to a Metroid than a Zelda really I'd say that if you can stand the ps1 graphics it stands the test of time pretty well
>>322828473 Also, fuck the Demon Tower in Dark Cloud. Still probably going to do it eventually
>>322828551 People really exaggerate the text. The intro is really slow, a few of the lighthouses have overly long dialogues, and obviously the ending is wordy as fuck. But everything else is paced well. Golden Sun TLA even kind of cut back on the dialogue. Barring Lemuria, holy fuck.
>>322829258 >But everything else is paced well No it's not. Seriously Golden Sun is ridiculous, the only reason it could be referenced by anyone with a brain would be him reminiscing about his first baby rpg on the GBA
Bringing Golden Sun into this is like the worse decision you could do, heck I was even agreeing with you about Okami
>>322826041 I think OoT and MM are borderline masterpieces if you can endure the unskippable dialogue and cutscenes. Because the visuals and pacing haven't aged well, it would be incredibly easy for Nintendo to make a superior 3D game, but they always want to include gimmicks or hand-holding that ruin the overall experience. If they made a "modern" OoT with better pacing/enemy population, it would be a masterpiece as far as I'm concerned. Hopefully the new game will be something along those lines. I'm sure it will be a casualized mess, though.
>>322829693 Be serious, OoT isn't close to being a masterpiece. A true masterpiece stands the test of time, you can call it a pioneer or a first great effort or a very impressive game for its time but a masterpiece it is not
>>322829653 Not the same anon you were originally talking to, but Golden Sun is pretty decent, if not simplistic. The Lost Age was a great sequel, and improved a lot of things about the game. Dark Dawn is shit. The original is just decent.
>>322830073 >>322829363 people take a quick glance and come to assumptions without actually looking into a series. So green elf-like protagonists? ZELDA COPY! Collectable monsters? POKEMON COPY! The cycle is complete shit.
>>322828576 >The boss in the Tomb Raider reboot was actually much better than in Uncharted. But it was just a qte though, unless you're referring to that giant samurai, which was a shitty copypasted fight from that early one against the other giant guy.
>>322830753 That's a given since we're already comparing it to Zelda in general. I'm saying that even a game like GS handles its core gameplay better than Okami does, that's how weak it is. I'm not holding up Golden Sun as a masterpiece.
