Why is this game so universally hated?
I totally agree its the worst in the series, but besides the story, difficulty, and the combat being a bit slower, it's not that bad.
There's a big emphasis on acrobatics thanks to the wallruns, dodge button, air hike being there from the start, and most offensive moves gaining you air, and it feels nice to have so many mobility options. It innovated stuff like the wallrunning and twosome time that went on to show up again in the DMC3 styles, except in 2 you actually get much cooler animations for firing your guns after a wallrun, that aren't present in 3 for some reason.
The sound design is fantastic, little things like the shell casings from ebony and ivory making noise when they hit the ground is great, and the soundtrack is solid.
It's better than DMC: DMC by a longshot and a pretty comfy PS2 hack and slash with a good amount of content. Why do people refer to it like an absolute abortion of a game?
Comparisons. It's another enjoyable action game on a console that overflows with them.
But it'll always stand in the shadow of its far more stylish predecessor.
And then DMC3 released and made it look even worse.
They tried to reinvent themselves and failed
I admire the effort though, too many products try to play it safe and produce the same thing over and over again, but it got everything wrong that DMC got right
>aside from writing and gameplay it's not that bad
DMC2 Dante looked plenty stylish, he just needed more personality.
Anytime DMC2 is brought up, I have to mention the music. It's pretty damn good.
https://youtu.be/UeWnVzhuKaE (Main riff brought back in nero's taunt.)
That and how great the DMC2 costume is.
It let me down big time because of how bad it was as a kid. However it grew on me a little as I kept playing. I never replayed it though and had an overall bad experience. dmc3 was a lot better and HARD...i had to play it later as an adult to beat it.
>It let me down big time because of how bad it was as a kid.
I can relate to that. I remember renting it once with a friend, and was going on and on about how fun the first game was, and how amazing Dante was. Then we popped it in and the change in quality was just immediately noticeable. It just wasn't fun at all, and dante had the personality of a signpost.
The reason why no one likes it is because it took DMC1's Resi formula and absolutely butchered it.
Doesn't help that they had a nice and simplistic combat system in DMC1 that they could have expanded upon instead of abandoning. DMC3 got that much right.
It completely got rid of the Resident Evil style, though. And the combat's definitely not simplistic anymore.
You know what would be funny? If there were a Resident Evil game and Dante was an unlockable character, and he's just completely invincible against everything. Because there's no way the average Resident Evil thing could pose a challenge to him.
Too many airborne enemies and bosses that required you to use your guns to defeat. So instead of fun and interesting fights, you get shit like the infested chopper and trismagia.
Dante Vs BoWs
Then again, I guess that was the original idea.
but was it really bad that it turned DMC into its own unique franchise?
DMC2 was maybe a rough transition period but it was still a significant step forward when you really think about it
its kind of eye opening when you consider that DMC 2 and 3 were directed by the same person yet people love one and hate the other
Kamiya gets very cross when people talk about that. Itsuno was brought into the DMC2 project very late into it, and at that point, all he could really do was try to minimize the damage as much as possible. The problems of DMC2 were not in any way his fault. Kamiya's been very adamant about that.
I just liked Lucia, she was easily the best thing about the game next to Dante's outfit. I wish she'd come back for the fifth game.
The demon talisman thing was pretty cool but the story and environments are shit. Also the most important part of the game, the combat, is fucking garbage. You basically can't combo, you're locked into animations far too long and each one just ends with knocking the enemy back or other bullshit.
Exactly this. I was a kid and remembered how fucking awesome Dmc 1 was and spent my money on 2 expecting more of the same
Man I was mad when it was just... Boring and frustrating and had terrible voices.
Lucia was cute and I liked her curvy swords and the whole brown but french thing she had going on
Unfortunately bringing her back would mean acknowledging dmc2 ever existed sooo
I really need to find the english scans for these.
They've acknowledged it in Dragon's Dogma at least, she's one of the names you can select in character creation for safe online viewing. Along with several other ones like Trish and Lady.
You can even make a decent look-alike in the game itself.
I never realized until like 2 years ago that all the enemies in DMC1 are pretty much "that monster from Resident Evil, but with a supernatual coat of paint"
That said, the enemies in DMC are actually really cool and the first thing that comes to my mind when people mention demons
>enemies in DMC1 are pretty much "that monster from Resident Evil
>but with a supernatual coat of paint"
>there are ninja theory employees still shilling their embarrassing failure on /v/ when even capcom have thrown them under the bus, when even Reuban, Dan, and Johnny publicly slammed them
Man you hacks are NT are salty as fuck.
You need to take the crumbs of feces out of your eyes because DmC is a joke of a DMC game and an insult as even a standalone action game.
Seriously get off Tamtam's dick already, it's irredeemable trash.
Too much black on the design for my liking.
1 is still my favorite. It's simple, a tad formal, and very stylish
the layering of 1 always put me off (although it wasn't as egregious and overdesigned as 4's). the vest-like front of the coat is kinda weird, and it would probably be better without it it's true. but i love the clean smooth lines and simple shapes of it. in particular the way the tails of the coat only flare out at the waist. it makes the silhouette look really good in motion, compared to the others, where they flare out from the shoulders like a normal open coat.
the way it's rendered in stuff like the op image make it look like it almost has a velvet texture too, which im kinda into too tbqh
>Why is this game so universally hated?
Dante barely has any lines in the 2nd game. There's also no real story at all. They just throw you in there and you fight shit.
lastly.... Crapcom took out the entire team that made Devils May Cry 1 and replaced em with new people just to save money. It did poorly so crapcom realized their mistake and brought back the team for Devils May Cry 3.
>DMC2 was just boring.
That's the single worst crime a DMC game can make and that's what makes it worse than DmC. I'd take any of DmC's shitty bosses over fucking infested helicopter or Argosax any day.
- All melee weapons have the same style.
- Enemies have too much health.
- Guns are too efficient.
- It's not campy enough.
- Bonus missions are all 'survive a bunch of dudes x 60'
- Environments are gloomy and samey.
- Some incredibly dull and unimaginative bosses.
- Lucia and the strangely reserved Dante didn't appeal to anyone.
Great soundtrack though.
NO, I KNEW THIS DAY WOULD COME.
FUCK OFF DMC2 APOLOGISTS.
FUCK OFF WITH YOUR "DmC was worse"
DmC WAS OFFENSIVE AND INSULTING TO FANS BUT ATLEAST IT WASN'T FUCKING BORING LIKE DMC2
DMC2 IS FUCKING BORING.
A DMC GAME BEING BORING IS LIKE THE MOST HEINOUS SIN.
>beat villain CEO guy in boss fight during Lucia playthrough
>cutscenes afterwards is just him going LOL ACTUALLY I WIN BECAUSE REASONS
>Lucia actually has her own cutscenes, missions and boss fights; a neat idea, ruined by the fact DMC2 just isn't a fun game
>they try this again in DMC4 but run out of time/funding, so half the game is just Dante backtracking through Nero's levels
Every time I go to play DMC4, I remember the backtracking like a Vietnam flashback and end up just playing 3 instead.
It absolutely blows my mind that they didn't try to atleast patch up this aspect a bit in DMC4:SE
I get a bunch of new cutscenes and a total rework is asking a lot, but fuck. Couldn't they have atleast introduced some new enemies for Dante? Play around with level routes and Boss attacks a bit more?
>must be over 18 to post here
Some low-quality and unimaginative bait right there, family.
0/10, distinctly unmotivated.
>Dante will never have boss fights against Gilgamesh, Lucifer and Pandora, just Nero's "please buster me now" faggots (minus FUCKING CREDO GODDAMN WHY DO BAD THINGS HAPPEN TO GOOD PEOPLE)
He's right though.
DmC may have been a downgrade and had a hostile attitude towards its fans, but it is nowhere near the trainwreck DMC2 was.
If you actually get off /v/ and stick your head out the window for once you'll notice that DMC2 is almost universely disliked, even when it was released. DmC was a casualization and not really what fans wanted but a far cry from being the terrible game /v/ made it out to be. It was still generally well liked.
You are the one that fell for the memes here Anon.
I never said DMC2 didn't add anything substancial. But it was still a fucking bad game.
DmC did add some good stuff too, like chaining pause combos between weapons, and the training mode. So stop cherrypicking.
>DMC4:SE gives Vergil DmC's grapple swords (to the detriment of his DMC3 teleport maneuverability) so he can do Nero platforming bullshit rather than just removing the platforming sections altogether
Why does everyone love his DMC2 look so much?
Stupid popped collar, v-shape shirt, buttcape, he looks tryhard as fuck.
DMC1 Dante is the best, he looks stylish but also like he's dressed for a job. Perfect sweetspot between flamboyant and proffesional.
>game includes wallrunning
>constantly puts you in wide open areas were the walls are half a mile away from were enemies will be
Honestly OP, the ONLY good things about this game are the soundtrack and some of the designs. Everything else is top tier garbage.
So wrong it hurts. I almost don't believe
any of you have actually played it through, or if you have it's been so long that you've managed to convince yourself it wasn't utter ramshackle, slapped together fucking garbage.
>>322716107 The despair's initial form was literally just the previous bosses appendages writhing in an indiscernible goop of polygonal diarrhea; so much so that this was one of two JPEGs I could even find of the monstrosity.
Beating it was literally just ages of holding down shoot and running in circles waiting for weak points to appear, in the same formula as every other boss, (because hint hint that's all it fucking is) no finesse or skill required, just mind numbing bullshit through and through.
Not to mention just being ugly, uninspired and all around shitty.
Racking my mind for things that stuck out about this game and all I can think of are those stupid ass zombie vehicles, and outfits sponsored by diesel.
Level design killed the game for me. The environments are so bland and don't really feel connected to each other. They are also too open and don't give a good sense of claustrophobia that the series is known for. Add in helicopter and tank enemies and you've got some pretty crappy enemy designs. But then again no DMC enemy design has ever been able to top DMC.
I think I saw a live action video on youtube about that. DMC + RE and Nero was evil for reasons to justify a fight between him and Dante. It wasn't bad, though they probably should have just made the Nero actor Vergil since that doesn't need any explaining.
