It let me down big time because of how bad it was as a kid. However it grew on me a little as I kept playing. I never replayed it though and had an overall bad experience. dmc3 was a lot better and HARD...i had to play it later as an adult to beat it.

The reason why no one likes it is because it took DMC1's Resi formula and absolutely butchered it.

Doesn't help that they had a nice and simplistic combat system in DMC1 that they could have expanded upon instead of abandoning. DMC3 got that much right.

The demon talisman thing was pretty cool but the story and environments are shit. Also the most important part of the game, the combat, is fucking garbage. You basically can't combo, you're locked into animations far too long and each one just ends with knocking the enemy back or other bullshit.

the layering of 1 always put me off (although it wasn't as egregious and overdesigned as 4's). the vest-like front of the coat is kinda weird, and it would probably be better without it it's true. but i love the clean smooth lines and simple shapes of it. in particular the way the tails of the coat only flare out at the waist. it makes the silhouette look really good in motion, compared to the others, where they flare out from the shoulders like a normal open coat.

the way it's rendered in stuff like the op image make it look like it almost has a velvet texture too, which im kinda into too tbqh

DmC may have been a downgrade and had a hostile attitude towards its fans, but it is nowhere near the trainwreck DMC2 was.

If you actually get off /v/ and stick your head out the window for once you'll notice that DMC2 is almost universely disliked, even when it was released. DmC was a casualization and not really what fans wanted but a far cry from being the terrible game /v/ made it out to be. It was still generally well liked.

any of you have actually played it through, or if you have it's been so long that you've managed to convince yourself it wasn't utter ramshackle, slapped together fucking garbage.

Level design killed the game for me. The environments are so bland and don't really feel connected to each other. They are also too open and don't give a good sense of claustrophobia that the series is known for. Add in helicopter and tank enemies and you've got some pretty crappy enemy designs. But then again no DMC enemy design has ever been able to top DMC.
