Think the Pokemon Special manga, or at least summaries of it, helped a lot. Red was a lot more competent than Ash and some relatively edgy shit happens in that manga, at least compared to the anime, so I'm guessing it evolved into Red = edgemaster at some point.

its because fanartist needs that obligatory "badass" character. they couldn't do it with Ash because hes already established as the obligatory goody-two-shoes.
