598 is a really nice choice for someone looking into quality audio for the first time, you can get those for a good price, qualitywise they stand surprisingly well against headphones that cost multiple times as much and they aren't too demanding with amplification unlike many other headphones with similar SQ.

Nope, you can easily get the 598s for 70 bucks if you wait and price watch. They have better driver placement and don't have the earcuff design flaw the 558s do, plus the driver is about 6 years newer (though the same size).

I got me a pair of Superlux HD 681's for about $30, they sound pretty great. They have pretty neutral sound, so if audio positioning is important to you, that's good.

Yep I use mine everyday. You'll need to use a service like teamspeak to isolate your voice from background noise since it is a carotid mic. You'll also want a pop filter and a shock mount so bumping the table doesn't cause nasty noise pickup.

If you are podcasting they are fine since you're likely running it through some sort of audio software to isolate the noise.

Went from Qpad HQ90s for $80 to Shure SRH440s for the same price (i had to pick something in the same price range as i got the money form warranty on the first one), i don't think i'm going back to headsets, while it is a little flat (but not something Equalizer APO can't fix), it is still leagues ahead of anything i've heard in a headset.

before you go spending fifty dollars on a microphone, i bought one on amazon a couple of years ago for like fifteen bucks and it's great. it's like a telemarketer one that has a headband attached but i just put the headband around my neck and let the microphone sit on my chest bent upward, works fine. i use sennheiser headphone

Also, you do not need high fidelity microphones if all you're doing is speaking. You aren't playing an instrument that uses a large portion of the audible spectrum.
