I love how Crisis Core and all of that other secondary bullshit completely ruined the point Of Zach and his impact on Cloud as a character.

Zach wasn't supposed to be a legend, he was just some random SOLDIER 3rd class faggot like the ones you fight early on in the Shinra building. Cloud was even worse, being like the guys you fight in the very first fight of the fucking game. Neither one of them were heroes. Zack was ko'd in one hit by Sephiroth because that's seriously how large the difference in skill was. The random fights you get in with him during the flashback further emphasis this.

Zach's death was a bitch too, unlike that gay fucking anime legacy shit they tried to retroactively ret-con in. He was weak as fuck and got gunned down like a dog after being so fucked up in the cryo tank, but even THEN he was stronger than Cloud, who was beyond fucking comatose, and lugged his ass all the way to Midgar before the guards caught up.

SOLDIERs have been injected with Jenova cells and exposed to mako energy. Sephiroth, however, was injected with more Jenova cells than normal and exposed to mako energy all while still in the womb.

God knows what other shit he was subjected to, too. It's completely possible that he was stuck in a tank like the ones in the Nibelheim reactor at some point in time.

Understand something about Teedus and Yuna: Yuna's Pilgrimage as it was would've been IMPOSSIBLE without Teedus. And Teedus's growth would've been impossible without Yuna's influence. Yuna, from the time she decided to be a summoner, was raised to commit suicide. She ate, breathed, and slept Yevon. When the crew were trying to think of another way to kill Sin without the Final Aeon, Yuna stood there looking out the window and lamented that she was useless since she knew nothing outside of Yevon. To Yuna her life doesn't belong to her, her life belongs Yevon and the people of Spira. The problem with this? Yevon is bullshit. Yevon doesn't care about her, it's only interested in maintaining the status quo. There's no real way of killing Sin. But since Yuna is all about Yevon she doesn't question anything they say.

In enters Teedus, some fuckoid from nowhere who has zero idea how the world around him works. Teedus questions EVERYTHING. And things people take for granted, such as the racial discrimination of the Al Bhed and the summoners marching to their deaths, are questioned by Teedus. So Teedus is Yuna's first (technically second because of Jecht) real window outside the walls of Yevon. She's fascinated by his stories only since they have time together he can influence her. Where she was willing to throw her life away before, now she has to question whether or not it's even worth it to die for a false hope. AND IT WORKED.

Not only that but the Al Bhed are also necessary for killing Sin. But everyone in the world hates the Al Bhed...except for Teedus. And Yuna has a blood relationship with their leader. So where Yevon and Machina never worked together before now they can.

Yuna and Teedus need each other. This is one of the few examples where love is the direct cause of victory in a way that makes sense...mostly

Play through it a second time, this time keeping in mind that Jenova is actually the antagonist for most of the game.
You do not actually see Sephiroth except for in flashback sequences and at the Northern Crater. The rest of the time, it's Jenova who has shapeshifted to look like him. (There's a reason why "Sephiroth's" text boxes don't have a name on them when he talks outside of flashbacks.)

Played through that part recently I think; she wasn't sure what she remembered at first, she was pretty hazy on the events herself for reasons that aren't too hard to understand.

However when you're about two towns over she starts to remember some parts of it from her perspective again, and starts to question Cloud very softly "Are you sure that's what happened? I mean, really?"

She's kind of confused which one was right at that point. Its slowly starting to come back to her that this shit can't be right.

Long time ago an alien killed an ancient race. Fast forward to today this corporation is using the Lifestream, basically a stream of souls, to make electricity and money. Also they found the alien in a cave, confused it for the ancient race, and started injecting themselves with its DNA to give themselves superpowers. One of them being Sephiroth. Sephiroth had a mental breakdown after discovering the circumstances of his birth (his mother intentionally injected him with alien DNA as a fetus), considered himself a monster, and decided the best fix was to complete his "mother's" mission to feed on the Planet's Lifestream. The MC Cloud was at Nibel during Sephiroth's freak out, was left mentally broken by the events, until the start of the game where he's convinced himself that he's a 1st Class SOLDIER mercenary.

Fast forward to the start of the game, Cloud has been hired by his childhood friend (who joined up with eco terrorists) to blow up Shinra's reactors. When one of the missions goes wrong he ends up meeting (and then rescuing) the last living member of the aforementioned ancient race. They do a bunch of adventures until they find out 2 critical facts:

1. That the alien is trying to pull itself back together and anyone carrying cells that came from her body is coming along for the ride
2. Sephiroth is trying to summon a huge ass meteor to force out almost all the planet's supply of Lifestream so he can feed on it and become a god

Aeris tries to stop him by summoning the Planet's defense system, Holy, but Sephiroth kills her and stops Holy from activating. Cloud tries to stop him but since he also carries Jenova's cells, Sephiroth has a degree of control over him. And so he uses Cloud to summon meteor. Cloud's mind is left shattered from the experience but Tifa helps piece it back together. From there Cloud and co raid Sephiroth's stronghold, kill Sephiroth and save the world. Fin.

Don't feel bad OP. I'm assuming you have played the game and you're still curious, because I didn't get everything the first time either. I didn't know the Sephiroth you see in the game was actually Jenova shapeshifted until I played the game a 3rd time. I was young as shit my first playthrough and didn't catch stuff like that.

Sephiroth goes crazy. Fucks both Cloud and Zack up physically, but not before 'killing' Sephiroth.

They're found unconscious by Hojo. Oh shit. Sephiroth is probably dead. Definitely rogue. We should use his cells to experiment on the people that killed him. Maybe they'll be even more powerful.

Proceed to stick Cloud and Zack into a mako tank where they get mako poisoned as fuck.

Zack is already a badass soldier and basically handles it, kills the guards during their 'feeding time' and breaks them out of the tanks.

Cloud is a scrub and can't handle that much mako poisoning. Basically catatonic and mentally retarded.

Zack is boss and gets Cloud to safety at the expense of his own life. Zack bequeaths his sword to Cloud on his deathbed after previously having dressed him up in a spare SOLDIER uniform of his.

Cloud comes out of his catatonic state at just about the time Zack dies. Seeing his friend die sends him into another mental break.

When he finally gets a hold of himself, he's dressed like a SOLDIER, has Zack's weapon, and has completely confused his past with Zacks.

His combination of Jenova cells, MASSIVE mako exposure (way more than a normal SOLIDER gets) and the CONFIDENCE that comes with the person he THINKS he is, is what is responsible for his abilities.

It's why when Cloud loses that confidence, he turns into a little shit.
