Why was ODST's campaign so boring?

It was an amazing survival type game with a classic feel, progress as far as you can and get as many points as you can with a limited number of lives, and it gets gradually harder as time goes on.

Most people now don't like classic modes like this, they need something gimmicky, hence why CoD zombies and GoW's horde mode are popular.
