I am really confused; my rig used to be able to play many games on max settings, but now I get regular FPS drops on many of those same games even on lowest settings. My specs are in pic related. Does /v/ have any idea what might be the issue?
>>
As an example, playing Alien Isolation on even minimum settings gives me regular FPS drops down to 1 or 2 FPS, whereas just a few months back I'd have no problem running near to max settings and getting a stable 50-60fps.
>>

you might try asking /g/, dude
they'd know alot more about it than us I'd say
>>
Looks like your computer is probably overheating desu.
>>
>>322668854
Is the room your pc is in currently on fire?
>>
>>322668854
Overheating, causing throttling.

Clean out dust, make sure fans work, reapply thermal paste.
>>
>>322668854
you're ram might be corrupted, try downloading more

check drivers, maybe a previous version could improve performance on older games.

Subtle
>>322669421
The fans definitely work but I'll clean out all dust. I was under the impression that anything up to about 80 degrees is acceptable- is that wrong?
>>
>>322668854
Assuming those temps are correct, you're definitely overheating. Clean your shit you mongoloid. Dust buildup has a significant effect on your rig's ability to dissipate heat. The fact that games are dropping to 1-2fps occasionally but otherwise run fine further confirms that your rig is going into thermal throttling.
>>
1. Clean that bastard with compressed air now. Seriously, got to any office store or bigass retailer and get a can and clean that thing. Those temps are awful.
2. Your CPU is has pretty weak performance by today's standards. The 955 is often the minimum for games coming out nowadays. If you have an AM3 board you can grab a new CPU and be fine. If you're on AM2+ I feel bad for you son. It's just outdated.
3. Run CCleaner and make sure you don't have shitware running in the background
>>
>>322670026
Yes that's wrong. Idling should be sub-50 unless you don't have air conditioning or you have shit tier heat sinks, fans, and airflow. My rig idles at like 33°C both CPU and GPU, only hits 50/70 at load.
>>
>>322670038
Definitely clear of shitware, but dust may be the case.
Do you think I should look into getting a new CPU, then? I was under the impression that it was the GPU that was in need of an upgrade.
>>
>>322668854
Put on new thermal paste in your CPU and clean out all the dust.
>>
>>322670316
CPU's haven't advanced much in recent years so games aren't that much more CPU demanding. However, that CPU is stretching it now, more so than your GPU. I'd get a new CPU first. Probably cheaper too. Like another anon said though, if you have an AM2 socket motherboard you'll have to upgrade that too for a new CPU. Recommend FX-8300 if you want to stay with AMD.
>>
>>322668854
Your average temperature for your CPU should be 50-60°C.
>>
>>322670742
It's an AM3. I'll look into new CPUs, then. I'm not specifically set on AMD but it just seems that their products are cheaper than competitors for the same performance. Also
>>
>>322668854
Your computer is melting and you should invest in some RAM
>>
>>322670832
>50-60°
Nigga surely thou jest, unless your talkin about under load. If you're idling at 50-60 there's a problem.
>>
>>322671298
If it's AM3 then definitely stick with what you've got and just get a newer CPU. Check on socket compatibility though, can't remember if AMD went full retard and did some kind of AM3+ thing like they did with AM2/AM2+.
>>
>>322668854

Definitely some throttling going on, that's way too hot. Your computer is either too close to something pushing out a lot of heat, it's dirty as fuck and needs to be cleaned out, or a fan somewhere has failed.
>>
>>322671319
>you should invest in some RAM
Not necessary for gaming at all.
>>
>>322670832

Your motherboard is overheating, so that means it's more than likely an air flow problem caused by dust/bad fan or you've set your tower next to a space heater or some shit.
>>
>>322671520
74C under load as in OPs screenshot is waaaay too hot for that processor even on stock. Those idle around 40C iirc. 60s should be the top end under 100% load.
>>
>>322672141
New games asks for more than 8GB of RAM so yeah

It's your CPU.
You need an upgrade desperately.
How long have you had it?
>>
I have the same CPU as OP, and a GTX 770 2GB. Is i5 4690k or i7 4790k a good upgrade?
>>
>>322677609
the i7 upgrade would be a super upgrade for you, but the i5 is a pretty good upgrade as well.
>>
It's too hot. Way too hot. Are one of your fans broken? You could also invest in an after market heat sink for your CPU. they are like 10 bucks and will lower the temperature a shit ton.

Computers also just slow down as they get older. Drivers start conflicting, windows get bloated, hardware starts failing. Completely formatting and doing a fresh install may help.

So glad I didn't buy into the Liquid Cooling meme.

Holy shit, how fat are you?
>>
>>322681471
What?

You run prime95 and walk away from your computer. It puts your computer at peak for that time. You're supposed to do that after overclocking to make sure it's stable. How fucking new are you?
