Actually on that subject the only problems I've ever had with those games is that it focuses so much on the spaceships you never see any actually living beings except Karan. We have no fucking idea what any of the other species even look like. The Vaygr are the principle antagonists in two and you never see a single one unless you count Makan.
>>322638115 This. I can confirm it for X3 at least. The game suffers from some balance issues (clearing sectors with flamethrowers) and building aesthetically pleasing complexes is time-consuming at best and frustrating at worst. Aside from that, Pretty cool game.

Starshatter: The Gathering Storm. You start out as a fighter pilot, work your way up to capital ship captain. Personally, I prefer the destroyers better than carriers because carrier gameplay is you setting up fighter patrols. Needs a different kind of mindset.
Oh, and your fighter can dive into a planet and do flight sim shit. It's also sort of hard sci-fi, if you're in to that.
Oh and the missions/plot react to how good you are.

>>322639378 The fighter controls like your standard flight sim minus the gravity or with if you're on a planet. The capital ships control like Nexus: The Jupiter Incident. Also something you and OP might like if you're into capital ships duking it out in space.
Starshatter is relatively old though but it is the best Adama simulator I've seen yet.

And that's why I prefer torpedo destroyers. It's practically Silent Hunter in space when you command that. Minus the rendering the insides of the sub/ship.

Basically, if you're a capital ship make sure you have fighter escort otherwise hostile ships that detect you will call in a bomber squad on your ass. Flaks work alright against fighters but bombers can kite you from afar and capital ships can't dodge that shit. Fighters can intercept both bombers and torpedo though.
I forgot to tell you that fuel is totally a thing and that's the main reason you'll loose fighters on extended missions. So if you're far from the carrier, you'll be vulnerable as a new escort arrives. I don't remember if the game easily allows the carrier to constantly refresh your escort without needing to micromanage it.
