The problem is, Ivysaur doesn't really make that much sense as his own character.

The only reason it and Squirtle were included in Brawl to begin with was for the Pokemon Trainer. PT was designed to represent a lot of things for the Pokemon series: The main playable character of the series, the three starter types, the three stages of evolution, the tag-team gameplay, type weaknesses, etc. Squirtle represented water types and the first evolution phase, Ivysaur represented grass types and the middle stage of evolution, and lastly Charizard represented fire types and the final evolution form.

And well, with transformations out the window and ergo Pokemon Trainer scrapped, there wasn't really a need for such characters. Charizard was the exception because he's popular and iconic enough to stand on his own. Technically, you can argue the case for Squirtle too, but then there's Ivysaur, who would of absolutely never been playable in Smash by any other circumstances. It's far less popular than Bulbasaur or Venusaur. But, at the same time, it'd be a bit mean to include Charizard and Squirtle while leaving Ivysaur in the dust, so it was just better to take the latter two out altogether.

I kinda like the idea of Chorus Kids representing Rhythm Heaven because their general design and concept encompasses the musical motif of the series, more than a generic karate guy or wrestler.

I'd compare it to Wii Fit. Technically the mascot of the game is a living Wii Fit board and Miis are the playable characters, and yet WFT just felt most appropriate and fitting to represent a fitness based game.

why, characters like doc or dark pit should be alts, not characters who play nearly entirely different from their "base" character. I know their clone characters but both have pretty unique movesets, especially lucas who only shares like three moves with ness.

She wasn't marginally more popular, she was exceptionally more popular, not just amongst fans, but the actual devs too. She's so far beyond Daisy, Waluigi, etc in popularity, the only other Mario character that might have made more sense was Toad and even then, he's obviously Peach's B.
