That's essentially what happened in Lost World and look how people reacted to that.

Everyone, even the devs, bought into the "sonic is about speed" marketing and forgot that that was just a gimmick.

Though I won't defend Lost World as being some kind of perfect game, it's been a while since I played it but it feels at times like it just straight up abandons the whole momentum system. Not that most 3D Sonics do any good with it anyway (aside from, arguably, the Adventure games.)
