I haven't played much of inquisition, but the combat feels very clumsy and dull.

To answer your question no you don't have to play through Dragon Age 2, you can get the general gist of what happened from Cullen and Varric. DAO is more important for the idiots guide to the world but besides that playing the previous games is not required.

The tie-ins with Hawke don't make playing DA2 worth it. Just read a plot synopsis. And DA:I might as well take place in an entirely diferent universe from DA:O for how much they've changed the atmosphere and lore.

I mean, yes, but I'm invested in my inquisitor's story. Like I said, it isn't that great, but I want to know how it ends.

I don't like many of the characters, but a few are alright.

The combat is clunky, but I didn't come for the combat anyway.

I honestly don't think you need to play previous games to understand and enjoy Inquisition, but it wouldn't hurt.
I would recommend playing through Origins and its DLC in their entirety, it's a solid game and I personally clocked around 200 hours in it.
DA2 is pretty terrible though, I'm trying to think of positive things to say about it right and I really can't.
Inquisition I don't think even comes close to Origins in terms of quality, but it's still a great game I enjoyed a lot.
