From the meager info / peoples opinions I've gathered, Melee is faster and generally viewed as requiring more skill? Played a bit of SSB 64 as a kid and only just played Sm4sh on 3DS / Wii U now and enjoyed it. Any opinion is appreciated senpai.
Sm4sh is better. More characters, more balance amongst the characters, more competitive value due to being able to make any stage completely flat with no gimmicks while still keeping many competitively viable stages from previous games.
Ice Climbers aren't really top tier and no one ever consistently places top 8 with them.
I'd argue Puff as well since only HBox can play Puff at high level (Leffen, Mang0, etc.).
if you are really into competative smash, look no further. Melee is the most competative in the series. It will test your execution, and reactions like no other smash in the series.
Play for fun? Then you can ignore Melee's balance and play the most versatile and fast gameplay that can be played casually. Melee has the funnest iterations of all the characters, limited to melee. Smash 64 is cool too.
It requires more skill because it does not have input buffering. While I like Melee, I don't like how people act as though the lack of an input queue makes it objectively superior to Brawl, PM, or Smash 4. Even Street Fighter and UMvC3 use input buffering. It was just the way of the future for so many people to pick it up, and it makes games feel nicer to play.
>played with friends
>they got bored of the game
>met a guy at a club i went to school with way back. he cool.
>invites me over to play it
>lots of fat guys, young kids and bald autists
yeah no im done
>melee is dying
>genesis 3 has the most entrants for melee than any tournament
>Only Hbox can play at a high level
Mango fucking mained and dominated with Puff for the longest. Puff isn't more widely mained due to lack of excitement and how hard she relies on fundamentals.
>fast-paced; long combos/strings and easy ways to gimp opponent's recovery makes 4-stock matches necessary
>optimal spacing requires choosing which of your many movement options to use, and quickly reacting to your opponent's movement and adjusting on the fly
>advanced tech requires a high output of button presses per second with precise timing; use of tech is a hard requirement to enter competitive play
>6-10 viable characters (depending on who you ask), so competitive play requires matchup knowledge that is deep, rather than broad; in general, technical execution is more important than matchup knowledge
>slower-paced, but not as bad as Brawl; combos and strings are present, but not as long as Melee; nearly every character's recovery is buffed, so 2-stock format is used (this also allows for more offstage play with less risk, if that's your thing)
>optimal spacing requires more graceful movement, planning ahead, and predicting your opponent's defensive and (limited) movement options
>advanced tech requires precise control over the left stick; not really required for competitive play (at this stage in the meta)
>tier list is still up for debate, but this anon believes there are at least 30 viable characters; broad matchup knowledge is paramount, or else you're going to get janked out by low tiers in tournament
It all just comes down to preference. As a Sm4sh player, I don't pretend that my game of choice is "better" than Melee, but I like it for what it is.
>Watched a bunch of Isai's videos recently
>Realize how much more fast-paced and engaging it is at high level play compared to Smash 4, even though its gameplay is barebones as fuck due to being the first Smash game
Hitstun and shieldstun is far greater, but that just adds to the tension, meaning you can't just easily dodge out of everything. Really puts you on the edge.
>yfw smash 64 is still a good game
>6-stock Smash 64 matches end more quickly than most 2-stock Smash 4 matches
Do you want to spend the better half of a year practicing tech skill before you can even hope to compete? Melee
Do you want to jump right in and start learning fundamentals? Smash 4
Yep, that means Smash 64 is objectively a better game. That's now it works.
64 is hard as fuck to play competitively. If you're just a few hairs off, you die. All of the other Smash games (Melee included) leave so much room for error which makes the games a lot easier to pick up and play.
Brawl Ice Climbers had the same feel to them.
Not to mention you would have to play with the N64 controller, which is clunky and unwieldy as fuck
in my opinion.
It just astounds me that a game that supposedly has ""better"" balance and more unique characters manages to be so much more boring in comparison.
>hating weebshit on a site that was made for weebs
guess you're just a faggot that joined this site for muh smash 4 main threads then
>tfw think falcon is the most fun character
>tfw have to be labelled as a memester
I just went to a Smash 4 tournament with a friend to see what they were like. Melee was there as well. The Melee players were real pricks for some reason. Is it just a melee thing or just the one I went to? They had a huge elitist vibe going compared to Smash 4 players who were welcoming to me besides some faggot Dedede player.
I play traditional and 3D fighters, so I don't really have a horse in the race.
Memes are meant to be fun, Anon. Just enjoy your character.
I'll give you the others, but come on, son.
>guess you're just a faggot that joined this site for muh smash 4 main threads then
I'm a weeaboo, but that does not mean that I should choke on Nippon cock just because some nobody happened to be good to a bunch of people who take a game where you can kick Pikachu in the face with Yoshi too seriously. Maybe I have played Smash since the beginning for the characters that I liked and grew up with instead characters virtually no one knew about and are circlejerked over because MUH TOURNEYS. Even when Kirby was gutter trash in Melee, I still liked to play as him instead of characters I didn't give a shit about. Maybe I don't even care for Smash 4 or Smash Bros. as a series anymore because of the entire fanbase being full of autists.
Interesting. I was considering picking up Melee and that was a huge turnoff. I'll give another tournament a try and see. Im either going to start playing melee or Xrd competitively along with the others. We'll see how my next experience with Melee players go.
And apparently people think Mac mains are idiots. I took too eight in 4, but people seem to think he's shit.
>>322739410 is full of shit. I've been to Melee tournaments consistently before Sm4sh released, and everyone I fought has been either a prick or a Mexican.
Sm4sh tournies and locals I go to are full of generally chill dudes, they take the game seriously, but still go nice and slow with their shit, and are easily approachable after they whoop your ass. We usually go out for a pint after bracket's done.
But it's part of the hype, bro. Doesn't really matter. All those guys are true bros and probably reimbursed that guy for his TV. :)
Don't be mad that Trashmen are a bunch of primates who probably wouldn't do that and are just a punch of passive aggressive pricks.
that just turned the tv off, it's still working
meanwhile smash 4 players made one of their top players probably quit
Excuse me, I am not part of your community, I just wanted to know why all of you are autistic and un-self-awarely think that party games are fightan. I think your memes are gae and ur mom is lol. l always pass by these threads on 3chingagit and I see discussion of Super Trash Bros Manchild Edition and Super Trash Bros Amiibo Edition. I only see mentions of Super Trash Bros Le-Slow-May-May-xD Edition in contempt, but I never here men shuns of the game that started it all. If you have no repsex for your originas, then how can you be selfless, oh wait, you're artistic, I frogot. Gamepube is for Turok and Super Monkey Ball and Mario Retardy, not for gay-elmo-fucks-a-bear-workshop.
God i hope they ban ally from all sm4sh tournaments for this. He is a toxic asshole. He called out xaltis and lied about her editing supergirlkels wiki aswell just to create drama.
We prefer the term platform fighter, not party game.
Mind your pronouns.
Kek. Isn't that the same guy who spent the better part of 2 years practicing ICs chaingrabs? He got waaayy more shit for that than he does now, but suddenly his feelings are hurt? I dun geddit.
I like Sm4sh better cause it feels like all the characters are pretty different, sans clones, and can hold their own whenever.
Melee just kinda feels boring when I fight that same IC/Falcon/Marth for the 50th time and can't do anything because I made the mistake of choosing G&W.
Sm4sh has it's faults, sure, but I'd rather take that gameplay over Melee. In terms of Single Player tho, Melee trumps the shit outta Sm4sh objectively.
I think he meant natural online play. As in included in the base game, instead of something you have to set up yourself using Dolphin. You can't really say Mario Party 2 has online play just because you can get it to work, so why say that for another party game?
THE TWO STRAWPOLLS TO END ALL STRAWPOLLS
GET IT NOW
Melee for competitive if that's what you're into.
Smash 4 for the banter.
>that is a sm4sh Luigi main
>this is a melee Luigi main
I'm going to say this for the last fucking time now.
If the main reason people consider Melee to have a higher skill ceiling is because of the existence of side air dodge mechanics then that is a bad reason to consider it the better game.
Do you want to know why? Because the entire fucking reason for a Smash fighting game is tech. Do you guys ever watch tournament play in melee games? There's very little tech actually used which is funny because the entire POINT of this series is to use tech but nobody fucking uses it.
That's why Wavedashing was removed. The creators wanted people to focus on tech. I don't give a shit if it's more inefficient or whatever, but it is how it was meant to be played.
Melee's skill ceiling cap is unreachable because you need to be literally frame perfect. To Multishine with Falco you need to Shine, Shorthop, then shine on the 5th airborne frame exactly, then jump again, and repeat this for as long as possible. Only an AI could achieve such perfection. Mew2King tries to be exactly frame perfect because he knows it's the one way he can become the absolute best player in the world, but he fails to do so consecutively. That is why he is constantly hard on himself and thinks he played bad, because he wasn't frame perfect.
>If the main reason people consider Melee to have a higher skill ceiling is because of the existence of side air dodge mechanics
No that isn't the main reason. See>>322744445
Also I have no idea what you're talking about and I don't think you do either.
I'd rather get beat fair and square by someone who is better then me then deal with more Toon Links and Sonics rolling everywhere. Another think is Melee online has no children.
Little slow today, I say we post some webms while we're at it.
Why doesn't anyone want to talk about Smash?
