But there was Rare that shitted out a masterpiece every year. Besides the obvious Mario 64 and Zeldas, the 'mediocre' games were still better than what Nintendo releases nowadays.

Mario Party 1&2 > Mario Party 10
Mario Tennis > Ultra Slam or whatever
Paper Mario > ???
F-Zero X > ???
Starfox 64 > Starfox U
Kirby 64 > Kirby U
Pokemon games > ???

Of course Sm4sh and MK8 are examples that not everything has gotten worse (although Smash 64 and MK64 are far from bad). But I think the n64 era was pretty good for Nintendo.
In my opinion Nintendo really suffers from the longer development time of games nowadays, which i'm really noticing in their games lately.
If Nintendo isn't going to expand or merge with another company soon (which is unlikely), it makes sense to cut of one of the divisions. And this is where I think NX will fit in. As a console/handheld hybrid, Nintendo could invest its time in only one system instead of the two right now, which should lead to more and better games.
DeNa takes on the mobile division and Nintendo the NX. Wii U and 3DS will disappear in 2 years.

Yoshi for the WiiU is much better than n64.
Rare shat the bed really hard with DKC64 while DKC Tropical Freeze was great.
Mario RPGs all moved to handhelds now and while Sticker Star was far from great the two other Mario RPG entries were good.
Funding stuff like W101 is also great.
You even got 2(,5) Mario games on it.

Ultimately I got much more enjoyment out of the WiiU than I got out of the N64 back then.

I agree with a hybrid option being good. It would also mean that all the third parties that support nintendo handhelds would automatically be on board with their home system because its all the same.
