Until 343 took over and released the turd that Halo 4 is, Halo was the FPS series that was the closest to classic arena shooters. Its gameplay mechanics are also well beyond most FPSes out there, PC included, for they are incredibly basic on the surface, allowing everyone to play, while being quite complex underneath, allowing actual skill, or I would rather say, strategy. The balance between weapons, melee, grenades, vehicles, and all other elements is outstanding, and it's probably one of the few games where no weapon is left aside as "being useless".
It is the only FPS I've played so far that exhibited such a level of strategy in everything. Yes, the action is slow, no it doesn't focus heavily on precise shooting, but that's precisely because it's all about making the right choice at the right moment.
There really is something about Halo you don't see in any other game, and people tend to appreciate that.

Games such as CoD are twitch shooters, where it's all about getting the drop on your enemy. You aren't trying to control the map but rather move through certain paths that minimize your blind spots while maximizing your threat range.
Team Fortress and Overwatch are class shooters. You pick a loadout that synergizes with your teammates and work together to achieve an objective through everyone maximizing their own classes' strength.

I wouldn't say it had the same sort of depth as a class shooter (TF2 class not CoD class) because you aren't really working with ideas such as team comp or counters though. It had a lot more tactical depth than strategic depth.

This is laughable because I've played them up until 4. The problem is that most of what you would call 'deep' mechanics are already present in PC shooters such as UT, Tribes, TF2, Enemy Territory, etc. The difference between them is that the gunplay in halo is very slow and the physics floaty. It was a good game for it's time and great for introducing people to the genre. However it's very slow and lacks the movement mechanics present in most PC FPSes thus making it a slower and in effect a shallower arena based shooter. Even the melee system that you so lauded is essentially devaluing positioning by bein a lockon animation dependent on lenient positioning. Not to mention an instant kill if you have a sword.
People who say blanket statements like you did usually don't have the experience playing other games of higher skill to back it up. Halo was good but it wasn't great, people dismiss it because a lot of the lacking movement mechanics are because it WAS MADE FOR CONSOLES. I even played it on PC back in the day religiously for a while but then ultimately went back to UT.
